Dvd releases for 5/21

Allright, there is a lot of stuff that I'm interested in this week, maybe there'll be something that interests you.

The Rambo Trilogy:

Special Editions of all 3 films are now available, and feature commentaries, 5.1 etc. I only own First Blood from the original release, so I won't have to buy them all over again. The original DVD's were pretty average, so these should be worth it if you are a fan of the films.

It Came From Outer Space:

Classic sci-fi. Only for hardcore fans.

Legend:

Finally, after almost 2 years of delays, this baby gets it well deserved DVD release. The 2 disc set is pretty pumped, with two versions, including a director's cut with 20+ minutes of extra footage and a new score by Jerry Goldsmith. Pure gold for fans of the film, like me.

Memento:

The original disc of this great film was pretty bad, so an SE was only a matter of time. This movie already has a deep fan base, so I'm sure all of you will pick this up. I know I will.

Rapid Fire:

I'm a Brandon Lee mark, so this is for personal reasons only. Not a bad little film, and the disc is super cheap.

Silent Running:

Special Edition release of the brilliant sci-fi film is loaded with extras, plus the transfer is great, compared to the subpar original disc. If you like the older school sci-fi films, check this out.

Vanilla Sky:

One of my favourite films of last year. I picked up this disc last week, and the quality is great. It has some extras, including a commentary.

The Villian:

Woohoo, a western starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a character called "The Handsome Stranger". How can this movie NOT be worth getting?

'Till next week.

The Rambo Trilogy

An old guilty pleasure of mine since my youth.

It Came From Outer Space

What's the plot of this one again?  I keep getting it mixed up with "It!  The Terror From Beyond Space".

Legend

I can't STAND this movie, hated absolutely every part of it except for the cinematography, don't understand people who love it.  But that's okay, whatever floats yer boat.

Memento

Fuckin' A.  Does this disk have commentaries?

Rapid Fire

I remember this flick being "so bad it's good" with some decent action too.  Brandon hadn't quite learned how to act yet, he'd  have to wait until The Crow for that, R.I.P.

Silent Running

I've heard a lot about this one, and it sounds almost like a serious version of MST3K, what with a single human stuck on a space station with a bunch of robots.

Vanilla Sky

I loved this movie.  And commentaries rule!

The Villian

You've gotta be kidding me, I've never even heard of it.  When was it made?

One of those two was the Influence for Alien. I can't rememer which one it is but you could clearly see how much it influenced Alien.

It Came From Outer Space

From imdb.com:

John Putnam and Ellen watch a great fireball going down near a mine. Both are the only ones, who believe the "thing" not to be a meteor but an alien starship. In the following days, people disappear and return, obviously being manipulated in a strange way. After a while, the sheriff becomes distrustful. He and his men enter the mine. But Putnam hopes to reach a peaceful solution and enters the starship ...

It's a very good film, IMO.

And I remember the Villain being rather hilarious, atleast when I last watched it, though I was thirteen at the time, and alot of it was probably due to Kirk Douglas' performance in the lead role. It was made in 1979, here is a run down of the plot, again from imdb.com:

The cowboy Handsome Stranger will escort miss Charming Jones to get a large sum of money from her father, Parody Jones. But the rich Avery Jones wants to lay his hands on the money and hires and old cowboy, Cactus Jack, to rob them when they ride back from her father. However, Cactus Jack is not very good at robbing people.

I'll probably end up getting someone smarter than me to unlock the extra features on offer because i'm useless at those 'mindbender' type things. If its as taxing as the film its going to be very annoying! Its good to see that some real genre classics are being released, for some reason i was unconvinced older films would see much light of day on DVD but i've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of older & foreign films released on the format.

What the hell is Boondock Saints? I've heard of it but I don't know what it is.

As for It Came From Outer Space, I can't believe that's on DVD... that's so cool! Any special features? Is it a Midnite Movies? Those are always really good, maybe no special features but a great transfer and price, and in the end, that's all that matters.  All we need is a The Day the Earth Stood Still DVD, and most of the really good '50s paranoia/atomic age films will be on DVD.  Still a lot of cheesy giant monster in suit ones to be released though :)

As much as I liked Memento, I'm more than pleased with my "plain" edition, which is pretty darn good as is.  In a way I'm kinda annoyed, because if I'd have known there would've been a "special" edition I would've waited for that, then again, this was months ago way back when it first came out.  Right now, I don't have the money or "morals" to be able to "upgrade" DVDs, which is why I'll never buy one of the many Men in Black DVDs, knowing full well that it will come out in a Super Hyper Ultra-Rare Limited 16:9/Pan-Scan-Enhanced Bilingual Edicion Speciale!

I was one of the people that chewed that KevinSullivan dude out, because all he did was mention the mainstream, recent theatrical stuff and ignored the older, genre stuff. Then he would give Black Knight a B+ and say Novocaine wasn't worth mentioning.

I decided to cover the stuff I was interested in, older and any current stuff. He was welcome to continue his threads, but he stopped when I started.

As for Boondock Saints, I actually had it on my list of new releases for this week, but I was in a rush and forgot to include it. My bad. The film is great, as is the disc, compared to the lame no frills version released last year.

Yeah, I feel the same way about DVDs that I already own. What do most of you guys do with your "outdated" DVDs? Do you give them the eBay treatment, or do you hold on to them, or what?

If its a really good movie, and the extras on the special edition are so good i'll just give the old old one away and buy the newer one.  As for memento, if I had the original, i'd just keep it, it was an innovative movie but really it wasn't all that great.  But when reservoir dogs gets re-released or when scarface ges re-released I'll be the first motherfucker buying them.

Whenever I replace an older DVD for a newer version, I either sell it to the guy I buy my DVD's from, or put them on eBay, depending on the title.
