SWF News and Notes for 12.17.05

The next few months could be critical for the SWF, as they have to build a legitimate, main-event challenger to El Luchador Magnifico. His presence with the title has helped continue the period of stability the company has had recently in the main event scene (barring brief wobbles with Johnny Dangerous and Danny Williams) but Magnifico is suffering from a problem that is one of the worst that can plague a heel champion - too few strong face challengers. The Spike Jenkins 'loser' run that led up to Ashes 2 Ashes showed some promise, but eventually turned into nothing more than a confirmation of well-worn wrestling theory - the bookers usually lose their nerve around putting such a notorious failure over, and he loses in the big match as well. Now Magnifico is facing Todd Cortez, who does at least have a submission victory over the World Champion, but after a year that has mainly seen him having a good run with the Hardcore Title and feuding with Landon Maddix in the upper midcard, opinion remains divided over whether Cortez is ready for the top slot. He is clearly comfortable in the main event matches, as shown by his unsuccessful challenge for the title against Toxxic earlier this year and in several high-profile matches since then, but backstage sources doubt whether Cortez's microphone skills - never the most prominent of the federation's - are up to the job of cementing him as the new superstar he would surely become if he beats ELM. Rumours still persist of a Cortez triumph, but as is usual in the SWF, the smart money seems to be on Magnfico.

Many of those calling for a Cortez victory are doing so by pointing to one of the other most prominent matches on the card, the final of the Cold Front Classic between TORU Takahara and JJ Johnson. Takahara would make a suitably monstrous heel opponent for a newly-crowned Cortez at the Clusterfuck, whereas Johnson's UFC-influenced style could play off nicely against the Urban Legend's martial background. However, it is worth bearing in mind that TORU can play face as well as heel and could be used as either a monster face to end the reign of the cowardly Magnifico or as an impressive opponent for ELM to overcome by nefarious means. Meanwhile, although Johnson is still a heel there have been flashes - such as the end of the CFC Battle Royale, and in the Cruiserweight Title match against Landon Maddix - where his no-nonsense gimmick has connected with the fans, and in any case Magnifico is such an accomplished heel that virtually anyone he faces will get face heat. Perhaps the most telling fact is that with Takahara’s very limited grasp of English and Johnson’s legitimate throat injury that still prevents him from speaking much it will be the World Champion who will have to carry the bulk of the mic time leading up to the match at Clusterfuck, and confidence will be greater in Magnifico’s abilities than in Cortez’s.

It’s the end of another year, and it’s time for Wild vs. Dangerous again. This time the duo aren’t fighting over a drug-running storyline but over a rather more realistic breakup in their team morale, and with the addition of a retirement clause. How long any retirement will last for is a moot point - the SWF being somewhat lenient in that regard - but sources say that it is, for the moment at least, legitimate. As to which member of the record-breaking tag team will be bowing out some point to Johnny Dangerous’s greater age, plus his two failed runs with the World Title, as evidence that he is calling it quits. Others postulate that Wildchild is genuinely unhappy about the fact that his long-term tag partner has twice been raised to the highest point of the SWF while he, who even when they were both faces always got the larger pops, has never been awarded the belt, and has decided to try and make his living elsewhere. However, rumours that Johnny Dangerous might be taking over the SWF’s website appear to have some foundation in fact, and it would be difficult to see how he could do that while constantly on the road with the company.

Those of you who have been following ‘Smark Enough’, the SWF’s reality show where viewers get to vote who they want to see get a guaranteed SWF contract, may have noticed something familiar about new SWF arrival Kevin Coyote. It is in fact Kevin Douglas, who was voted off the show in the first couple of weeks but who was awarded a contract by the SWF anyway due to the promise they saw in him. The ‘cocky upstart’ gimmick may have been done to death, but with a background from Smark Enough where he was legitimately disliked by the other trainees and received heat onscreen from William Heartford III for his attitude that he already knew how to wrestle (he has done a couple of years work in several indy promotions under a variety of names) he at least has a solid foundation for it.

The Landon Maddox / Max King angle isn’t very clear at the moment; King’s choice of Maddix as his tag team partner for a tag title shot would point to a ‘crazy tag partners who hate each other’ theme so beloved of Thoth during his booking run with the company. As for the match at Ramadomination, sources say that’s it’s still completely up in the air as to who will win (which probably means that only the bookers know for sure who’s doing the job).

I would so totally watch "Smark Enough!" Judge stretching out trainees = RATINGS~!

Who'd be on the show with him? Drazon, I hope; talk about the "Odd Couple."

Probably the last time I had free time, or thereabouts.

I ran out of ideas, anyway; the HOLT Report was originally devised to advance storylines, but nobody ever gave me anything to work with, other than Card. There's only so much shit that I can come up with on my own about other people's characters, especially without prior consent.
