Here's my Zappa collection.

agreed. there's many artists i don't "get" that i sure as hell respect. along with zappa, tom waits is another. although i did really enjoy his alcoholic homeless lounge singer act in the 70's.

You should pick up Mothers Of Prevention. Porn Wars is cool (but with little replay value), and Alien Orifice, Yo Cats, What's New In Baltimore?, and Aerobics in Bondage are awesome songs. I was also impressed with Burnt Weeny Sandwich, for Holiday In Berlin and The Little House I Used To Live In.

I highly envy you for having The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life. I'm holding out that one of my friends will buy it for my birthday.

Burned copies, obviously. I'll give you a Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life for a Chunga's Revenge and a Make a Jazz Noise Here (unless that's a double. I'm going for a 1:1 ratio here)

Oh shit, Slayer has all the YCDTOSAs. And I know we've had this conversation before with preferences to his "eras," but how can you sleep without owning Weasels... or Waka/Jawaka?

Hey, and that Jean-Luc Ponty album is top-notch, too. Don't sell it short. A much faster-paced and economical "King Kong" than the one on YCDTOSA 3 I'm not sure I've got any others, actually, aside from the one on the Baby Snakes DVD.

There's also instrumental versions of "Idiot Bastard Son" and "America Drinks and Goes Home," with the electric violin and viola covering the majority of the melody. The "Music for Low Budget Orchestra" piece has some good high points and lots of really mish-mashed weird melodies and tempo changes.

How about:

Absolutely Free

FZMtMOP

Chunga's Revenge

Jazz Noise (2)

for

Bongo Fury

Best Band (2)

Just Another Band From L.A.

I wonder how close that is to the Revised . . . version on Studio Tan.

I have Absolutely Free but neglected to list it.

How does Uncle Meat rank to you? I think you're somewhere right in between Slayer's preferences and mine. That'd be fine to throw in instead.

Either that or Burnt Weenie Sandwich.

My next one will probably be Cruisin with Ruben and the Jets.

JABfLA isn't really that good. "Billy the Mountain" is awesome but way long. The replay suffers and it's not that hilarious unless you've got a working knowlege of Los Angeles and other parts of southern CA. The rest of the cd (which combined is as long as Billy the Mountain) has a couple high spots in "Magdalena" and "Dog Breath." The instrumental "...Variations" on volume 2 are cool as hell, but this has vocals, is also live, and is a lot less polished.

Ah, Uncle Meat. It took me a second listen to really come around on it, but when I did, I really did. It's far and away the most musically rich release from the Jimmy Carl Black lineups. Weeny and Weasels are great too, but all the recurring themes, and King Kong, and all that stuff, it's just great stuff. You can definitely hear the Stravinsky, the Varese, the childhood doo-wop all shining through. Can't go wrong with a lineup that includes both Underwoods, either.

The CD release has a second disc, which has about 40 minutes of random conversations that make Lumpy Gravy seem linear, and a song called "I've Got A Big Bunch Of Dick" in Italian, and it's from the 80s and is there for no good reason. Cut that shit out and just go with the original stuff and it's great.

On Ruben: last fall, I kept seeing it at Borders for $8, and always passed on it in favor of stuff that wasn't rehashed from Freak Out, with Chad Wackerman overdubs for no good reason. I'm still kind of reluctant to get it, because half the band on CD is from 20 years later. I haven't listened to samples, but something isn't gonna be right if you have Ray Collins singing with Chad Wackerman's wanky electronic drum fills. Zappa was no fool in the studio (Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk is seamlessly edited from like 20 shows), but I'm suspicious anyway.

Oh shit, Slayer has all the YCDTOSAs.

I have for awhile now.

Like I've said before, I think #2 disc 1, #4 disc 2 and #5 disc 2 are the best discs out of the 12

And I know we've had this conversation before with preferences to his "eras," but how can you sleep without owning Weasels... or Waka/Jawaka?

I'm (very) gradually warming up to the older stuff era... hell before three months ago, with the exception of Roxy, I didn't own anything older than Shiek Yerbouti

I just got Zappa in New York. The first disc has "Titties and Beer" and other funny ones like "Punky's Whips" and "The Illinois Enema Bandit."

The second disc has a version of "I'm The Slime" with fucking Don Pardo doing an entire verse. Also "The Black Page" (1 and 2), "Sofa," and "The Torture Never Stops" as well as a long medley with "Approximate"

Great disc.

Nah, not that much. I picked it up at the friendly local independent music store for $18.99 or some such. It's worth 25, though. It's the Sheik Yerbouti lineup sans Belew, I think.

"THAT'S RIGHT FRANK! I AM SLIME!"

That whole album is nothing short of fucking awesome. Do you have the whole thing or just that track? One of the "So I don't have a Zappa cd but might get one so which one should I get?" albums.
