I jacked them, so what.

 

Players widely rumored to be dealt are KG, AI, Kenyon Martin, Zach Randolph, Chris Mihm, J.R. Smith, Lamar Odom, Joel Pryzbilla, Al Harrington via sign and trade and many of the Bulls (simply because there's a logjam at guard). I'm sure there will be more added. This is a quick fix thread, simply because there's lot's of talk and I don't have time to make a humongous, all encompassing thread.

 

Note: I do not want this to be any and all things Lakers. That's not my intention. What I do want is for this to be discussion about all teams that aren't in the playoffs. Trade and free agency stuff should go in here, because it's unfair for us fans of other teams to clog the thread about the playoffs with our bits about the offseason.

I've read the Bulls and Knicks are interested in Harrington, and Minnesota will go after Joel Przybilla, who is a local there.

The first thing I want to know, is what is this early termination shit? Webber and Stojakovic among others are eligible for it.

 

I think it's pretty interesting that players can opt out of a contract early but teams can't.

 

There are three types of options:

 

Team Options give the team the right to invoke the option year. There can be only one option year (except in the case of rookie scale contracts), and the option year can't be for a lower salary than the previous season.

 

Player Options give the player the right to invoke the option year. There can be only one option year, and the option year can't be for a lower salary than the previous season.

 

Player Early Termination Options (ETO's) give the player the right to terminate the contract early. An ETO can't occur prior to the end of the fourth season of the contract (which implies that the contract must be for at least five seasons).

 

Here's a summary of the differences between an option and an ETO:

Options can occur only when one season remains on the contract, while ETO's can occur when two seasons remain if the contract is for six seasons.

 

 

Options can be included in any multiyear contract, but ETO's are allowed only with five or six year contracts.

 

 

Options can be held by the player or the team, but ETOs are always held by the player (i.e., there's no such thing as a team Early Termination Option).

 

 

Option years may not have a lower salary than the previous season. ETO's have no such restriction.

 

 

A contract with a player option can be extended when the option is not exercised. A contract with an ETO may not be extended if the ETO is exercised.

When the rumor mill starts, the Lakers will be among the teams mentioned.

 

If Minnesota puts Kevin Garnett on the market, there likely will be talk of the Lakers trading Odom, Mihm, Bynum and a couple of first-round draft picks to acquire him.

 

But the Lakers likely will have to use other means to improve their team.

 

The Lakers are over the salary cap and will have a payroll of about $53 million. They won't have to pay the luxury tax, projected to be between $64 million and $65 million, and that seems to be the one thing Lakers owner Jerry Buss cares most about these days.

 

Devean George probably won't be asked back and could test the free-agent market. Jim Jackson, picked up in March, also might not be asked back.

 

Aaron McKie, who played in just 14 games because of a left quadriceps tendon tear, will be 34 next season and will make $2.5 million. The Lakers have to make a decision on whether to buy him out, trade him or hope he can contribute.

 

The Lakers could get help through next month's draft. They have picks in the first (26th overall) and second (51) rounds.

 

They also will have the $5 million mid-level exception and $1.65 million bi-annual exception to lure players with.

That's good, but I'd try to wait for the end of summer league before doing anything. If scouts see a good Bynum, it'll be a no-doubt move for the other team. On the other hand, if I go and see a good Bynum, it better be a no-doubt move for LA to keep him.

 

The MLE is going to be for a point unless Cassell comes. If he comes, the MLE will be for a backup PF or SF. If Cassell comes, there's no doubt that KG's coming to LA, we may as well book it.

 

On the other hand, if Bynum goes to Minnesota, will he be that good. He won't be being taught by Kareem anymore and could turn into a bust. Interesting.

Grant, Kwame, George. Especially Grant. Kwame's not making that much until 07-08, when he makes 9 or 9.5.

 

Realistically, a shitload of things could happen this offseason. A small market team could throw a huge deal at Ben Wallace (I'm looking at you Atlanta), Chris Wilcox, Mike James or Al Harrington. Stojakovic could cut and run, and there's a connection somewhere that I don't want to talk about, with him being stated as taking lesser money to go there. He's talked about this on multiple occasions.

Even though I really don't care for the Pistons, I'd hate to see Ben Wallace go anywhere else. But I guess it depends how much money is thrown at him. Whichever team does that though better also have a low post presence that can score.

KG is going to go where KG can win a title. The ball is in his court, he will do what he wants. I'm sure he doesn't want to deal with first round losses, he wants a Finals trip quickly.

 

Can he win a title in Chicago, Sacramento, Golden State, LA? Only he knows. I don't know if anyone that realistically would get him can win a title within the next 3 years.

Oh, I meant a center. I don't really have faith in Chandler. I don't want to part with Hinrich and/or Gordon though. They could be the faces of the franchise. Garnett would be great to have, of course, but I'm getting attached to the new guys. I believe the Bulls are way under the meaningless cap, but it's not Reinsdorf's nature to spend a lot on the team.

Gordon, Chandler and the two first round picks for Garnett would be a trade where everyone wins, in my opinion. The Bulls would be legit contenders in the East. Minnesota would be able to move Garnett somewhere where he wouldn't haunt them every season and rebuild their squad at the same time.

 

As for the question regarding matching contracts, it doesn't apply in this situation because the Bulls are under the cap.

That's a problem any franchise with a superstar has. You will almost never get fair trade value back. Philly will go through the same thing when trying to deal AI. Of course you try to get the best players possible to help your club, but you also look for other things like expiring contracts to free yourself up to make a run in FA market.

 

I remember last year the Kings dealing Webber for Kenny Thomas, Corliss, and Brian Skinner. While none of the 3 guys we got are in Webber's league in terms of talent, we also no longer have a disgusting contract to pay out to a guy with a hole in his knee. Thomas has turned into a serviceable PF. Corliss is just sort of there and we already dealt away Skinner. (which I am still puzzled by because he's the perfect backup center)

I hadn't thought of the Bulls dealing both of their picks, but it makes sense. The team's so young that they don't really need any more 20-21 year-old guys for the time being, especially if it means keeping most of the Nocioni/Hinrich/Deng/Gordon/Duhon collective.

Rick Adelman, like many others (Don Nelson, George Karl, etc.), fits into that weird mold where they can get almost any team to be successful and reach the playoffs, but can't do anything once they get there. On one hand, I'm okay with the decision to move on but I just hope they find someone good. Ironically, I would think Larry Brown would be perfect for this situation, but I'm not sure that they could work anything out with the Knicks.

That was hot air and emotion coming out of Artest. He wasn't going to play for free. The player's association wouldn't allow it. It's not realistic. Adelman was on the way out and everyone knew it. The only thing that would've kept Adelman around was a deep run in the playoffs.
