Why I HATE Canadian TV

Recommended Posts

Guest

The CRTC says that not only do Canadian channels, but also Canadian cable providors must have a certain amount of Canadian content in their line ups. To remedy this, Cable companies like Rogers will splice in Canadian commercials on their American channel feeds.

Ok, normally that's cool.

But this is where the "Canadian Content" thing gets fucked up.

RAW is on TSN up here. Fine.

TSN usually has to censor or pre-empt RAW for various reasons. Mind you it hasn't been as bad as it was a few years ago.

When RAW moved to TNN, I was over-joyed. Finally, I wouldn't have to worry about whether or not Curling would cause me to miss RAW. Or that if someone got put through a table, I wouldn't have to deal with TSN's tactic of cutting to canned crowd footage, and only HEARING the table shot.

So.. this is all good? Right?

Wrong. Normally when an American & Canadian channel are airing the same program - the cable company will switch to the Canadian channel's feed so that they don't have to worry about putting in the commercials themselves. Well, low & behold, what does Rogers do with TNN's version of RAW? They don't even show it at all!! Rogers switches TNN to another feed, and therefore instead of RAW it's always some other show like Star Trek or some other lame show.

I don't know if this is because of some sort of Canadian content regulation.. or because of the deal that TSN has for airing RAW in Canada, but it really annoys me.

I just had to vent about that.

Anyone else?

where I live I have expressvu satellite and the tnn raw is the feed that tsn is putting out.  i fucking hate that because anything that tsn decides to edit out, gets edited out of the tnn show as well.

It's because of the TSN contract with WWE.  Only the first TNN episode has been shown on TNN in Canada.

BTW Dreamer, my friend has ExpressVu, too, and that's what his does, as well.

No PPV's are ever censored, to my knowledge.

And yep, we got the whole Trish/Terri match. TSN can be pretty lax about things. One second they'll edit out a female getting tabled, but then they'll leave it in when RAW does an instant replay of it.

Wow, that sucks.  Blame Canada, or at least their telecommunications regulators.

But it did make me notice one thing: is it just me, or are there a disproportionate number of Canadians and Brits on this message board?  Just wondering, because it's weird that half the posters are from somewhere besides the US, since it has by far the largest population and all.

Our TV sucks...bottom line. But it will improve, hopefully.

Look at our sports coverage! How lazy is Canada?

All we do is just simulcast with ESPN, ABC, Fox or something instead of actually having our own coverage of it!

Well except for the good ol' CBC...their Fifa, Olympic and Hockey coverage is the best!

Who cares what feeds you get from a country. Everything is corporate so why bother bitching at the company, if they are putting out the same quality as the american programs with a little bit of editing. Boohoo if you can't get Raw because of curling, i'm actually one of those people who likes curling.

Why did they do this?

When cable was becoming popular, Canadian television thought that American programing was a threat towards us, so thats why they made such programs as Muchmusic, TSN, CBCWorld, in order to keep Canadian content on, instead of American.

I do.  I find the practice of putting the feed of the Canadian channel over that of the American's to be VERY annoying, considering the possiblity that the schedules are not always the same.  For example, last week, I missed most of the end of the Lakers/Kings game due to the station from Ottawa (The NewRO) putting their feed over that of NBC's for The Tonight Show.  The problem was that the Tonight Show was delayed due to the basketball.  Pissing me and countless other sports fans off.

You're obviously missing the point.

"Everything is corporate so why bother bitching at the company"

Because the company IS the corporation, duh!

"if they are putting out the same quality as the american programs with a little bit of editing."

Sorry, but editing OUT whole segments and confusing the viewing audience as to what exactly happened is NOT "the same quality."

Only stuff on TSN.  Anything on Sportsnet, the Score or PPV stays intact.

Which is kind of funny, though, for many reasons.

I remember the CRTC coming down hard on TSN for showing the Dudley's tabling women, and for showing Jericho using a hockey stick as a weapon. But, I don't think that they've ever jumped on the Score/Sportsnet's back. Aren't they [TSN/Score/Sportsnet] owned by the same company [CTV?] these days?

TSN is owned by CTV

SportsNet is owned by Rogers

TheScore is partially owned by WWE.

When the Score started showing WWF Smackdown, Metal (which ended the era of syndicated wrestling in Canada) and the laughstock XFL, WWF bought a share of The Score.

Don't forget the Trish promo.  That's the only one I've seen, and it's nice, too.
