Recommended Posts

I downloaded WinRar and now I can actually download rar files, but when I try to play them, it tells me that Windows Media isn't compatible with Rar files.

What Am I doing wrong?

.RAR files are WinRAR files, which you can get the program below:

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

Its a compressed/Zip type file. :) not a media file, however there may be a media file inside of it....

Yes, a rar file is a compressed file.

Right click the rar file and select Extract Here and the file will be unzipped... er, unrared.

par/par2 files are more amazing than rar files. they are fucking magic.

Say you are downloading Ass Worship 8 on DVD like I was last night. One of the 80 rar files is corrupt. I have these par2 files that I open in a prog called QuickPar. It replaces the corrupt rar, with magic. It magically fills in the missing part of the video no matter where it is. Of course there is limits to the amount of info it can replace, but the fact it can replace any given section of the file in the first place is fucking amazing.

Can anyone explain how they work? Leena?

Somehow, PAR2 files are able to store any amount of data in the entire RAR file. Don't ask me how. All I know is that they are extremely amazing, and I love them. If you use usenet, they are a godsend.

WinRAR is a terrific program.

For those who try to avoid shareware as much as I do, 7zip may be worth checking out. I still agree with you, though.

7zip won't unpack all types of files like WinRAR does though.

The shareware thing is no biggie. It's just an extra click.

Or just get a crack for it, it's not that hard.

The hardest part was getting used to not closing that extra box.

Some people find that immoral. :P

I don't, but I'm so used to the extra click that I don't care.
