TV/Computer Audio Tinkering

Recommended Posts

So, I got this brand spanking new 28" Widescreen HDTV, and my (admittedly a bit old) video card had an S-Video output. My old TV didn't have an S-Video input (only one coaxial!) so I got pretty excited, and set up dual monitors on my computer monitor as well as my TV. I'm loving it right now that any video I pop up on fullscreen on my computer actually shows up on my TV... except for one minor little thing, that being the sound. This is really one of those extremely minor, perfectionist type of things that bothers me, but I'm trying to figure out a way, any way, that I might be able to somehow output my soundcard's audio to my TV so that when I play movies (or even music) on my computer, and I have my TV set to the S-Video mode, I can hear whatever's playing on my computer through my monitor.

Now, the outputs on my sound card have, what I guess it's called, a jack sharing system, it's color coded pink, green, and blue. From a little bit of research I did, I found that it is possible to have a line going into the computer for computer speakers as well as have another one going out to other speakers. The component inputs on the back of my TV under the S-Video input also has audio inputs, so I figured if I could find a cable that would the audio plugs on one end, and have a line in plug on the other, then that would make it work.

So I guess the question is, would it work? And where would I go about finding such a cable at a relatively low price? So far, this is the closest thing I could come up with:

But I'm kind of unsure if the plug going into the computer's audio jack would be too big or not, and also if there would be a cheaper alternative to that as well.

If you plug the mini-RCA part of the cable into the mini-RCA plug on your computer and the other half in the red/white components in the back of your TV, it should work. However, what I'd do is just get a good set of speakers and hook your computer up to them. The speakers on a TV aren't that great anyway, and depending on what kind of sound card you have, you could get 5.1 or 7.1 surround on it, which is vastly superior to simply tv speakers.

The speakers on my TV are Dolby Digital surround sound, plus I have a sub and two additional speakers plugged into it, so yeah I would <3 output through my speakers. Then there's also the whole thing of sound coming from the same source as the video, which for some reason really bugs me.
