Guest Report post Posted June 7, 2002 In Mick Foley's first book, he does his share of Marc Mero bashing, particularly '96-era Mero. But I've been watching King of the Ring '96, and Mero looked pretty good in his match against Austin, so I have to wonder what Foley's deal is/was. Yeah, I know Mero really sucked in '98, but he seemed good here. Was he always this good before the knee injury fucked him up?
Guest The Mountie Report post Posted June 7, 2002 I remember a good Mero match vs Al ‘Leif Cassidy’ Snow at In Your House: Final Four. Under the ‘Marvellous’ moniker (hey, alliteration!), the match with Droz from BreakDown is memorable for the awesome ‘Marvelocity’ finish. He was also quite a good comedy character especially during the feud against Sable. Speaking of Mero, here’s a trivia question: who beat Marc Mero to force him into ‘retirement’ from the WWF? Guest Report post Posted June 7, 2002 If I recall correctly, in his book, Foley states that he and Taker "tore the house down" at that King of the Ring. Other than the few delightfully sick bumps you could expect from a Foley match back in the day, I thought it was a snoozefest. Mero and Austin, however, rocked it with the best match of the show. Guest Report post Posted June 7, 2002 answer: GILLBERG!!! -------------------- I gotta say that I feel bad for Mero, I thought he was going to be a huge star in either WCW (as Badd) or the WWF...but his knee injury completely fucked up his career...not to mention being completely overshadowed by his wife upon his return as the "Marvelous" one...sad Mero from 94 till 97...AWESOME! Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted June 7, 2002 He had some awesome matches with DDP back in the day.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted June 7, 2002 Mero was pretty decent wrestler and had a series of great matches with Page. His best match was with Pillman at Fall Brawl 1995 that went 30 minutes...I think it was U.S Title contender Match or something.
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted June 7, 2002 That match went like 35 minutes including overtime right?
Guest Choken One Report post Posted June 7, 2002 I'm pretty sure that ended at 29:50. might be wrong.

Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted June 8, 2002 mero always looked very sharp in the ring to me. i think the popularity of sable grew too fast and then the wwf created a storyline about it which only made mero look bad because sable would usually come out on top. if the wwf had kept mero and sable together maybe their career would have turned out differently.
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted June 8, 2002 I agree. Sable became one of the main attractions in the wwf and the main reason half the guys were there. No one cared about Mero anymore.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted June 8, 2002 What ever happened to him in WCW? I thought I saw him sitting in the front row and he got in a fight with Jarrett or something like that?
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted June 8, 2002 i don't think he was allowed to compete because of a clause in his wwf contract.
Guest Report post Posted June 8, 2002 Johnny B.Badd vs. Brian Pillman from Fall Brawl 95...very very underrated match...definitely one of my favorites of all-time (it's my favorite WCW match as I started watching WCW with StarrCade 93 so I haven't seen much before that time)...IMO, ***** (yeah, that's right...five!) Sure, it didn't have any meaning in the long run, but as a simple pro wrestling match, just great!!!
Guest Report post Posted June 8, 2002 I case you want a second meaningless opinion...Here's Scott Keith's review: Opening match: Brian Pillman v. Johnny B. Badd. Badd's character seems have to gotten all the gay out of his system by this point, with the exception of the Badd Blaster, the confetti-shooting gun he still brought with him from time to time. Winner of this thing gets a shot at Sting's US title at some indeterminate point in the future. Pillman gets a small heel pop, despite his sickeningly babyface "California Brian" gimmick that he was stuck with at the time. Badd was literally improving daily by this point. Longish feeling out period to start with not much going on. Headlock, armdrag, etc. Match gets moving about 8 minutes in, as Badd works Pillman's leg, causing a shoving match to erupt and Pillman to dust off the old heel persona from the Hollywood Blonds days. Pillman starts running like a coward and cheating, drawing mad heel heat from the crowd. Badd gets the slingshot legdrop for two. We get the double KO spot, with Pillman recovering first and hitting a cheap headbutt to take Badd down and get more heel heat. I'm in awe of Pillman's in-ring heel turn as we watch. Badd gets tossed, but suplexes Pillman to the floor and hits a pescado (dive over the top to the floor). Nice. Back in the ring, and Badd tries to come off the top, but gets dropkicked in mid-air by Pillman. Badd gets a powerbomb for two. Badd counters Pillman's finisher, the tornado DDT, by shoving him to the mat for two. Pillman with a russian legsweep into an armlock submission move as time winds down. Badd escapes and hits the TOOTY FRUITY PUNCH OF DOOM for two. Pillman hits Air Pillman for two, then a backslide for two as time expires at 20:00. We need a #1 contender, though, so it's overtime. They fight to the floor, then back in as both miss a dropkick. Pillman gets a sleeper, reversed by Badd, which is one of my least favorite moves in wrestling, next to the Indian deathlock when performed by anyone not from Japan. Pillman goes for a superplex, but Badd pushes him off and sunset flips him off the top for two. Badd tries a powerbomb (like earlier in the match) but it's reversed to a rana for two by Pillman. The psychology here is positively All Japan-ish. Pillman with a crucifix, countered into a fallaway slam by Badd for two. Badd hits the top rope rana for two. He tries again, but Pillman reverses to the tornado DDT, this time hitting it for two. Pillman goes to the top, but he's knocked off and to the steel railing where he hits his jaw. He does that spot all the time, and it always looks great. Badd nails the somersault plancha for good measure. Back in, but when Badd tries the slingshot legdrop again, Pillman counters and it misses. I'm really digging the psychology here. Pillman tosses Badd and hits a tope suicida, which is really amazing considering the shape his body was in at the time. He goes for a springboard dropkick, but misses and crotches himself on the top rope. They criss-cross and Pillman tries a cross-body, but Badd uses his weight advantage to fall on top of Pillman for the pin at 29:57. Just a spectacular match. ****1/
Guest papacita Report post Posted June 8, 2002 I still consider Mankind/Undertaker from KOTR 96 to be one of my all-time favorite matches (everything between them just clicked that night), and I'd rate it even higher than Hell in a Cell. JMO though... As for Mero...he was great before the injury, and I'll even go as far as to say he was pretty good post injury. The problem was that the bookers absolutely fed all of his heat to Sable in 98, basically turning him into a joke character. I mean, not to sound sexist or anything, but when the man's playing the corner person for a Women's feud between Sable and Jackie, that's not exactly gonna help his career. Had they gotten Marvelous Mero away from Sable and focused on some gold (I think he could've made a great contender for the I-C or Euro titles in mid to late 98), he probably wouldn't have bombed. Guest Report post Posted June 8, 2002 (everything between them just clicked that night) What part of a thirty minute nerve hold do you consider "clicking?" Overall, I'd give KotR '96 a thumb-in-the-middle. The only good matches were Mero-Austin (****) and Bulldog-HBK (***; would've been higher had there not been so much resting from Davey). Everything else on the show--aside from the sick glee Austin took in destroying Jake Roberts and his post-victory interview--sucked WITH AUTHORITY~! Oh, and Sunny was hot. Guest bob_barron Report post Posted June 8, 2002 Mankind v. Taker was sooooooo boring at KOTR. Mankind just rested forever. Dont tell 411 but here's my review of the match- Undertaker attacks Mankind from behind with the lights out and does the crazy punches. Mankind goes to the eyes but just gets his ass kicked more. Mankind tries to climb the ropes but gets chucked outside. Mankind stalls. Back in- Taker chokes him and tries to rip the mask off. Taker works him over. Blind charge hits elbow and Mankind gets a bodyslam. Taker sits up so Mankind clotheslines him. Taker stomps away but Mankind chokes him. Running knee. ‘Rest in Peace’. Mankind works him over on the outside. Back in- Taker hammers away but gets clotheslined. Mankind throws him out. Taker goes into the steps. Mankind comes at him with a chair and gets it kicked in his face. Taker backdrops him on the concrete and a chair. Undertaker chairs him as well and chokes away. Big boot, Mankind blocks tombstone and gets a swinging neckbreaker. Legdrop- Mankind pokes him. Taker blocks Mandible Claw but gets kicked. Elbow- zombie situp. Mankind hooks a nerve hold. Crowd chants rest in peace. Taker breaks it and kicks his ass. He clotheslines him out and they brawl on the outside. Taker’s head is against the steps so Mankind runs into him. Ouch. Mankind slams him on concrete. He tries to do an elbow but Taker chairs him. Taker chairs him in the head. Back in- Taker stomps away and works him over. Flying clothesline but Mankind gets a piledriver for two. Mankind starts going nuts and pulls his hair out. Mankind takes the urn and is about tp use it but Paul Bearer takes it. Mankind gets the Mandible Claw but Taker chokes him. Paul Bearer “accidentally” nails Taker with the urn. Mankind hooks the Mandible Claw and its over. They’re later matches were much better. *1/
Guest papacita Report post Posted June 8, 2002 Maybe it was cuz I was still in my mark stages, but I thought the match was cool. First, Taker starting off with those punches (up to that point, the fastest I'd ever seen him move), the brawling was nice (especially when Foley went for his apron elbow and Taker got the chair up to block it), and I don't mind restholds as much as other people do. Today, maybe it'd be pretty boring but for what it was at the time, it was a hot match IMO.
Guest RetroRob215 Report post Posted June 10, 2002 My favorite Mero moments are... 1. Mero-Pillman 2. Mr. Perfect turning on Mero and costing him the IC title. 3. Mero/Sable-Goldust/Lune (WM XIV)
Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted June 10, 2002 I ranted the Pillman/Badd match from fall Brawl 95. If anyone wants me to post it here just give the word. 20 minute regulation match plus 10 minutes of sudden death overtime, and not too many restholds. The alst 10 minutes they knocked eahc other out like 5 times and the end wasnt a big finisher, more like a inside cradle or something.
