Cup finals: detroit vs. carolina

Recommended Posts

Guest starvenger

Daaaaaaamn, did Detroit make a statement in getting to the finals or what?

The 'Canes will have had 3 extra days rest, but I don't see this as much of an advantage, as Detroit still gets to rest 3 days, plus they don't have to travel.

Then again, there's that entire President's Trophy curse thingie, but I think that Detroit can break that curse.  They seem to be firing on all cylinders right now.

Wings in 5.

You have to be careful.  Carolina was never expected to win any of their series, yet, they've gotten this far.  They've been under-estimated by all of their opponents so far, and Detroit might also do the same, with all the talk of the Western final being the "real" Cup final.

Will this make a difference?  Who knows.

Carolina has to play mistake free hockey.   Yes, its a cliche, but thats what they have to do.

Detroit has the talent to make them pay for any miscues in their own end.

Frankly, Carolina has to keep it as boring as possible.  They can't try and play end-to-end with the Red Wings.   The Hurricanes can probably skate with Detroit, but they don't have the finishers that the Red Wings have.

I'm a Canes fan, and I don't think they will win it.  I think it will be alot closer than people think, and probably go 6.

Well, there is that, but if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and I'll buy you a Coke...

Wings in 4 or 5...I cannot see it going any longer

Man, I just love seeing Patrick Roy take a beating...it just gets me off...um...nevermind that. And holding the Aves to 3 shots in the 2nd...and ZERO shots for Forsberg in the last two games, great stuff.

We were robbed at a Detroit vs Toronto final...but the Wings will fly through the series...I honestly thought no matter the outcome, whoever won the west was going to win it all.

And is it too late to get in on this coke deal?

The two series I wanted to see this year were Toronto/Montreal and Toronto/Detroit.  Even more reason for me to hate the Hurricanes.

At least I won't have to listen to ESPN give constant verbal hummers over Patrick Roy and Peter Forsberg till September now. There's your Conn Smythe 'winner'....sitting at home. They all but gave him the award weeks ago.Bye Pete..go sit in Sweden for another regular season and convieniently return for game 1 of the playoffs in 2003.I guess if a guy that talented sat for 82 games,he ought to come back fresh and dominate.Bye Patrick....the Wings are up 6-0 and dominating the entire game and all ESPN can talk about is Roy....fuck ESPN and their hockey coverage anyway. The feed from the game went out for a couple minutes and I said to my dad "They probably are pissed the Avs are getting beaten so thoroughly and said 'screw it,cut the signal'."I miss CBC.

Carolina has earned respect but I'd be a little surprised if the series goes more than 5 games. If the Wings play with the same grit and intensity and forecheck the way they have recently,it's probably a sweep. The depth of talent differential is so large....can Carolina overcome it?Possibly but not likely.

Well, that's why they play all four rounds.  I dunno who the Wings MVP would be.  For Carolina it would either be Irbe or Jeff O'Neill.  Hell, just give it to O'Neill for playing nearly a whole game with one eye swollen shut, I say.

BTW, TC, I *will* hold up my end - or at least send you a loonie to cover the cost...

hmm...I picked the Pats to win the superbowl and everyone gave me shit..lets see...

Canes in 7.

I know first hand how well Hasek plays in the big games (outside of the olympics and that subsequent playoff run).

Soft goals all over the place.

If the Red Wings play well, it's going to be very hard for Carolina to win.  Detroit just has too much.  It may be like the finals in 1998.  Every game was close until the last one, but the Red Wings won them all.

Detroit is going to have to have to hand the Canes 2 games in order for them to win, and I just don't see that.  Wings in 5.

Conn Smythe winner for Detroit is going to be Yzerman, but if Hasek keeps throwing SO's out there, he may get it.

Oh, speaking of the Olympics, isn't it kinda ironic (in hindsight) that Roy declined to go so that he could concentrate on his performance in the playoffs?  Or is that just funny, or coincidental?  Damn you, Alanis...

Well, Roy did play more play-off games this year than the 3 Olympic goalies did (one more than Joseph did), so I guess it helped him out there.

Man this is so sweet to be back in the finals where we belong. And I love the Whale and always have but my wings are taking this thing in 5 or less, but they will all be close games, like an above poster said though we can just close the deal better.

And Conn Smythe? I say its Yzerman just based on the fact he led the team here on one leg, and he will break yet another feat of winning a gold medal, stanley cup, and conn smythe all in the same year, damn could not have happened to a better player.  (honorable mention McCarty whoooooo)

Would it be wrong of me to wish that the Wings lost horribly, just to get a small measure of revenge on Syxx for his constant Leaf bashing?

If the Wings win,Hasek is the most likely Conn Smythe winner unless someone has an incredible finals. The 5 (possibly more by the end) shutout record will do it for him.

Irbe would be the choice for Carolina.Erik Cole does kick ass though.

Wings in four.

Only way Carolina can win the series if the trap can not break. If the trap breaks than Carolina is going to see that golf course real soon.

See, I've had faith in Carolina, since the first round. My best friend was pushing New Jersey on me, so I told him that Jersey was going out to Carolina. They did. Montreal eliminated my Bruins in the first round, so I wanted to see Mont. go out. They did. I hate everyone on the Leafs (except for Roberts), so I wanted Toronto out. So, look out Det., I hate the Red Wings.

In all seriousness, I think that Carolina can win. Nobody has taken them seriously, just because they win a weak division, well, they have 12 wins in the playoffs, and it's only a matter of time, until B-B-C starts going against Det. Hasek is a great goalie, but he does give up soft goals, on deflections, etc. Look at how Carolina won game 6 vs. Tor. Deflection. I'll say the same thing that got me hung up on when I called a sports-talk radio show. Carolina Hurricanes in 6 games. They'll win 1, 3, 4, 6.

I'd like to see the 'Canes take it, but Detroit just looks too strong heading into the series.  Wings in 6.

The only reason they look strong heading into the Finals, is because Roy had an off night. Keep in mind that Det. didn't sweep Colorado, they lost 2 at home, and are human. I still think that age will catch up to Det. in this series, probably when they are chasing Hurricanes around the rink. Paul Maurice is a great coach, and he will think of a game plan to defeat Det.

I grew up a Whalers fan, and hope that Carolina can take it home for Carolina and The greater New England area!

Go Whalers/Canes!!

Given that Carolina plays a trap game, there probably isn't much of a chance that they'll need to chase the Canes around.  But I agree with the age issue.  Fedorov and Lidstrom will have to make their presence felt.

On the Carolina end, they MUST get the offence going if they want to win.  They only scored 9 goals against Toronto, so EVERYONE needs to step it up offensively, the BBC line especially.

But Toronto plays a clutch grab style trap game that makes almost every game look rather boring, pathetic. Of course thats how they gotta win.

Im sick of the whole age argument, I consider it experience. If age was so important the wings would already have been ousted, the fact that a 37 year old on one leg is leading the team, while a 41 year old Larionov was amazing in game 7 dispells that age myth, with the condition the players are in these days age is not nearly as important, like I say to all my friends I will put my money on "old men" like Detroit anyday rather than a young team like the Canes or Oilers with half as much the depth as us. And yes depth is the key concept as we can roll out four lines, which tires our "old" guys less, and Carolina can only roll three out not counting PK.

And yes Treble I u have every right to root against the wings, most leaf fans around these parts want my head on a platter and I likewise want theirs, so your more than welcome. Though I am still losing sleep at night thinking about who I would have actually cheered if u and the avs went to the final. Man I hate both of those teams like no other.

Age will not be a factor for Detroit.  The only way they lose this series is if they take the Canes for granted.  I can't see that happening, and even if it does it will probably only be 1 game, at which point the Wings would wake up.

Guest What?!

Wings in 4 with Hasek winning the Conn Smythe as he adds maybe 2 more shutouts to his playoff record.

bleed im a sanitary engineer on the red wings, glad to see your head is still working all right, remembering those classic grade school questions, I thought with u predicting a Carolina win that u had become "certifiable".

Yeah, just figured I'd try to get you not paying attention. One of my pet peeves is people using "we" and "our" when referring to thier team. I use "my boys" or something simular. Certifiable? Not yet, but I do think that The Canes have a shot.

And, I was serious in a previous post, I got hung up on when I called a sports talk radio show, after I predicted Canes in 6. The guys were fucking assholes.

Was it a Detroit station or a national one? Although a national one wouldn't likely have talked hockey long enough to do a fan call-in.....
