I'm always torn over progressive taxation. Like, it makes sense that the rich have to do most of the heavy lifting tax-wise for obvious reasons, but I don't think it should get to the point where they're being penalized for prosperity. I hate that I'm liberalizing. What a drag.

I think when you penalize people for achievement, it makes people lose motivation to work harder. When people work less, advancement is slowed. Progessive taxation just seems completely unfair.

It's not fair, I know, but if the U.S. government is going to indiscriminately spend money like the world's biggest Valley Girl, then that money has to come from somewhere. Ideally, we wouldn't need to spend so damn much, but I'm being just as idealistic as the left-wingers who think the government should be in the health care business, and public schools work.

Yes, if America starts annexing countries, then maybe you can make that claim. So far as I know, Iraq isnt a colony.

We've been annexing countries for over a century: Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Cuba, so forth. Who cares, though? We were always a day late and a dollar short in the whole imperialism thing. Also, Iraq is more of a puppet state than a colony. De facto colony, I guess.

Iraq is not a US colony, and never will be. For an area to be a colony, the colonizing power has to have firm control, and people from that country need to be able to travel to the colony. Clearly that's not the case right now.

Frankly, I think the US should have more overseas territories and colonies than it does now. Maybe then the rest of the world wouldn't be so messed up.

I agree. If the US was all about imperialism, they would have taken Cuba a long time ago. Instead, they just let that 3rd world Commy hell hole sit peacefully 90 miles off shore.

As for snuffbox, I hate all income taxes. My solution is to either abolish it all together, or have everyone pay the same rate.

It is ridiculous that people making so little get 25% taken out. Thats why if you hate taxes, you should never ever vote for a democrat. Dems never cut taxes for anyone. They may say "We're going make the rich pay their fair share", however that doesnt mean they would cut the taxes for the lower class. They never cut taxes for anyone.

So I should vote Republican...so then at least really rich people can get a tax cut and I can pay a little extra for it?

While there is a point at which taxes can be too high as to stiffle economic growth, that point is NOT a 0% tax rate.

Having a billionaire pay 40% while a minimum wage worker pays 5% may not seem fair to you, but you're forgetting about the 60% he does get to keep. That's still a shitload of money, and a helluva incentive to work hard. I don't think Bill Gates is going to wake up tomorrow and decide he isn't going to develop the next generation of software because he'll only make $300 million on it instead of $500 million.

Yeah, I can see the rest of the world seeing it that way too.

No. You should vote GOP because they are less likely to raise the taxes your currently pay.

I'm a little more worried about whether or not my daughter will inherit a $8 trillion debt and have clean air and water than I am with getting an extra $50 in my paycheck.

Under this administration, youre probably getting $50 less a week than with that Damn Liberal Clinton.

Another interesting thing - The more overtime you work, the higher your tax percentage...what was that about not penalizing achievement etc?

Taxes are the price we pay for living in a civilized society. If you want the conservative dream of no taxes and gun control, Mogadishu is wonderful this time of the year.

It wasn't me.

Anyway, I hope the Democrats retake the Senate (which they won't) so Harry Reid can be minority leader. He's a crazy motherfucker.

1. He's a former boxing champion.

2. Reid, during a filibuster:

Looking around the desert, I noticed [rabbits] didn't eat cactus, or I thought they didn't eat cactus. They didn't eat desert cactus. They ate my cactus. We planted a bunch of cactus. I can't imagine how they can do it, but they eat some cactus--not all of them. I don't know the names of the cactus they don't eat. Some of the names I know. They don't eat the cholla. They don't eat the beaver tails. They don't eat a plant that is not native to Searchlight, Ocotilla from Arizona, a long stringy plant with stems that go up very high. They don't eat those.

So I have replanted my house several times. They are good, these rabbits.

3. Is Harry Reid gonna have to choke a bitch?

In July of 1978, a man named Jack Gordon, who was later married to LaToya Jackson, offered Reid twelve thousand dollars to approve two new, carnival-like gaming devices for casino use. Reid reported the attempted bribe to the F.B.I. and arranged a meeting with Gordon in his office. By agreement, F.B.I. agents burst in to arrest Gordon at the point where Reid asked, "Is this the money?" Although he was taking part in a sting, Reid was unable to control his temper; the videotape shows him getting up from his chair and saying, "You son of a bitch, you tried to bribe me!" and attempting to choke Gordon, before startled agents pulled him off. "I was so angry with him for thinking he could bribe me," Reid said, explaining his theatrical outburst. Gordon was convicted in federal court in 1979 and sentenced to six months in prison.

Are people embarassed to explain why they support this current administration? Is it reasons like homophobia and gullibility to that 'patriot' rhetoric? Do you get your information in truck stops and junkyards?

People forget to, that in a lot of industries the companies that generate all this money, do more to damage to everyday life which should incur paying more taxes.

Example: When I go to work, I drive approx 5 miles each way, in a standard 4-door sedan.

Now, a big trucking company with the 18-wheelers, are driving all over the place 24/7, polluting the earth 400% more then I do, and those trucks are responsible for tearing up the road and putting pot holes everywhere. This is where I think it is reasonable that the owner of the company pay more in taxes because that money is needed to help fix roads and the enviornment that their company is destroying.

Snuff, do you post at the Pit? If not, you should go post this same question over there in their Politics forum, you will get all the laughter you are looking for.

Most of the die-hard conservatives that used to post on TSM have flocked over there. Why, I don't know, but that is why the CE forum is so dead because it seems what is left here is mostly liberals and a few republican/conservatives that aren't charged up about their party. So some of us liberals have made way over there to lurk and post.

Why, I don't know

They were sick of being modded, that's why.

You mean when the continually hurled personal insults to amp up their arguments?

I think when this question was posed over at the Pit, the Marney gal went on a hell of a rant about how Americans should have killed more towelheads or something. It was definitly pretty funny.

Maybe it was the folks from the other messageboard that voted their support for this administration here at TSM as guests or something. Clearly, whoever voted in the affirmative here doesn't feel like being bothered with a simple question like 'why?' Im sure it has something to do with killing the dang sand-people.

Both aren't innocent. At least at the other place, both sides can do it and it won't matter.
