Should jr and the king be put to rest?

Recommended Posts

Guest justcoz

The WWE should really start a new era with their presentation.  Confidential is a very good start.  Hell, I say give it another hour for From The Vault matches in addition to the insight pieces and you'll have a winner.

Tonight while watching Raw I realized that in addition to pushing new stars WWE should consider a new look to their product as a whole.  When Monday Night Football ratings go down what does ABC do?  They change the packaging complete with changing commentators.

Jim Ross is an important part of WWE but his best days as wrestling's top play by play man are behind him.  His commentating shtick has grown old from being overexposed and him just seeing so much.  Do you not think this doesn't contribute to people changing the station?  Jim Ross would have plenty to do with the behind the scenes element of WWE and the production of Raw and Smackown.  Give him a rest.

Despite an almost one year layoff, Jerry Lawler was immediately thrown onto Raw and Smackdown upon his return overexposing him after a much needed break.  He didn't deliver anything new to his act either beyond the puppies which died around the same time as "Suck It".

Much like Jim Ross, The King again needs a rest.  He could still be a personality with a King's Court segment each week.  Get him off color though.

So remove JR and The King from Raw each week.  Instead they are our PPV only announce team.  Raw goes too???

First, try to come to a deal with Joey Styles.  An offer he can't refuse to be the voice of the WWE into the next decade.  If this doesn't work...

PUSH KEVIN KELLY to the spot.  You probably already know I'm ditching Michael Cole.  He's gone from Smackdown.  Maybe we'll keep him on Velocity or as an interviewer.  We've been tortured by this experiment enough.  Let's move on.

Kelly is a fan of this business and I'd like to see him get a crack at this gig.  He's pleasant to listen to and may just show his stuff if given the ball.  I'm sure JR would be talking into a headset to him for the first few months but that's okay.

If not Kelly, what the hell bring back Tony Schiavone!  Wait... Don't go!!!  I'm still holding out for the Monday night where Flair and Shane McMahon shock the world by introducing Eric Bischoff w/ Ernest Miller and declaring the return of WCW and Monday Nitro.

On color????  The Quintesential Stud Muffin Joel Gertner.  Gertner fits the demographic better than the King and so would his style of humor and color commentating.  Of course, I'd love see Styles pair up with Paul Heyman but he needs to given the book completely- not doing color.  Styles and Gertner would take Monday night into it's next stage of progression.

Or let's consider...  Kevin Nash- could be funny...

Now for Smackdown...  Goodbye Cole and Tazz!!!!  Hello Mr. McMahon and Jesse The Body Ventura????  Everyone is cringing probably now but the Mr. McMahon character has run it's course.  I say Hollywood Hogan has his last hurrah with a victory over McMahon at Summerslam and on Smackdown Vince and Linda join Hogan for his retirment speech which also sees Jesse in attendence.  Vince turns over a new leaf and we can say goodbye to Mr. McMahon.

Until Tazz chockes out Cole on commentary forcing McMahon to enter the scene firing Tazz from Smackdown and having to sit in Cole's seat.  After doing one match alone Vince is joined by Jesse and we have (with Gorilla Monsoon's passing) the last WWF commentary reunion possible (of course, if Heenan could physically handle joining Mean Gene on Confidential, that would be priceless as well).

The press going in UPN's new season would eat up having Govenor Ventura returning to the WWE on Smacdown.  He's not running for anything else in the political scene, right?  Smackdown press releases would be hyping McMahon and Ventura teaming up again for the first time since NBC's Saturday Night's Main Event.

Joey and Joel are 100X worse than JR and the King ever will be. And you want to replace other guys with Eric and Vince? They might be the two worst commentators in wrestling history not named Mongo McMichael.

While I agree with the idea of ditching JR and King, I honestly think your plans are flawed.

Joey Styles - Good, even great. But I think bringing back Scott Hudson is a much more realistic option. Mike Tenay is a good choice also, and he'd probably be more willing to deal than Styles. He's knowledgable about the business, the voice tolerable, and it seems like he'd actually call the match.

Joel Gertner - Yeah, but he's just as irritating as Lawler sometimes. The only fan he'd benefit would be a past ECW-ite. And whats the point if he's probably not gonna be given free reign? The only thing that set him apart were his poems, and get rid of those, you have another Lawler. First, you try and deal with Don Callis. In all likelyhood, there's no way that'd work. Your next option, bring DDP to the table. DDP may be facing retirement, and what better way to keep him on tv and earn his pay. He's been in the booth a few times before with moderate success. Simply get him over to Raw, and there you have it.

On the Smackdown side.

Kevin Kelly - Have him replace Michael Cole.

DDP - Yes, I know I nominated him for the Raw brand, but it'd be just as viable an option, if not more so, to keep him in the Smackdown booth. In the event that doesn't cut it, just keep Tazz around until another option is found. I can tolerate Tazz, and by the reactions he sometimes gets, so can other fans.

So long as it's not Coachman or Lloyd doing PBP, I'm happy.

Oh and Regal should replace Lawler, preferably after punking him out and perhaps even piledriving him through the table.

Just a thought...

While this is far from a defense of JR and Lawler, they did seem to be trying during the ladder match last night. Hell, Lawler was pointing out the psychology a couple of times. That occurs once in a blue moon.

I gotta say Mark Loyd is growing on me, especially his backstage stuff. He seems like he might even have the right stuff to be a manager.

I agree with whoever said Tenay! I was watching AAA When Worlds Collide the other day and his commentary rocked. He is smooth, has a good voice, and knows his stuff. And doesn't he sound like the guy who does the voice of Ohta on Iron Chef? (Heck, you could just get Fukui-san and Ohta to take over...)

Raven was doing great; it's a shame he's out of the booth. Al Snow is alright so far on the greatest WWE show of all, Velocity. And listening to KK's commentary during the 'Kennel from Hell' match on the Foley DVD made me a believer.

Just keep Chris Leary and Mark Madden far away and we'll be all set (did anyone watch the last WWA PPV? Madden has fallen so far...).

The WWE would do well by taking Don West away from the NWA. They could have him shill all their merchandise, screming about "gem mint ten rookie cards" and such.

Have I mentioned that I'm a Don West mark from his Shop at Home days? I don't know how well he'll do as a wrestling commentator, but I look forward to seeing him again.

I'm not really a fan of Kevin Kelly too much.  Here in Canada we get enough of him during the commercial breaks for Raw and Smackdown.  I think Loyd shows potential too, but JR and the King need to stay put.  Just tone down on all the boobs and animal references.  Smackdown needs something done about it.  I would rather see Vince calling the action than Michael Cole because he is such a little shilling whore that he makes me sick to watch him.

I will never forgive the WWE if they bring back Tony Shiovanne. I swear, I was ready to break my TV everytime he yelled, "Hold the phone!"

I agree with you on every point justcoz, they need to do something before everything becomes stale...

Well it is already is, so something has to be done.

I will give JR the benefit of the doubt and say the terrible product is what is making his commentary seem lackluster.  It is hard to fake enthusiasm.  Lawler I couldn't care less about it is just too little too late for him.  If he called the greatest match of his life next week I wouldn't care because I would still expect him to say puppies in the next segment so I probably wouldn't pay much attention to him anyway.

And I have spent many a night staying up til 4 in the morning watching Don West.  My friend and I at school put pictures of him up on our doors proclaiming him to be Jebus.  I can picture him being the color commentator.  For an Austin match he could be like "CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS GEM MINT STUNNER THIS IS THE GREATESR FINISHER EVER."  Then the next match he would be like "That last finisher was crap THIS IS THE GREATEST FINISHER EVER."  I loved those types of segments.

A while back, Joey Styles said that he is not interested in getting back into the wrestling business.

Well he changed his mind because he is now the commentator for Major League Wrestling (news broke earlier this week)

<<Joey and Joel are 100X worse than JR and the King ever will be.>>

Ummm, well if you hate Joey Styles or are biased against him, than please state why, but just don't make yourself foolish and claim that Lawler is better than Styles.

JR doesn't bother me that much, but GET RID OF THE KING NOW! God... I detest him so much, his immature ramblings about breasts, his annoying high pitched voice, and the fact that nothing he says is EVER funny... yech! Give me Tony Schiavone any day!

As for Kevin Kelly, he seems all right, but terribly bland.  I remember watching him on Metal with The Coach.  Not terrible, but nothing new or interesting.  On the scale of 1 to 10 I'd say 4 or 5, but that's still better than The King.

I didn't think the problem with Styles is that he wasn't interested I thought it was a deal where he had to work full time and he didn't want that.  So if a deal came along with a lighter work load he would consider it.

Bring back Shiavone!

just kidding...

I think there is a need for change of the old guard..

I think Joey and Joel would be much better than King and Jr...

Or maybe a combination of Madden and somebody else.. I like Madden, he's funny.

Ventura and Gorilla were definitely the best.  Heenan and Gorilla are my faves, but Ventura threw in some actual wrestling knowledge and made each move mean something, even if it meant nothing.  WM V is watchable JUST for the commentary.

Anywho, I really liked the Coach/Raven team as it was a departure from the Colour/PBP format the Wwf has gone with forever.  Coach would call the match while Raven would do analysis and throw in some points as well.  I think Coach actually likes wrestling, unlike Cole, who is a bitch.  Kelly is good too, but is too watered down for a big time announce spot.  With this said, Coach is a black Kevin Kelly...

I have always been a big fan of Hudson and was saddened to see him leave the Wwf (which was more the Wwf's fault than his...assholes).  Tenay has always been a god in my book and was solidified as such after I saw Halloween Havoc 97 and he just r'presented all the knowledge you and I love.

Speaking of Havoc...4 announcers is just too fucked up...who the hell thought of that?

Hudson brings the PBP, Tenay brings the knowledge, and for colour I would put Cyrus...the second coming of Jesse Ventura.

Nobody has commented about bringing back Jesse?  He's not running for any other political office supposedly.  He did the XFL.  I think it would an publicity grabber to grab him for Smackdown.

My announce teams would look like this:

Styles/Gertner:  RAW

Joey only has to work on Monday nights...

Coach/Jesse:  Smackdown

for some reason I could see these two developing a chemistry... and yes, I scrapped the return of Vince to play by play although I think it would be nice for him to spend his senior years as the voice of the WWE after being the voice of the WWF for so many years...

Kelly/Mike Sanders:  Velocity

only smarks stay home on Saturday nights and I think this is the team to appeal to them and call all the cruiserweight action we should be getting on Saturday nights...

Okerlund w/ Heenan if he's healthy enough:  Confidential

Cole/Kevin Nash:  Heat

i think the future of Kevin Nash is that of the next great WWE color guy!!!  i think Kevin could be funny, would throw enough inside jabs to keep us smarks listening and know how to hype what we are watching... Cole is there because he has to be, I'd personally let him move on career wise because I don't think he's really into this, he'd rather be on CNN, VH1, E! or anywhere else I think.

JR/King:  PPV's

I like JR and the King, yes I am criticizing them right now but that's because it's time for the product to grow and develop, reinvent itself because that's what Monday night competition forced both wcw and the wwf to do.  WWE's product is stagnant and JR and the King are just stale anymore.  it's been too long for them.  They are like the tired main eventers.  Give some other voices a chance to carry the next group of guys to stardom each week but once a month the two get back together and maybe after 3 to 4 weeks of them just viewing WWE tv like a fan and us listening to other voices call the action- maybe it would be fresh again? We'd mark out for slobberknocker and puppies just like we used to.

I'd like for them to bring in Scott Hudson but I don't see it happening.  The same for Mike Tenay but I think he'll be the voice of the NWA.  Cyrus has too much heat supposedly from his days of the Jackyl.

Then again... Joey and Jesse would be interesting and I'm sure Heyman would like to have Joey for his show.  Scott Hudson would be a nice addition to Raw given his history with WCW, it would be fitting for Flair to have him.  Maybe try Kevin Nash in the color role with Hudson?

I like joey styles but I like hudson more, hudson was a good newcomer in gwf, then in wcw he was good, but whoever else was with him held him down.  I like the ddp idea for color, he is an interesting personality.  I dunno, I am partial to heyman but fuck it, any change would be good for right now.
