Rescue Me

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty lost in whats going on. I completely missed the entire 2nd season. I'm waiting for my hollywood to get the 2nd season on dvd but till then, I'm watched Tuesday's episode and I'm trying to figure out everything still.

If you want a little recap (I'll spoilerize it if you didn't), here's the main arcs that carried over from season 2:

- Lou fell in love with a prostitute and gave her his life savings so she can pay off her pimp and leave that life forever, but he found out she was just scamming him. Now he's severely depressed.

- The chief's wife got Alzheimers so he had to deal with that (and his gay son coming to help take care of her) before putting her in a home.

- Tommy and Janet reconciliated, only to have their son Connor killed by a drunk driver while he rode in the street with his bike. Janet blames Tommy because he wasn't paying attention to him and didn't make sure he got his helmet and pretty much ends it for good. Tommy is obviously distraught and talks with Uncle Teddy and his brother about killing the driver, and Teddy agrees to do it. They track him to a train station and Teddy shoots the guy, leading to him being arrested and put in jail awaiting trial.

That's pretty much it. Franco, Garrity and Probie pretty much got new story arcs this year.

Thank you for all that, that helps me a bit but I still want to watch Season 2 on dvd.

So the woman Lou was seeing at the end of Season 1 was actually a prostitute or is this a new girl?

That reminds me: What happened to Sheila's lesbian lover that beat the shit out of her? It seems like she's disappeared but I can't remember if/how they resolved that storyline.

Didn't Tommy get involved and then the lesbian went off on Sheila saying that shes isn't gonna waste anymore time with her since she is obviously still wanting Tommy.

This season's just rolling along on a great clip right now. Tommy having to deal with all the women in his life calling at once was absolutely classic.

But that ending was definitely a head scratcher. I really have no idea what to make of it.

So much great stuff in tonight's episode. The stuff with Lou, Tommy/Garrity/Maggie, Tommy/Janet/Johnny, Tommy/the plastic cup  Probie and his "not gay" room mate, etc...

A little off topic...but does anybody know where I can find Denis Leary's christmas special to download or at least the rant on Paris Hilton (it's for a paper I'm writing).

I don't like that Sheila is being played off 100% of a goofy comedy character now. I understand she had a very serious storyline last year with losing the baby and being abused, and sure, maybe they had to tone it down a little for her. But it just seems like they can't think up something to do with the character now.

I finally caught tuesday's episode and the show is just fucking rocking. People need to start paying more attention to this show because it's so much better then almost everything else on the air.

The final scene was tremendously exciting/confusing/hilarious/intense/sexy. When you can wrap all those elements into a routine arguement/angry sex scene, you have something going.

The homeless man with Lou was killer "you win loser".

Maggie with the 4 other boyfriends, Probie "I'm not gay", The chair scene and the sperm bank scenes were great but the classic moment was of course the 4 way crazy chick convo.

The final scene was stupid and basically made me lose whatever respect I had for the show and it's writers.

It was classic male power porn - rape fantasy, how original. He attacks her but of course she really likes it and is into it. No means yes.

If you want that trash you should visit some usenet groups. There you can read all about girls that are raped by men whose cocks are so big that the women love it and turn into willing sex slaves.

It was not an angry argument turns to sex angle. It was random rape that the woman enjoys and gets into. (Because that happens a lot, women love being randomly raped)

This show is really vastly overrated, while it does have it's moments most of the characters are just gimmicks, the plots are contrived, and the entire thing appears to be an ego driven mindless male power fantasy. There isn't a single female on the show who is anything other than a complete joke.

It's basically The Man Show with a more sophisticated presentation.

And don't get me started on Dennis Leary's acting. It isn't acting when you play yourself. One of the reasons Michael Chiklis gets praise on The Shield is that he acts - he is totally different from his onscreen character. Leary just plays himself, and the show appears to be increasingly written simply as a vehicle for his ego.

The show is better than most network TV crap but it's nothing to get all excited about either.

The rape scene does not offend me in the sense that the rape itself is offensive - it just offends my brain and dramatic sensibilities. Let's turn one character into a flat plot device to show everyone what a giant cock Dennis has. He's so bad-ass he rapes someone and they ask for seconds. It's the stuff of bad romance novels, not quality dramatization.

You've never heard of women having rape fantasies?

A rape fantasy is different than reality. Just because a woman has a wacky fantasy involving being raped by some stud doesn't mean the women actually would appreciate being raped in real life.

Find a women with a rape fantasy, rape her and report back on how much she loved it...

It was lame and utterly contrived. If you are going to defend it do better than that. That shit belongs in the romance novels that the lunch lady reads.

I do demand at least a tiny bit of realism from my drama, not scenes and characters that are transparently contrived just to make Dennis look bad-ass.

Men who rape their ex-wives end up in jail. And again, this wasn't a scene where there is some light-hearted bickering that leads to sex, it was him attacking her and her liking it because Dennis is just that good.

If you like that that's fine, but it's silly dreck aimed squarely at their target demographic. You can like it in a "dude, that was awesome!" kind of way but let's not pretend it's great writing and drama.

I like Nip/Tuck, but I fully admit that's dreck too. Another male fantasy show that brings the ridiculous, unbelievable melodrama. Sadly Rescue Me is a lot closer to Nip/Tuck than it is to The Shield.

Being true to the characters and story is a lot different than feeding the audience whatever cotton candy garbage you think they want and will eat right up.

The scene where Tommy beat up his brother was another scene that really didn't make any fucking sense. He beats him up, some guys try to stop him and hold him back, then they let him go and he beats him up some more, they hold him back again then apparently lose interest, he beats him up some more, etc etc. Even after he puts his head through a car window which can kill someone. It was just silly and contrived. It was another scene that was just Dennis ego-stroking. From a writing perspective it made no sense. If his friends are going to hold him back have them hold him back, or else don't bother. Maybe he can wriggle free and get in a last shot or two but not this "man we better stop Tommy - wait I'm bored never mind - no stop him again - wait what's that over there?"

It was written like pro-wrestling where 12 security guards can't handle Matt Hardy.

I did argue the points. You didn't. That's how we got here. Scroll up buddy.

And I already said the scene didn't offend me for women's rights reasons or anything like that. It offended me by being stupid and assuming I'm stupid.

Your contribution has been 3 one-liners. I'm not the one arguing the points? Or did I miss the brilliant screed you wrote in invisible ink?

Anyway I'd be interested in what someone vaguely articulate thinks. I certainly have more ammo for my side, but there is no point arguing with weak gimmick poster.

Are you just going to repeat that 100 times? That's your contribution? It's not lazy writing at all that Tommy's ex-wife just happens to have a rape fantasy that is awakened by his manliness?

By the way, women who have rape fantasies don't find out they have them by being raped. Are you serious? Yes, maybe one in a million women enjoy their first rape.

If that's all you have to add here please stop...or you can just keep repeating that one line over and over again like we are having a real discussion.

Edit: I'm done talking to you, it's a waste of my time. I should have stopped already.

If you don't respond intelligently, (or at all), then yes, I do have to repeat myself, moron.

By the way, yes women do find about their liking of the fantasy that way. Some homosexual/bisexual men find out that way too.

And no it's not lazy writing, because 1) it's just not, and 2) you haven't seen where they're going with it yet. Maybe, you know, wait and see where this progresses.

Since you are now at least trying to be somewhat rational I will continue.

Here is what I mean by lazy writing: contrived characters and situations that are not true to reality, previous behavior, etc.

I think you would have a hard time defending any of the female characters on the show, so I won't go into that. Instead let me go into things that have happened to Tommy:

1: Little girl is alive, 30 seconds later they are pulling a sheet over her head and Tommy is the only one who bothers to try to revive her. That scene did not ring true at all.

2: Tommy and the girl he duct tapes. First the girl is attracted to him for no good reason. He immediately is going down on her, which of course he is great at. (Because Tommy is god) Then he duct tapes her mouth shut.

Now, really, wtf would happen if a guy some girl just met that night started to put duct tape over her face. (Let's not forget the recent case of a girl raped and killed recently with her face wrapped in duct tape) She would probably start freaking out and fighting. At the very least it's highly insulting and that would be the end of the sex.

The scene is played for laughs, I get it. I did find it funny. But it doesn't ring true. It's very hard sometimes in fiction to tell an honest story, follow the natural progression of the characters, etc. These guys aren't even trying. As a joke it works but it's just cotton candy entertainment.

3: Tommy beats up his brother, his friends try to stop him then apparently lose interest, I went over this already.

4: After Tommy has put her lover's head through a car window (which could have killed him) and injured her arm pushing her, Tommy comes to his ex-wife's house totally unsupervised and they have a bland conversation about who gets the silverware. Again this scene does not ring true at all. He isn't immediately hit with a restraining order? Why would she even let the son of a bitch into the front door? Wouldn't they at least meet a neutral, safe setting like a lawyers office?

All of these scenes establish Tommy as a bad-ass and are either cool or funny or shocking moments, but they don't really make any sense outside of contrived TV-land. The scenes are not believable nor do logical consequences ever occur.

Again, if you like the show fine. I like Nip/Tuck and it's the same. All I'm saying is don't claim it's incredibly well scripted drama - it isn't. It isn't honest storytelling, it's very much TV. They know their audience and they go after it.

Maybe the duct-tape girl had a rape fantasy too? At some point "all the characters are just THAT fucked up!" is a little silly, that's just another way of saying the show is contrived.

contrived TV-land

Yup, TV is pretty weird and not true to life. Yours has an off button just like anybody elses.

And yes, I did read your points. Most, (if not all), of them are what make the show fun to it's fans, though.

Fun for it's fans is fine. Again, I compared it to Nip/Tuck for a reason. Nip/Tuck is so silly and melodramatic sometimes, but I still like it. But it's really a guilty pleasure type of show.

As I said, Rescue Me is like The Man Show - it gives the target demographic what they want.

I was tempted tp bump this topic, but I left it for dead.

Not loving this season like I have the first two. I'm just not feeling the side stories this year. Especially Franco's one with his daughter,

Quite frankly, Im getting tired of everyone dying on this show. I mean, the show is still good and entertaining but it's gotta stop with the constant deaths.

It isn't as miserable as last season, but nothing could be more miserable.

Yeah, but it opens up the whole "Will Tommy go back to Janet or move in with What's-her-name?"

I'm actually VERY intrigued at how they're going to wrap it up and set up next season next week. It definitely feels like this is the series finale because everything looks like it's going to wrap up (the crew breaking up, Tommy leaving)
