Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Who listens to what? I'm from Long Island, but I live in Baltimore now. I stopped listening to Sports Radio about thre years ago. Whenever I go back to Long Island, I listen to WFAN (660 AM). While I was in NY over the summer, I heard a show called Sports Funk, but it never had a designated time, so I had to pretty much catch it whenever I could. I think that was my favorite show on the station. A few years ago, there was a show with a guy named Scott Farell (sp?) who had a show called The Bench. What do you guys listen to and what do you recommend?
Guest Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I listen to wfan all the time cause I don;t like the radio, except in the morning cause I dislike imus more than the radio. First off chris russo aka the maddog is a fag. I hate almost everything he says. He says kobe bryant is the best player in the nba, hahaha, he's not even the best player on his team. Mike is ok and evens it out. I like the guys at midnight shift, they know what they are talking about. --Rob
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted May 30, 2002 If you liked Scott Ferrall, then I'd definitely recommend a healthy dose of Jim Rome...not sure what station he would be on in Baltimore but I am pretty sure one of the stations has him. Ferrall and Rome, I've heard, are pretty much the same type of talk show host (never heard Ferrall but most people tell me he and Rome are alike) in that they like talking a lot of smack about sports...if you like smack, I'd advise you to give Rome a try. Guest Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I pretty much just listen to Jim Rome and JT The Brick.
Guest Army Eye Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Ferrall is a cool guy but I never really liked his radio show. The callers couldn't get a word in edgewise. A caller would nervously say something like "so uhh scott what do you think of the red wings" and Ferrall would rant for a couple minutes, and that was the extent of the conversation. The callers were so useless it was just.. weird. I could see the similarities between Farrell and Jim Rome, both talk 'smack' rather than just talk about sports, but Rome is a far superior radio host in every facet. His call-in format is kind of unique. Basically the caller becomes the host for a minute or two, saying whatever he wants to about sports, completely interrupted for 1-2 minutes. Only trouble is that a lot of the callers are not good enough to handle this responsiblity. My highest recommendation goes to The Tony Bruno show. 8am-noon syndicated on the Fox Sports radio network. This show is always a riot. JT the Brick is another good one.
Guest Anorak Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I listen to Talksport here in the UK nearly every day, its a good mix of serious and lighhearted looks at sport and 90% of it is football so that doesn't hurt either. I've got 3 favourite shows which i usually listen to. Wrestletalk: The show has got much better since Tommy Boyd was fired and Alex Shane and Simon Lilsboy do a good job covering things. Last weeks show managed to discuss British, American and Japanese wrestling and was pretty interesting. Its nice to hear Bill Apter every week as well as i spent my youth reading his magazines. Hawksbee & Jacobs: Its always a funny and entertaining show to listen to no matter what they are taliking about ( often football). Its light relief from the more serious discussions about sport. Football First in Europe: Excellent show, very in depth and interesting analysis of the European game. I forget their names but the Spanish guy, the French guy and the Italian American guy all really know their stuff and are entertaining as well. Its funny when they have big arguments about things with Adrian Durham always stirring it as well, its good radio. There's way too many adverts on the station but you can't have everything. The only time i ever switch to 5 Live is when they have exclusive commentry to a game or Sports Report is on, the phone ins are better on Talk.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I'm in the Philly area, so I listen to 610 (WIP), and occasionally to 660 (WFAN). Not really into 660, they talk too much about stuff like horse racing & golf, which make for boring radio. Plus, w/ updates every 20 minutes, the shows have no flow to them. Guest Kingpk Report post Posted May 30, 2002 I listen to WEEI (850AM) since it is THE sports station in New England (and, actually, the highest rated sports station in the nation). You can listen to it over the net at weei.com. I listen to the Big Show with Glenn Ordway almost every day (2-6PM)
Guest treble charged Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Sometimes in the summer, I can pick up WFAN where I live (only at night). They have some alright hosts on that show, and some OK callers, as well (Doris, the old lady, is one of them).
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Well, all we have down here in Dothan, AL is Sporting News Radio and, IMO, the only good hosts are Chris Russell and Kevin Wheeler(both of them do the late night/early mourning shift). For some reason, SNR decided to give James Brown of FOX NFL Sunday a 2 hour show to replace Jay Mariotti(the main guy who got me into the network to begin with) and Tim Brando for the afternoons(replacing "Nasty" Nester Apparicio(sp?), another guy I really enjoyed). Basically, after all these changes, I just stopped listening during the day and starting listening at night around 1 AM(when Wheeler(weekdays) and Russell(weekends) have their shows. There's just only so much of James Brown's pussififed "Why I just agree with EVERTHING you just said" attitude before I get sick to my stomach. At least Kevin and Chris has the balls to tell some of the idiots who call up that they are stupid.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted May 30, 2002 The problem is, Baltimore isn't exactly a hotbed of sports radio. Nasty Nestor isn't bad, and I don't follow the "scene" enough to know whether or not Stan "The Fan" Charles is still on the air, but they're the only two local guys I can think of. Philly has good sports talk stations, and DC is tolerable if you can put up with their constant stream of pro-Redskins bullshit. But since I hate the Redskins, that's hard for me to do. Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Jim Rome sucks. The little midget will kiss your ass if you do his show but if you don't he'll be critical of you.
Guest cartman Report post Posted May 30, 2002 Kingpk I LOVE Ordway's show, actually I listen to WEEI in the morning(Dennis and Callahan), Noontime(Dale and Neumie), and after work (Ordway)...it has to be by far the best lineup of sports talk radio shows in the country. As he said you can listen to these shows on the NET at weei.com and I advise any Boston Sports fan to tune in for some laughs.
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted May 31, 2002 I don't get Jim Rome here, but I like his TV show and catch his radio show whenever I'm out of town. I like to listen to Mark Madden(Yeah, that guy) on ESPN Radio 1250. He's great, actually.
Guest Army Eye Report post Posted May 31, 2002 Jim Rome sucks. The little midget will kiss your ass if you do his show but if you don't he'll be critical of you. Yeah this is true. And then we have to hear about it for 15 minutes afterwards, whoever the interviewee is, Rome has to go on and on how great he is. "John Rocker is a CLASS guy" "John Rocker what a great interview" "I'm a big John Rocker guy"
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted May 31, 2002 "Jim Rome sucks. The little midget will kiss your ass if you do his show but if you don't he'll be critical of you." That wasn't what happened when Jim Everett was on his show. He continually ripped Everett to his face to the point where Everett was out of his seat trying to dismantle Rome (this was on the Fox Sports Show). In Cincinnati I mostly listen to All Sports 1360 Homer. It's pretty good, morning there is a guy called Wildman. He's about the biggest Pete Rose mark on the planet. The 2 angry guys are good as well. 700 WLW is the biggest station in town, it has pretty good sports talk at night (when Reds games aren't on). Sports talk is good in Cincinnati because are teams are usually not that good so we have a lot to be bitter about.

What the hell is up with that lady? She seems nice and everything, but why does she have that little cough every other word? Has anyone ever asked her about that on the radio? Another caller that has come into his own is Jerome. That guy goes on the radio and yells and screams as if the Yankees losing a game is going to make him drop dead or something. "Jim Rome sucks. He continually ripped Everett to his face to the point where Everett was out of his seat trying to dismantle Rome (this was on the Fox Sports Show). Rome was calling him Chris Everett a lot and Jim Everett got up and told him not to call him that anymore. From what I have heard, Rome elicited the response that he wanted form Everett because the word on Everett was that he was soft.

I remember like 3 nights ago, Kevin Wheeler cut him off because he was just going completely insane over how "bad" Rondell White was doing. I swear, I always get a kick out of Jerome whenever he calls. Also, there's this guy from San Francisco who's a HUGE Barry Bonds mark and he calls in EVERY NIGHT to cheerlead for Barry and the Twins. I think his name is Stanley.

Living in the SW Ohio area I also listen to Rome if I'm driving to get some lunch at work every now and then. What do you think of Lance McCalister? (sp) And what a pleasant surprise it was for me to one day discover JT the Brick on 1360 one evening! Although I must admit his show was more entertaining when he was on Sports Fan Radio. BTW: What ever happened to SFR? I'm assuming it went under or something? I moved out of a market that carried it a few years ago and never heard from it since...
