How About an Eddie Memorial Show

Recommended Posts

Would this be in bad taste if they went this route? Is it cashing in on his death? Since Eddie loved the business so much, I just think it would be fitting to hold a yearly event in his honor. Maybe let Paul Heyman (if they re-sign him) or Eric Bischoff book it. Have WWE guys, invite guys from Mexico, Japan, ROH (non TNA affiliated guys I guess), etc. Maybe even do some sort of tournament. Heavy on cruisers and luchas. I think it would be a nice pay-per-view or do you just let Eddie fade into memory along with Owen, Pillman, etc. ? I guess you can't have a PPV for every guy who passes away prematurely, I just think it's more fitting for Eddie given the Guerrero family legacy, maybe even hold it in Texas.

How are they gonna properly book One Night Stand II when they can't even acquire the proper talent for it? (considering all the decent talent has signed for TNA)

They'll probably go the easy route with a Dreamer/Sandman main event.

This came from a discussion at my office about dead wrestlers, we brought up the David Von Erich Memorial Card and how much we all marked out for that every year as kids. Then we ran around putting Von Erich claws on each other while the people who didn't get it just thought we looked like idiots. But we did look like idiots.

I just dont see another ECW PPV working. Especially if Heyman leaves. But Joey Styles won't be special because he's on Raw each week, the Dudleys are gone, etc. I think they should just consider running a television show from the Hammerstein Ballroom. Maybe even put SNME there to make the show feel different from Raw and Smackdown, stay in SNL's "Live From New York" tradition and give them NY exposure since they aren't running the Garden.

There's another rumor to start.

I believe they are already doing one in Mexico- Konnan is booking it.

Yes, I read that. I think Meltzer said WWE are going to allow Benoit, Rey and Chavo to work the show which is why I thought, that would be a nice idea to rip off for PPV.

They could always allow TNA workers to work on it. They worked with ECW guys back in 97 when it didn't benefit them in any way. I don't know why they have a problem doing it with TNA when it will benefit them in getting a decent buyrate. Do they see TNA as a threat?

It's possible that since ONS pulled in such a good buyrate that they'll realize that there's an audience for it and Vince will let them do more this time around, like bring TNA people in. Yeah, TNA wrestlers will be getting exposure, but they'll be making money too. Whereas last year they weren't sure about the second part. Although that's just wishful thinking I guess.

At least get Jerry Lynn so we can have RVD/Lynn.

Threat? No.

Competition? Yes.

It would never happen.

TNA isn't any more competition right now than ECW was. The lowest buyrate for an ECW PPV was Barely Legal, it had 80,000 buys. Has any TNA PPV even managed half of that yet?

Don't you think TNA would want something in return? Sure, they would be getting massive exposure from being on a WWE PPV but I think TNA management would see it differently. I think they would see it as you use some of our talent if your willing to do the same for us. I don't think it's a smart way of thinking as bringing in outside talent could make your own talent look bad. Not only that but you've gotta think that if they did use TNA guys then they would be jobbing all the way to WWE guys and that wouldn't be good for them.

Anything to avoid another pointless nostalgia trip, yes.

ECW was great, they brought it back, put on a good show, yadda yadda yadda. It's dead. Please, leave it dead. There's already enough desperate nostalgia in the name of attempted buyrates on the regular shows. And the inevitable 'WWE vs. ECW' storyline wasn't that great first time around.

The David Von Erich Memorial Cards were as blatant 'commercialism off of a death' as wrestling has ever seen. If those shows were your motivation, then, yes, I'd have to say that this would be in bad taste.

I think Vince worked with ECW because he saw how popular ECW was in the northeast, during that time frame, and he tried to latch onto something hot. Also, he had to have been desperate, and looked for anything that would counter WCW dominating the ratings back then.

Vince isn't desperate; at least right now anyway, and probably see's TNA as a threat to him, much like WCW was back then, albeit in a much smaller way.

They were definitely blatant commercialism, I mean, this was a man who actually created family members when his real sons kept dying off. But to the people in Texas and to the people following wrestling in magazines like PWI, etc. it was indeed a big event, even pre-Wrestlemania, and people saw it as nothing more than a tribute card. It wasn't until the Von Erich saga kept continuing with Mike and Chris passing that it became obvious of how warped Fritz's line of thinking was and how desperate he was to continue the cash cow even after the tragedies.

The When World's Collide PPV was the main motivation, the Von Erich Memorial just initiated the discussion. My way of thinking was it was that particular card where Eddie was first able to break somewhat in the U.S. and it would be a good testing ground to showcase possible future talent from Mexico, Japan, indies, ROH, etc. - in addition to Eddie's close friends in the industry - and a style of wrestling WWE typically doesn't do. If they can put JT Smith, Balls Mahoney and Axl Rotten in a one shot PPV, why not other guys looking to showcase themselves for the biggest company in the world.

We can expect a match between Benoit and Malenko at the ONS PPV to honor Eddie, if Benoit decides to stick around.

If they didn't do it for Owen Hart, then why would they do it for Eddy Guerrero?

The Hart Family didn't even like the RAW-Owen tribute, let alone a memorial card. Eddy's family were appreciative of the tribute shows. There wasn't any wrongful death or negligence lawsuits filed by the Guerrero's and no apparent bitterness towards the McMahons. I agree that Owen is deserving of such a memorial show as well but it wasn't something that could have necessarily been done following his death. I'd like to see a DVD myself.

Dudleys are gone to TNA, Rhino and Sabu are in TNA, James Mitchell is in TNA, Dreamer is really hurt, Sandman is older, Heyman may be gone, Benoit may be gone, Jericho is taking a break, Spike Dudley got released, Storm is retired, Eddie is dead, Dawn Marie is fired, Tajiri is back in Japan. Stevie Richards will probably get released. Axl Rotten is off the wagon again. Lynn, Douglas, and Raven are in tight with TNA.

Not a lot of guys to build the show around. RVD (if he's even still around), Foley, and Kid Kash, Rey, Nunzio/Vito, Simon Dean, and the Mexicools. I guess they could drag Al Snow and Malenko out of retirement. Add Doring/Roadkill, Justin Credible (even though he'll be pissed).

It'll never happen but Steve Corino, New Jack and Terry Funk are other options. That being said, aside from RVD and maybe Foley WWE has no other big ECW star who can still go (I don't really think Rey and Benoit, quite fit that major ecw star status) It doesn't matter what they place on the card, because it'll still break even and Vince can profit off the ECW show.

ECW and Eddie Guerrero Memorial show, shouldn't be produced from WWE.
