The OAO Raw Thread for 8/29/05

Recommended Posts

I think it's safe to say WWE is in a transition period. I think this whole past year has been one big transition period to be honest because there as so much building to Wrestlemania 20, we got it, and then everything kind of fell really flat. Wrestlemania 21 is one of the most forgetable Wrestlemanias already. Not because it was a bad show, but because it was already doomed because it followed Mania 20.

I think the move to USA and Smackdown to Friday Nights (even though I've totally given up on that show until Lesnar comes back) ends the transition and they kinda start over again. I would hope the days of Randy Orton getting pushed as a World Champion good guy are over, but pushing Carlito/Masters as main event bad guys...that's not exactly going to set the world on fire either.

I don't know why everyone is so shocked over the CCC/Masters pushes. They love Masters look and they think Carlito is a great talker. They aren't going away, in fact it's just the beginning. And both are more over than some young guys they've tried to push in the past.

As for the show, I liked it. The announcing was MUCH MUCH better than usual. As Hartfan said, they must have shot the show differently. Everything looked fresh and new even though they recycled a couple of angles.

My thoughts on tonights Raw

The Good

-Matt Hardy vs. Edge. This is everything the Summerslam Main Event should have been. Excellent chemestry and workrate. And, who cares if the finish has been done before. It worked here.

-The Big Show. I enjoy Big Show squashes. So sue me.

-Ashley. This chicks got quite a future.

Lawler: He actually didn't grate on my nerves tonight. In fact, I think he's starting to become a decent announcer. Actually, all three announcers were good tonight.

The Bad

-Big Show vs. Snitsky. I'm just not buying this feud.

-Chris Masters: Main eventer. In the words of the horse from Ren and Stimpy: No sir, I don't like it!

-The general fact that the tag champs are useless, as are the titles.

The who cares

-Tyson Tomko. I'm sorry, I just can't get into him.

That sounds about right.

I'm still confused as to why Snitsky and Big Show are feuding. We've seen Show squash him with relative ease and he's also been squashed by Hardy. Snitsky really hasn't been a threat since his feud with Kane.

As for Tomko, I can't get into him either. He just seems like another generic big man in a sport with even bigger generic big men. Even his crazy beard isn't unique, as Snitsky has one of those too.

Till the USA move it's just going to be throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks

I think they've been doing that for the past 4 or 5 years now.

I think Big Show's being misused right now. We all know what he can do because in the first half of 2003, he really stepped his game up on Smackdown and was a big part of that show. I think they could have him do that on RAW. They just need to be more consistent with him, which has been the problem with his character for the past 5 years. He's either a funny good guy, a monster bad guy, a serious good guy, a tweener, etc.

And Snitsky is useless. I know Vince might love the guy but he has absoutely no business being on TV. He's horrible in the ring. He's horrible on the mic. He's got a horrible body to look at with all that embarassing steroid body acne. He's got no redeeming qualities. He should be on HEAT until they cancel that show and then just fire him.

Like, I'm understanding they want to make new stars. That's fine and dandy, but like someone said, they've just got all these guys who are totally green and aren't ready to to be TV...basically throwing shit to the wall and seeing what sticks.

Another thing of note is obviously how lousy the tag division is. It could be at the worst point it's ever been. It's in desperate need of a boost. I think Cade/Murdoch will be a quick fix for a while, but other than that...there's no hope. The Heart Throbs are a joke. Tyson Tomko and Renee Dupree doesn't even make any sense. I don't mind Hurricane/Rosey as tag team champions. It's just that they don't do anything with them. The one thing they had somewhat going was Stacy as their manager and then they pulled the plug on that one.

They've got all this established talent that's doing abosutely nothing right now including Kane, Eugene, Rob Van Dam, Shelton Benjamin, Tajiri, and Triple H (even though he was extremely stale so that's understandable why he's been off TV)...they need to take the crap out and put some of these guys in places to help improve the show. I could see all guys getting makeovers as well, and that's fine. Give them something fresh to do, but don't just not use them.

Yeah. There have been so many underutilized wrestlers released over the past several years from WWE/wrestlers and divas quitting because of their frustrations with WWE, and yet WWE always seems to find something to do for hosses or greenhorns who aren't ready to be pushed.

With what audience is Carlito and Masters over with??

When Carlito came out for the Main Event I didn't see any heat from the crowd what-so-ever. Pretty much the same with Masters. Hell at least Orton got SOME heat during his big push.

I just don't think RAW has enough talented guys right now other than veterans like Michales, Flair, Angle to keep up much interest going into the switchover to USA Network. I hope Vince has a few tricks up his sleeve because I don't think the future looks to bright on the RAW side even with Triple H coming back.

They need to rename Tyson Tomko "Headkicker" give him Dr. Demento's "Boot to the Head" (I think that's the name of it.  I could be wrong) for his theme and rename his finisher the BIG FUCKING KICK TO THE HEAD.

FYI: The song is "Boot to the Head" but it's by a comedy troupe called The Frantics.

It can be found on the album of the same name.

I didn't see Raw so this is the most useful thing I can contribute. :)

I'm betting the new Evolution is beginning to take shape with Masters and Carlito joining Flair and HHH. Definitely not the greatest RAW, just a bunch of rehash. How many times can Carlito be in a handicap match. Does Big Show really need squash matches? Since I'll be at RAW next week I'm glad they did the tag match tonight and not next week

Carlito & Masters in Evolution would be like Vincent/Virgil & Disco Inferno joining the NWO.

I can kinda see Masters..but Carlito...HA!

If they start Evolution again, they need to have two/three brand new faces. Like, for example, when Team Angle started. No one heard of Charlie Haas or Shelton Benjamin, but using Angle's overness, they got over by association. I hear Triple H is all about CM Punk, so I don't see why not bring him in the fold. Take someone from OVW like a Brent Albright so put him in the mix. If Flair ends up back with HHH, then yaay for everyone.

Raw Thoughts:

- Michaels/Masters: Bait, meet switch. Not that I had marked my calendar or anything, but if you're going to promise something, you should deliver.

- I've said this before, but the lack of logic considering the rules of a wrestling match is killing me. Two instances this week:

1) Big Show's jobber opponents don't have to tag in their handicap match, but Carlito and Masters do against Michaels. The sad thing is that JR actually mentioned this during the main event, but never said WHY it was this way.

2) Arm dropping on submissions. The Masterlock only gets one arm drop, but other submissions (even if performed by Masters!) use three arm drops.

- Good Edge/Matt match tonight. This is the match they should have had at Summerslam. Althought the finish was a bit cliched (Foley/Funk in the dumpster anyone?), it made sense. Also, it helped fulfill Hardy's prediction that he was going to send Edge to hell.

- I was praying for Victoria to attack the other two bimbos after disposing of the new one, but you take what you can get at this point.

- Why are they pretending like Angle and Cena have never fought each other? Hell, Cena made his debut against Angle.

- Rosey and Hurricane are total jobbers. Why even bother keeping the tag straps on them at this point? They were both totally killed by Tomko who, by the way, still sucks. When you're ripping off Test's finishers, you need help.

- I figured the main event would be perfect to have Shelton or Cena be Michaels' partner, but apparently WWE thought otherwise.

- Why even have Flair return (again, a la the Foley/Funk dumpster angle) only to job within seconds. And why didn't Flair of all people think of kicking Masters in the balls? A better finish would have been Masters using a chair to get DQed and then put the Masterlock on an unconscious Michaels to close the show.

- Speaking of unconscious, what's with all the sudden hospitalization and knocking out angles? There's Hardy at Summerslam, Hardy and Edge tonight, Flair tonight, Rosey and Hurricane tonight, and Big Show tonight. All of these were pushed as the guy being completely out of it rather than just being simply hurt.

My final RAW thoughts:

Shawn Michaels...just like he did in the mid 90's ...is carrying RAW on his sholders again. He has worked his way up to being "the guy" for WWE again. Some might say Cena.. but he can't carry the show the way Shawn does believe it or not.

It's 1994-96 all over again.

Well, I'm sitting here, and I'm thinking "Well, ok. This is 10 minute of stupid, and well, then 11 minute of commercial. Well, wait. Am I wasting my life? Well, yes! So, Maria, we've decided wrestling is stupid."

Would you mind terribly if I stuck my penis in your ear for a moment?

What I mean by "throwing shit at the wall" is that it's blatant that none of these guys is going anywhere long term...they are just sticking them in there for the hell of it until getting on USA, then they'll begin a new major angle.

I mean really, at the next PPV Chris Masters is going to job to Michaels and that's it for him. Carlito will job the IC and then do nothing for the next 6 months.

Sure there are a lot of guys being misused or not used at all...that's the point. They don't give a shit about these lame duck Spike TV shows, so they are going to reintroduce guys like HHH and RVD once they get back on USA.

Plus, Snitsky, while not the best worker, at least has a personality. Tomko's just your typical big guy with no personality to me right now.

Raw is a formless show right now, it really is. It seems like no one has any real defined position on the card. It's sorta like ECW in its last year where you'd see guys like Corino and CW Anderson tossed into #1 contender matches despite neither guy being remotely credible.

Raw right now is giving me this eerie WCW 2000 vibe....it seems like nothing but worked shoot angles and the New Blood (Carlito/Masters) vs. the Millionaires Club (Flair/Michaels). The irony is that Smackdown is now resembling ECW 2000 with the heel network exec and all.

"Boot to the head" was also on Dr. Demento's twentieth anniversary tape, so I can see how that mistake happened.

Also, it's terrible, but the quote Ravenbomb made to Maria reminded me of a story from the Marilyn Manson book. There was this big-jugged deaf bitch. They brought her along with them to, you know, groupie type shit. Anyway, Twiggy dug her because he wanted to talk dirty and wouldn't have to worry about offending her because she was deaf. Anyway, long story short, the chapter ending with the phrase "I want to cum in your worthless ear canal."

Meh, I really dug Raw tonight for the most part. Although I didn't like the ending (Flair's return was pointless), I was really into the tag main event. I'm actually liking the way they've handled Carlito and Masters the past couple of weeks. You can argue that they're green, not ready or whatever, but the show seems a lot more fresh with them in a more prominent role, and I enjoyed watching them interact with Michaels tonight.

I liked Hardy and Edge, and agree with whomever it was that said this should've been what went down at Summerslam. Only thing that's kinda bugged me tonight as far is these two go is the stuff with Lita and the fact that they've just made her completely evil. I can understand why they'd go that route, since they don't want to take sympathy away from Matt, but still considering this program's supposed to be based on real life history, it'd help if she wasn't just COMPLETELY heartless towards Matt. I think having her show even a little compassion for him would've added a lot to the double KO spot at the end.

The Angle/Cena stuff was ok, although they probably could've been given a bit more of a prominent role, and the rest of the show was harmless. Overall, this show had a really fresh feel to it, and for the first time in a while I was into it all the way through.

Watching Matt/Edge as we speak...

If you're going to draw in viewers for the "soap opera" effect, saving the *real* street fight for tonight was a great idea, whether it was on purpose or not. There's still money to be made off of this feud, as this feud should be done in the vein of the HHH/Steph/Angle triangle back in 2000 that drew alot of casual fans in to see what would happen. Draw it out for a few months to see how fans react to it, then blow it off with the fans deciding what should happen in the end (without someone vetoing the intended finish of the storyline). They're already continuing the feud at house shows, with most matches ending in a no contest, so they've got the right idea with that.

I'm until the moonsault spot, and this is just refreshing to see a feud reach an apex on RAW instead of pay-per-view. The crowd is feeling it, and I can bet that their quarters will do significantly better than anything else on the show.

So in the vein of a slower burn in the Hardy-Edge feud and letting the fans reaction decide what will happen, should they keep them away from each other for the next 4-6 weeks, have Edge use his MITB title shot and have it look like he can legitamately (sp.?) beat Cena and have Hardy cost him the match. That way it adds a little more intensity to the feud.

Of course if you don't have them wrestling at Unforgiven, that makes an already weak card even weaker.
