I'm interested in what you consider your favourite console of all time? I'm not interested in the best as in "GameCube/PS2/X-Box is the best because the graphics are awesome", but more of what system over time has proven to be a great source of fun and games.

As for myself, I think I'd pick SNES. It had a great variety of adventure games and RPG's, plus a little of everything else.

Mine would b ethe megadrive (genesis to most people) so it wasnt as powerful as the SNES but i love sega games (sonic always has and still owns mario) and even though it did have a few too many platformers it made it up with some class games like dune 2 and shadowrun which was the best version of it on any system.

My top three choices:

#3: TIE, Sega Genesis & Super Nintendo (HAH, it's really a top FOUR!)

These two systems were the yin & yang of the gaming industry for their time.  The SNES boasted far better hardware, which generally made for better fighting & sports games, plus they had the Square license for RPGs.  However, the Genesis had better 3rd-party software support, and for whatever bizarre reason, whenever both systems released 2 different versions of the same title, the Genesis one tended to be superior (Aladdin, Shadowrun, X-Men, etc.).

#2: Nintendo Entertainment System

The grandaddy of 'em all, the NES was the first home system to move beyond the simplistic one-screen blockiness of the Atari days and take video games up to the next level.  It boasted quite possibly the greatest software lineup of all time with the Marios, Zelda, the Castlevanias, the Megamans, Final Fantasy, plus a thousand other awesome titles.

And, the #1 Super Duper Pick of all time is........

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

... PLAYSTATION 2

Yeah, I picked a new system, and you'll LIKE it.  My reasons:

1. The first Playstation was one of the best systems of all time, with some of the best games & series of all time (Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, etc).  Now, the PS2 can still play all the PS1 games, plus its own titles.  This was the first time that a superior upgraded system was able to do that (and don't wave the Genesis's ability to play Master System games in my face, honestly, there were maybe four games in total that Sega ever released for it that were worth playing).  Now on top of THAT add the built-in DVD player, and you've got my choice for Best System Ever.

I agree. SNES all the way. I owned so many games for that system. I think it says a lot about a system. When a picky player like myself owns over 30 games, then the system is good. I only ever ended up buying like 3 games for my N64 and about 7 for my PSX. Gamecube, I obviously can't rate on that scale because it's "in progress."

But, yeah, definitely SNES. It had the best Final Fantasy's. It had some awesome Wrestling games. Chrono Trigger. Plus tons of great imports from Japan that I could never put down [super Firepro Wrestling X Premium!]

The system that I had most fun with was the original PlayStation.  It was my system all throughout high school, and that was when I spent the most time playing games.  I was more into games like Tekken 2 and 3, Soul Blade, Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid than I've been into any console game before or since.  It had an amazing library, and very few days went by during my high school years where I didn't play the thing for at least a couple hours.

First runner up goes to the PlayStation 2, which obviously has a better library in every way than the PS1 (because of backwards compatability), but which I haven't played nearly as much yet.  Second runner up goes to the SNES, which also has an incredible library, including the best game ever imo, FF6, but because I didn't own an SNES until 1995, I missed out on the experience of playing all those great games when they were new.

I have to throw in with the SNES, just out of personal bias.  Almost all of my great late-childhood early-teenager memories come from me sitting around with a bunch of friends playing the hell out of so many of the SNES games.  There were just so many solid games.

Past that, I have to make the PS2 my runner-up for many of the reasons that everybody else has said, plus it really has quite a phenomenal lineup for being in the marketplace less than two years.  I mean, GTA3, MGS2, Twisted Metal: Black, Virtua Fighter 3, and so many more amazing games in such a short time?  Good GAWD.

what games did you have for the sega master system?  I still have mine and it still works great.

my favorite system of all time is the super nintendo.  this was during my video game years as a young kid, which sadly I grew out of.  this was the first system i saved up all the money for, which wasn't easy at 11 and when I finally got it I was blown away.  super mario world ruled all, the nhl series of hockey games were terrific, mortal kombat, pink panther.  everything was great.  I recently bought one at a pawn shop for the memories but it just wasn't the same since I have grown up.

I have my master system with about 50 games

Phantasy Star

King's Quest

Wonder Boy 1-3

Psycho Fox

Shinobi

Alex Kidd in Miracle World...Shinobi World too

Plus tons more.

You have anything you might want to trade for? Some I won't part with, but others I will.

Neo-Geo, Thoth?  Wow, must be nice being rich.  All the Neo-Geo was good for was better versions of some fighting games which were available on SNES anyway.

This was true in the early days.  Then the King of Fighters series came out, Real Bout Fatal Fury... Last Blade... Garou, and now Rage of the Dragons is coming out.  Sweet.

Not if I think the best games tend to come from the Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy serieses.

I'd have to go with my old Sega Master System, i used to love playing all the platform games on there and i had it ages. Even though i owned a Mega Drive later on the SNES was easily the best 16 bit console. A friend of mine used to have a Japanese copier and over 300 games for it so i got my fix there. I remember being really exited when i first played a certain Japanese wrestling game where i could be unusual wrestlers and do weird looking moves. I thought Super Tennis was one of the best sports games of all time as well.

It may not have been a 'games console' but i've got to mention my Amiga 1200 as my second favourite machine, you can't go wrong with Sensible Soccer and Monkey Island 1 & 2.

Since those halcyon days i've sadly become a long term Championship Manager addict (a 17 season game! pretty sad by anyone's standards) who had lost almost all contact with the regular computer game world until i recently recovered long enough to buy a PS2.

Remeber all that if you have a GameStop nearby for go to GameStop.com you can get a used SNES (tested and shit of course) and all those games you miss.  I am planning on doing that soon.
