I bet that screwed up Mel Kiper's daggone Top 10.

I also am shocked, I know people didn't necessarily want to trade up to #1 because of what it would cost them, but couldn't the Texans have demanded less, or were they just that in love with Mario?

Williams is a great prospect, no doubt about it. But a number one pick? No way. The Texans should just trade out of the pick and get some picks next year or another pick in the top five. Houston will be kicking themselves in five years, IMO. Maybe they figure they will suck again next year, and want to get Adrian Peterson. (Assuming he comes out)

I bet that screwed up Mel Kiper's daggone Top 10

Speaking of which, here is Mel Kiper's draft BEFORE the Williams story broke.

1. Houston Reggie Bush, RB* USC

2. New Orleans Mario Williams, DE* NC State

4. N.Y. Jets D'Brickashaw Ferguson, T Virginia

5. Green Bay A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio St.

6. San Francisco Vernon Davis, TE* Maryland

7. Oakland Ernie Sims, LB* Florida St.

8. Buffalo Brodrick Bunkley, DT Florida St.

9. Detroit Michael Huff, DB Texas

10. Arizona Matt Leinart, QB USC

11. St. Louis Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt

12. Cleveland Kamerion Wimbley, DE/OLB Florida St.

13. Baltimore Haloti Ngata, DT* Oregon

14. Philadelphia Chad Greenway, LB Iowa

15. Denver (from ATL) Santonio Holmes, WR* Ohio St.

16. Miami Antonio Cromartie, CB* Florida St.

17. Minnesota Jason Allen, CB/S Tennessee

18. Dallas Manny Lawson, OLB NC State

19. San Diego Winston Justice, T* USC

Christ, this just throws everything in the air.

The NY Jets have probably just offered their entire draft to the Saints.

Now that the Giants have Arrington, I hope they take either Sinorice Moss or Chad Jackson if either is available, with Toomer getting up their in age and Burress being the headcase he is.

ESPN.com is reporting the Texans have signed Mario Edwards as the Number One pick.

HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $54 million deal, making him the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft Saturday.

Of the $54 million, Williams is guaranteed $26.5 million.

Texans general manager Charley Casserly had cautioned earlier in the week that anyone concluding the team had decided on Southern California tailback and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and was only using Williams as leverage was mistaken.

The choice of Williams by the Texans could dramatically alter the landscape of the early segment of the first round. The New Orleans Saints, with the second choice, have indicated they would snap up Bush if he fell to their slot. But the Saints had hinted, in general, that they might entertain trade offers for their pick.

The availability of Bush at the No. 2 spot would almost certainly elicit trade offers.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN.com senior NFL writer Len Pasquarelli was used in this report.

As I said in the offseason thread, didn't see that one coming.

Very interesting... no doubt that Mario is a great physical talent. But, history shows taking such an early pick on a DL is risky. Let's see how it goes. While Bush is undoubtedly one of the shiftiest and quickest backs I've ever seen... it's not guarantee he'll be a great NFL back.

Do the Saints take Bush now? Even though Deuce is still relatively young, he was injured most of last year, and has been a workhorse back for a handful of years now. But, they also gave him the big contract last offseason. And they have some decent depth already with Antowain and Michael Bennett now.

It certainly is interesting now.

The Texans just passed on Michael Jordan for Sam Bowie.

To use an old Mel Kiper quote..

"It's quite obvious they just don't understand how the NFL draft works."

I actually think that Bush goes to the Jets now. Which is sad because we won't see another great

(clip includes Keiper's "They don't know what the draft's all about" line.)

I agree with most of the thoughs on here about Bush, in that this means the Saints will be wheeling and dealing for the next 16 hours to see who's willing to pony up the best deal for Reggie Bush.

The Jets are in the driver's seat since they have two 1st Round picks (#4 and #29, IIRC) but Green Bay could also pull it off if they swapped the #5 pick, Javon Walker, and some other pick later in the draft (hopefully a 3rd rounder) for the #2 slot.

Thats who they want.

Well, they've got a good shot at him because either the Titans or Jets will pass on a QB in favor of Bush or Brick.

The only things between the Raiders and Leinart are the in-fighting of the Titans' coaching staff (Young vs. Leinart) and the possibility of a late swoop by Arizona or someone else to trade up to either #5 or #6.

(I'm assuming it'll be #5 because the Niners seem set on Vernon Davis while the Packers need to fill a LOT of holes)

I'm not sure if they'll trade with the 49ers because the Saints want Hawk or Ferguson. By the time the 6th pick rolls around, one, if not both will probably be gone.

Brick will be gone by the #6 pick, as the Jets and Packers are both teams that could use a stud left tackle.

Hawk is more questionable. It depends on the Pack not taking him, which is strictly dependant on Ferguison still being on the board. That won't happen, though, because I think that the Jets will snatch up Brick if they can't get Bush at #2.

Scenario-

The Saints trade the #2 to the Jets for the #4 and #29 picks, with possible shuffling of other late-round selections.

How it will end up-

The Saints will pick up Brick at #4 barring a shocker. At #29, they'll probably pick up C Nick Mangold of Ohio State if he's on the board. If not, they'll get the best LB available, such as DeMeco Ryans of Alabama or Thomas Howard of UTEP.

The best-case scenario would be Brick at 4, Mangold at 29, and Ryans at 34.

Reasoning-

Brick is a no-brainer.

Mangold is a necessity if he's available because the departure of C LeCharles Bentley leaves the Saints with only one Center left on their roster. Having a big hole in the middle means an increased probability of a DT knocking Drew Brees on his ass all day.

On top of the need at Center, the other big need, LB, is a well-stocked position that will still be around at the start of the 2nd round.

This is how I see the first 15 picks of the draft shaping up now. I have Bush going #2 but it won't be to the Saints. This is the first draft in a long, long time that I have no clue as to what is going to happen.

1st - Houston Texans Mario Williams, N.C. State DE

2nd - New Orleans Saints Reggie Bush, USC RB

3rd - Tennesse Titans Vincent Young, Texas QB

4th - NY Jets D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Virginia OT

5th - Green Bay Packers AJ Hawk, Ohio State OLB

6th - San Francisco 49ers Vernon Davis, Maryland TE

7th - Oakland Raiders Michael Huff, Texas DS

8th - Buffalo Bills Haloti Ngata, Oregon DT

9th - Detroit Lions Ernie Sims, Florida State OLB

10th - Arizona Cardinals Matt Leinart, USC QB

11th - St. Louis Rams Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt QB

12th - Cleveland Browns Kamerion Wimbley, Florida State DE

13th - Baltimore Ravens Brodrick Bunkley, Florida State DT

14th - Philadelphia Eagles Winston Justice, USC OT

15th - Denver Broncos Sinorice Moss, Miami WR

Feel free to criticize my picks and I will try to defend why I have them placed there.

I think every guy at ESPN who was on Bush's cock just started sending death threats to the Texans......so that means everybody at ESPN just started sending death threats.

This is funny. So will Leinart fall out of the top 5 or even the top 10?

The only quibble I have is Leinart falling all the way to 10.

It's realistic, but that means that Oakland and Buffalo, two teams with long-term QB issues, would be passing on Leinart.

(Oakland has NO long-term QB... Aaron Brooks is a goddamn idiot and Marques Tuiasosopo is an underachieving journeyman. JP Losman ain't cutting it in Buffalo and Kelly Holcombe isn't a long-term solution.)

I wouldn't be shocked if Matt Leinart COULD go to Detroit at #9 if he dropped that far. I know Millen has to win now, but if he drafts from best player available perspective, I cannot see Ernie Sims above Leinart on their draft board.

Dama this has to make your day, with Reggie not going #1.
