why did the commentaters always used to say that 'the longer the match goes, the more it favours the hammer' or 'he doesnt get warmed until 10 - 15 mins into a match'. i started watching around 87 and never recall the hammer having any lengthy matches or even many wins for that matter! was this just a false gimmick put over by the announcers similar to the anvils fake football career?

Well they may have been going on the basis of his career prior to when you started watching, keeping in mind Valentine was around for a while even back then. A former IC and tag team champion in the WWF in the NWA a former US champion and former tag team champion with ric flair.

I think the comment on his endurance may stem from those matches probably in NWA that would go to those longer than 15 minute marks.

I always felt that since the announcers used to say this prior to Flair coming into the WWF in 1991, that Valentine WAS seen as the WWF's version of Flair (blonde hair, NWA guy, figure four, face flop, ect...) and they just built onto it with the "60 minute man type thing"
