In the last day or so, I've put in 2 CDs into my DVD ROM drive. After I've taken them out, my computer crashed. The weird thing about it is that I played tose CDs dozens of times before on that drive, and nothing happened. Only thing I did differently in the last day was install the new Norton junk. Granted, my drive is about 3 years old (so it may be dying).

Any thoughts on what's causing the crash? Or on a new DVD-ROM drive?

Turn the Norton stuff off, then try playing the CD again. Norton is noted for causing conflicts with multiple programs.

If not that, then you'll have to give some more info. How is it crashing? What OS are you using?

Windows XP home. I didn't have this problem with Norton 2005, just with the newer version. Since it's XP, by default it auto-restarts. Actually, if someone here knows how to turn off the auto-restart, maybe I can see the error message. The crash doesn't happen all the time, I just think it's my DVD drive that dying. But I want to be sure before I buy a new one.

A faulty DVD drive has nothing to do with crashes, though... on XP, at least. You'll just get a no disk error popup if it can't read the disk.

First, try playing CD/DVD's with other types of files.

Then, I don't know if you turned off Norton processes, but definitely do that. You don't need them on for that anyway.
