Dirty tapes

Just a thought here. Whever you can't see the picture on your TV when playing a video, it's becuse the heads are dirty and need to be cleaned. Is there anything to do when a tape is dirty? I tried playing an old Coliseum tape on my VCR and got nowhere because it's an old tape and probably filthy.
