Less Than Jake: Sweet Gainesville ska. I live here in Gainesville, and have been seeing them since they first got together. If you like ska you've got to love them.

Fenix Tx: Ok, the first cd sounded like Blink's half-brother, which is understandable. Their new cd is good, though, better than their River Fenix stuff. It's got a little more of an edge to it.

The Ataris: Little to overtly poppy for me; I don't like the West Coast/MXPX vibe they have.

Saves The Day: Guy's a genius at song-writing, and they can play a bunch of styles. Odd that their least punk album (the new one) is what is getting them all the attention.

Reel Big Fish: Good ska band, got played out really quickly but still ok.

Mad Caddies

NOFX: Awesome stuff. What more can you say?

Midtown: I like them well enough, in small doses. They put on a good show.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Tenacious D: Is this even punk?

Sugarcult

Bouncing Souls: OLE OLE OLE. Got to love them

Goldfinger: Got to love these guys, too, even if they peaked with the the early stuff. It's still classic

Anti Flag: Simply kick ass

Pennywise: Kick Ass again

Bad Religion: Simply stoked about the LTJ/Bad Religion/Hotwater Music show.

Millencolin: Fair enough

Lagwagon: You've got to love all of it, but Hoss is still one of the best cd's ever.

Pilfers

The Living End

Suicide Machines: I saw these guys with Catch-22 a month ago. I've never seen a band get a show going like that. The most energy ever.

I'm going to add one more on here. Hotwater Music, out of Gainesville. They do some punk stuff, but I almost think of them more as rock and roll than anything else. Anyone heard or seen them?

Just for the record...none of this is punk...it is:

33% rock

33% alternative

33% emo

1% punk

That's how I classify newer's "punk"

Fenix TX...first cd was very good for its genre...and the 2nd cd shows a lot more maturity...Lechuza was my 2nd favorite cd of 2001 (Bleed American was #1)

The Ataris...good stuff, wonder how they'll be after signing with a big label now.

Saves The Day...I plan on getting the cd in a week or so...like what I've heard.

NOFX...good stuff...lots of energy

Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies...is the the Foo Fighters/MXPX and other cover band? Sounds interesting...but don;t think I'd buy a cd.

Lagwagon...probably the best of the batch of the new emo stuff...Hoss or Let's Talk About Feelings is my fav.

Suicide Machines...they get points for being local...they may be great live, but right now I'm 50/50 on them

Less Than Jake - One of my fav bands; i've seen them on ever tour they've come through in texas for the last 4 years

Fenix Tx - Lechuza was my favorite cd from last year.  I still remember when they were playing Nofx covers in small clubs.

The Ataris - These guys are alright, although I still think it was silly of them to stop playing "The Radio Still Sucks" just cause 311 was on the warped tour.

Saves The Day - I hate these guys.

Reel Big Fish - Another band I really like... put on a hell of a show.

Mad Caddies - Saw them once... alright.

NOFX - Pretty funny, if redundent.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - These guys rock.

Tenacious D - Not punk, not as good as Ween, but the D are still awesome.

Sugarcult - Eh... alright.

Bouncing Souls - These guys bore me.

Goldfinger - Their first cd was awesome.

Anti Flag - I really like these guys.

Pennywise - Bro Hymn.... nuff said.

Bad Religion - Their new cd is great.

Pilfers - The best band no one ever heard of.  Coolie Ranx was the best front man I've ever seen.

The Living End - Good australian punk/rockabilly.  "Prisoner of Society"

Suicide Machines  - Good band that got turned into a blink 182 clone.

I really like the Ataris.  I saw them at Warped Tour and they are just as good live as on cd.

I saw the Suicide Machines with Catch 22 here in Oklahoma City at the Green Door and that was ok.

For some reason Pennywise sucks to me.  I don't know why.

Bad Religion has and always will be the shit.  "American Jesus" is one of my fav songs from them along with "the Answer".

Goldfinger is alright but they're living off a cover song and that annoys the shit out of me.

Anti Flag is great.  Look for a song of theirs called "Got the Numbers".

Reel Big Fish have a good energy to them, but their songs get old really fast.

MFAGG are cool live but the all covers thing annoys the shit out of me.

Less Than Jake is a good band.  I hate ska but these guys have good vocals and lyrics that point out how hypocritical the whole punk scene usually is.

NOFX has one of the best punk anthems ever called "It's My Job To Keep Punk Rock Elite" that anybody I play it for usually likes.

Here's some other one's you might want to check out:

Dead Kennedys, No Use For A Name, Swingin' Utters, Dogpiss, Descendents(Fucking great band), the Vandalls(Kind of annoying to me), Rancid(Some of their stuff sucks), the Queers(Awesome), Mr. T Experience, Black Flag, Agnostic Front, H20 and the Misfits(Last Caress!!!!).

The punk/ska/emo scene is and forever will be dead, though.  People care more about the look now than the actual music.  Rich kids everywhere are now dressing like Blink 182 and listening to Sum 41 with their windows rolled down in the parents minivan.  Now only do you have to deal with those fags, but the one's that consider themselves "punk" and only what they consider good is punk and so on.  So next time you see a kid dressed like Sid Vicious(the "bassist" of the Sex Pistols, not the wrestler)tell him to eat your ass and that Sid wasn't even a fucking musician.  Fuck the punk scene, but the music's great.

I likes everyone on the list that i've heard of, so the rest can't be all that bad. I think lagwagon are slightly hit n miss though.

it's all about the  theory  and NOT the music.fat mike, jello, rollins are the theory  of  punk music and  its attitude  will always change but what  these  men have spoken  about the scene for the last 20years will never change

bands of this style are not about songs they are about theory and stances more so then a song. songs  die but insight  never does

Less Than Jake-- I'm a ska traditionalist, so I'm usually not fond of anything that has a hyphen. I kinda enjoyed their participation in the Bruce Lee Band with Mike Park, but that's about it.

Fenix Tx-- Bleh.

The Ataris-- Bleh.

Saves The Day-- Bad emo. Go listen to Rites Of Spring.

Reel Big Fish-- Again, I'll take a Jackie Opel recording over any of this ska-punk drivel. They really epitomized my disgust at the mid-90s ska boom. Undeserving bands that played watered down or corrupted versions of the genuine article  got most of the publicity, but that's the way fads go I guess.

Mad Caddies-- I've never really liked their recordings, but they aren't horrible live.

NOFX-- I never really liked their music, but I respect their longevity.

Tenacious D-- I love Jack Black. I thought the album was a little uneven and not representative of their best work, however.

Bouncing Souls-- I was on board with the Souls through their first three full-lengths, but since then I've been disappointed in their output and their live shows.

Goldfinger-- One of my least favorite acts ever to get MTV exposure.

Anti Flag-- I enjoy them live. I know a lot of people don't like their politics, but to each their own. Their recordings have never really done much for me, however.

Pennywise-- See NOFX. I don't like them, but I respect them.

Bad Religion-- West Coast pioneers. They have fallen off recently, but still have recorded more materpieces than any of the bands on this list ever will.

Millencolin-- Bleh.

Lagwagon-- Bleh.

Pilfers-- RIP. Again, I am not a fan of hyphen ska, but the Pilfers were something special. A superb supergroup line-up led by on of the top dee-jays in ska. I loved Coolie's solo work and his participation with the Toasters, but he really hit his stride with the Pilfers crew. This is what 311 should have sounded like.

The Living End-- I've always thought that they were a closer heir to the Clash's throne than Rancid. I enjoy them.

Suicide Machines-- I was interested in them when they released the split with the Rudiments and then "Destruction By Definition," but after that they appeared to lose direction. Are they ska-punk, or hardcore, or emo? Still, their initial offerings were the best ska-punk ever had to offer.
