Wrestling and MMA Magazines/Publications

Guest DVD Spree

Hey guys.

I wonder if anyone can help - I need to find out about wrestling and mixed martial arts/shootfighting/UFC magazines from around the world, but particularly in the UK. I realy need to know what titles currently exist and what territories they are published in, but any info on old defunct titles would also be appreciated.

I know about titles like PWI, Powerslam, WOW, the official WWF mags and so on - what have I missed? And do dedicated MMA mags exist, or do they just get small and occasional coverage in martial arts mags (which is all I've been able to find)?

Your help on this is REALLY appreciated, guys.

Cheers

I'm sure that there is a dedicated MMA magazine out here in the UK. I saw it in WH Smiths a few weeks ago next to Power Slam. If I remember the name of it I'll edit this post. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Really? Arse. Are you sure it was about MMA? I know that the usual martial arts mags like Combat and MAI sit next to Power Slam, but they only provide very soft coverage of MMA.

If you do come up with the name, it would be REALLY helpful - I can't tell you how important this is...

WOW went out of business years ago. Bought out by PWI. So the "new" Aptermag was bought by the "old" Aptermag.

You missed Total Wrestling, the *new* new Apter mag that closed last year.

And yeah, Powerslam is still going. I'm desperate to find out more about this MMA mag, though...

Blackbelt, Fightsport, Full Contact Fighter.

Thanks Rudo, that's awesome.

Black Belt isn't MMA-specific - it's a general martial arts mag that covers MMA almost slipshod, IIRC. They launched both FightSport and Ultimate Athlete as dedicated MMA pubs, but neither sold well and both folded, with FightSport being reintegrated as a section of Black Belt.

Full COntact Fighter is a good one, thanks for giving me the heads-up on that. I'l have to check it out... I assume it's a US-distributed mag only.

Another one I've tracked down is Grappling (which is spiritually linked to FightSport and Black Belt via Stephen Quadros, actor/amchorman/musician/martial artist/journalist), but from what I've seen it's another broad martial arts mag that, while focused on grappling arts, isn't dedicated to covering the competitie side of MMA. I've also heard from numerous people that it's a joke of a mag.

There's Tatame, too, but that's a Brazilian mag in Portuguese.

Useful stuff, I really, really appreciate it.

A few weeks back, one certain drunk stumbled into the local 7-11-ish store...

"Excuse me, Miss...can you tell me where you keep the Apter Mags?"

"You know...Pro Wrestling Illustrated. The Wrestler. Wrestle America. Inside Wrestling. Pro Wrestling Illustrated Weekly. World of Wrestling. Wrestling BAD GUYS. The 1996 Pro Wrestling Alamanc."

Thanks, I hadn't forgotten Bill. His last mag over here, Total Wrestling, closed last year, and I don't think he's doing anything else this side of the pond.

The magazine was Fighters Only, you can check out the website at http://www.fightersonlymag.co.uk/, which is produced in conjunction with Ian "The Machine" Freeman.

There is another called MMA Universe which can be ordered from it's website at http://www.mlsports.co.uk/.

Hope that helps.

That's exceptionally helpful, thanks a lot, man.

Not sure what's going on with Fighters Only - the website hasn't been updated since May (which is still the current issue being promoted) and the parent website comes up as domain being for sale. Although, Companies House still lists it as being active...
