Guest Just call me Dan Report post Posted May 31, 2002 Are you anticipating this as much as I am? I don't own a Gamecube, but with the upcoming releases of Mario, WMX8, etc, I want one. $150, please, it's as good as mine. Anyway. The game from the screens and movies looks absolutely fantastic. It's only here that Hogan, Hall and Nash have outstanding workrate and you can put together compelling shit! I just can't wait to have my 1st ever matchups with the nWo, RVD, Booker T, Lance, etc meeting the WWE wrestlers. Just basically can't wait for this game since it actually has some depth unlike Raw. Guest Big McLargeHuge Report post Posted May 31, 2002 I fear for this game. Don't get me wrong, I'm still getting it, but it isn't turning out as great as I thought it would be. I was hoping Aki would develop the game. Yukes stepping up wasn't what I anticipated, and frankly, it made me question the quality of the engine. I like the Smackdown games, but I found the Aki games consistently more fun to play. And RAW for Xbox was, well, bad. The graphics look great though. The animations look fantastic as well. While I can't wait to play it, I'm buying it natch, I just hope that I'm not dissappointed.
Guest Cataclysm911 Report post Posted May 31, 2002 I hate the smackdown engine, no matter what they call the game.
Guest Just call me Dan Report post Posted May 31, 2002 I anticipate this so much, it kind of sets me up for a letdown. I own Raw and still play it all the time. Good gme? no. Great game? Absolutely not. But the graphics and the fact that it is more updated than the last wrestler that came out coupled with my almost unmatched love for all wrestling games makes it a winner. WMX8 WILL be better. About the grapple system. Whay fuck up a good thing? Everyone praised THQ's wrestlers on 64 for their system and they were probably the best sellers EVER. So they change it? Why? I swear if WMX8 had that same grapple system as No Mercy it would probably be the best selling Wrestler ever and propel the Cube to a top spot in the marketing ranks. Instead they gamble. Well, I'll buy anyway.
Guest Cataclysm911 Report post Posted May 31, 2002 It's not just the grapple system that makes the THQ titles great. The triangle system adds a lot too. Punch counters grapple, grapple counters block, & block counters punch. Also, the submission moves & the like were a lot better on the n64 titles. On the smackdown engine, wrestlers get up in a sheer second or two.. no matter what bump they just took. You can chokeslam off of the Hell in a Cell? Who the fuck cares when the get right back up. If I was you man, I would just rent it first. Not only will it save you money in the long run, but you won't have to worry about taking the game back if you don't like it. Smackdown 3.5 = Wrestlemania X-8. Just after Smackdown 3, but before Smackdown 4. No thanks.
Guest C-Bacon Report post Posted May 31, 2002 what really irks me is the "championship road" option rather then season. it makes no sense for me to take someone like, the rock for example and start at the bottom wrestling guys like spike dudley for the european title before working my way up. this is the same crappy set up they had in the acclaim games. either way, i'll get the game anyway for the multiplayer factor, and i'll go through the championship mode with guys like storm and rvd. as you can see, i like realism in wrestling games, although thats a rather contradictory statement. i am however, looking forward to Smackdown 4's season mode involving the split rosters. hopefully you can do trades and drafts
Guest Just call me Dan Report post Posted May 31, 2002 Cataclysm , I hope your comments don't hold true but I have a feeling they will. I quit playing Smackdown when Smackdown! 2 came out and Hell in the Cell was in it. They took the realism stretch way too far. They took one of the coolest concepts and must watch matches and turned it into a fucking cartoon. I'll never forget my younger cousing saying check this out and chokeslamming trish off the top of the cell only to have her no- sell and scale right back up. You know, I never thought about it like that. Ladder matches in No Mercy could work out somewhat well if you made an effort to pick and choose moves/bumps and make the match look real. This bullshit will more than likely carry over into WMX8 and you can be damn sure I won't use Hell in The Cell much. Still, I'm buying it, just because I have ALL the Wrestling games on any system I've owned since the SNES. I bought Raw even when I knew it was bad. Stupid? Probably. But I like to collect them. Guest Cataclysm911 Report post Posted June 1, 2002 Cataclysm , I hope your comments don't hold true but I have a feeling they will. What do you mean you have a feeling? Haven't you watched any of the movies? The grappling is pretty much just like it was in Smackdown 3, only now you can do specials after you pick up your opponent. The no selling on knockdowns & submissions are still brutally horrid. I can't see this game being anymore than a rental. It sucks that the game developers can slack down on the games because they know that the majority of their customers are sheep whom will purchase the game for name sake. I know what you're saying though. I collect wrestling paraphenilia as well. I still buy toys, and I'm twenty years old, so I know what you're talking about. All of my walls are covered with wrestling posters, the majority of which I got from my cable company. I have a HUGE Wrestlemania 14 poster. It's 6 foot tall and 3 1/2 feet wide. I just collect random shit. For example: I attempted to win an auction on ebay for a 1985 Sports Illustrated that had Hulk Hogan on the cover. I was pissed when I lost too. c'est la vie. Guest Flyboy Report post Posted June 1, 2002 Dan, don't let other people sway you... Cata is right if you're not sure, just rent it first. But, if you want to know more about WMX8, IOWGames.com is doing a Live 12-Day Coverage on the game since Fred Cook got his copy. I have already reserved my copy, but it's up to you on what to do... Guest Report post Posted June 1, 2002 I'll probably end up buying the thing, and selling it when the next game comes out. I really don't know why THQ went with Yukes on this one, instead of AKI. I mean, it's been what? Two years? And I'm STILL playing No Mercy and having fun with it. I bought Smackdown 1 and played through the "story mode" until it got boring (very fast) and haven't touched it since. I rented Smackdown 2, and that was enough to put me off those games for good. I dunno, I just hope that they really DID take the best of both games and meld them together. I guess we won't know till we play it though. One thing is for sure, I will be picking up LOW as soon as I see it out for GC.
Guest Big McLargeHuge Report post Posted June 1, 2002 well, I don't know if this is true or not, but rumor has it that Aki disbanded or something like that. That's the reason THQ went with Yukes. If this is true, then we'd have to choose betwee Yukes (smackdown) or Anchor (Raw). Not much of a choice.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted June 1, 2002 Unless anybody played the game at E3, I don't think there should be any outward crucifying of Yukes at this stage, when there's little or no information about the gameplay engine. The company said it was going to be a new system, which tells me that it probably won't be the Smackdown engine...so let's just relax and see what happens. Stop with the pitchforks and all that. Yep... that's pretty much what I've heard. A few ex-AKI members worked on WMX8, though. Rumor has it thought that AKI is secretly planning a game (most likely wrestling) for the PS2... *shrugs* Who knows?
Guest Raven_Effect01 Report post Posted June 1, 2002 well, I don't know if this is true or not, but rumor has it that Aki disbanded or something like that. If that's true, then I won't be buying another wrestling/WWE video game for a while until the day a new video game developing company comes in and helps THQ make something even better than the AKI/THQ wrestling titles, because I'm definitely not buying a carbon-copy hybrid of the Smackdown series and Raw is War like Wrestlemania X-8 is going to turn out to be, because those gameplay systems aren't very realistic and diverse. I know, I mean, you can't tell anything from 245 movies.. that all have no selling & horrid submission, not to mention top rope manuevers, which are all identical to Smackdown. Get a clue.. if you can't believe your own eyes, what can you believe? The game may be fun if you have three friends over, but what do you do late at night when all your friends went home? I'll tell ya what, you turn this shitty game off and watch Howard Stern in your underwear..
