WrestleMania XXIII Main Event (RAW)

Recommended Posts

Anyone who thinks UT should retire with the streak intact is being dumb.

You have no idea how much it hurt me to write that. I'd never want to hurt Bob Barron's feelings. But it's my opinion!

It will be Cena versus someone. The problem is:

- Randy Orton is damaged goods right now. No way they build towards him in the main event right now.

- Carlito is just not over enough right now to be in a marquee match at this point.

- Shelton Benjamin has fallen off the face of the earth, apparently.

- Triple H would be logical, but we've seen that before. Enough times already.

- Edge...see Triple H.

- Austin isn't coming back. Neither is Rock. Hogan will probably work the show, but against someone like Big Show or Umaga.

So I'm thinking...

Your RAW main event at WrestleMania 23 is:

John Cena vs Shawn Michaels.

Don't know why, just what I'm feeling right now.

That doesn't seem that far-fetched. However, who's the face/heel at that point? They've GOTTA pull the triger on the Cena heel turn by then. But it also seems fairly realistic that a turn by either HHH or HBK wil break up DX. I don't think an HBK turn is that out of the question. Like Invader, I don't know, I too am just feeling it.

HBK/Mysterio, seems too irresistible. If anything, these guys won't have anything fresh to do unless they want Shawn to give Doane/Nitro/Carlito a rub (yeah, that's silly)...Shawn will "need" a high profile match and Mysterio is probably the best bet for that.

I'd love to see Batista / Undertaker or Batista / Benoit for Mania, but yeah Taker should go over. If the streak were to end, it should've been to Kane (which I would have loved) or Orton (I wouldn't have minded, but I think everybody in the Staples Center would have rioted).

Sadly with the above two matches I stated already, another problem with Wrestlemania is that they're running out of dream matches and the two biggest ones won't happen because nobody will agree to job.

The only plausible threats to the streak (when it became one) were Kane the first time and Orton. I don't see the need to end it. I realise it's only one show during the year(albeit the biggest by far), but considering the Undertaker wrestles maybe ten times a year, a streak ending that they've so often mentioned could be disastrous.

I don't think there will be any uber-match like Austin-Hogan. If there was any plans of this, they would have done something other than a tease at last year's Homecoming and HOF ceremony. There hasn't been any interest shown from Austin and he won't come back from retirement just to fall to the big boot and legdrop. If there's any Hogan match for the 20th anniversary of Hogan-Andre, it will be something like Hogan-Big Show.

For the Raw main-event, we don't have many options in who will be in the main-event : either HHH, Cena, Edge or HBK. The only way one of these won't be in the main-event is if we have a surprise like we had at WM21 and someone gets mega-over in time for the Rumble. We'll probably see Cena-HHH II, with Cena as a full-blown heel and HHH as a face for reign #11. I like the Cena-Michaels option. I think they only had one match togheter and, since they're hell-bent on having Cena as their #1 babyface, who's a better antagonist than dick-heel HBK ? The only time he acted heel since he came back was in his promo last year in Montreal and it was like he hadn't missed a beat since 1997.

Edge should face Taker. They both have the undefeated streak card and, if Edge keeps his heat until Wrestlemania, he could get over huge by ending Taker's. However, they haven't shown they're willing to get 100% behind Edge. I don't know either if ending Taker's streak would be a good thing or something that must be left intact.

As for the Smackdown main-event, Batista vs Lashley is a no-brainer. If there's no Austin/Hogan, and unless they comp the hell out of the place, I see WM23 being more like WM8 at the Hoosier Dome : huge arena but not sold out.
