Best movies/tv shows no one has ever heard of

Recommended Posts

Guest Zack Malibu

I remember watching Legend of the Overfiend back in summer of '97 at a house party a friend of mine was having.  She wanted something to watch and make fun of while everyone was drinking, and stuck that in (it was her brothers).  Needless to say, I think we got more than we bargained for.

other movies I have that you may have not heard of/seen:

Cherry Falls

Body Shots

Drive

The Mutilator (1983 horror movie...I know there is another movie with the same name)

Street Knight

Rage Of Honor

Rage And Honor

(Two movies, similar title...Rage Of Honor has Sho Kosugi as an agent tracking drug dealers, and Rage And Honor is a Cynthia Rothrock flick.)

The Vault

Up The Academy

Just One Of The Guys (Hi-F'N-larious)

Under Oath

Starstruck

Avenging Angel (this was part 2 in the Angel series, about an honor student who was a hooker by night...she "reformed" in part 1, and the sequels had her as a vigilante using her old "connections" to help her out)

Kolobos

Combat Academy

Maniac Cop 3

American Kickboxer 1

Martial Law

Martial Law 2

Beach Babes From Beyond

Revenge Of The Ninja

Ski Patrol

Ski School

Ski School 2

Blown Away (not the big budget one, this one had Corey Haim and Corey Feldman)

The Funhouse

Innocent Blood

Entire Bloodfist collection (1-8)

Black Scorpion

Black Scorpion 2

I've got the series pilot of a show called "Where's Rodney" from 1989 on NBC.  It had one of the kids from "Honey I Shrunk The Kids" as a young Rodney fan, and whenever he was in trouble, he'd "wish" Rodney to come help him out.  It didn't make a hell of a lot of sense, but for a diehard Rodney fan, it was an entertaining half hour.

I've got every (except 1) episode of The Random Years from UPN.  It got cancelled after like 6 eps.

Hell, this is just stuff off the top of my head.  I know I've got more obscure stuff, but when you own a few thousand DVD's and VHS combined (and that's just MOVIES/SHOWS, don't get me started on wrestling tapes) you tend to forget things.

Has The Young Ones ever been shown in America? Most people here in Britain know it of course but i wouldn't know about how many Americans would. In Britain we get to see a lot of the American sitcoms/dramas but i'm curious to whether people have seen/heard of the following British comedy shows.

Brass Eye

Spaced

The League Of Gentlemen

I'm Alan Partridge

Black Books

I believe that The Young Ones was aired here in the States for a time - I believe on Comedy Central.  It was several years ago, though, and I could never get into it.

Sorry, never been a big fan of British humor.

Never heard of any of the ones you listed, Anorak.  Of course, this is a country where a lot of people have never heard of Fawlty Towers, so that's not surprising.  Most British shows are just never aired or released over here.  I'm still trying to scrounge up a copy of the Neverwhere miniseries.

Big Trouble in Little China (one of the best movies ever made.  Yes, I really did type that.  Yes, I'm serious.  You won't find much of anything else as campy or as goofy fun as this Carpenter flick.)

Pitch Black (somewhat underrated modern sci-fi flick with Vin Diesel in total badass mode)

I remember seeing a trailer for Pitch Black and the film didn't appear for another year or so, i did catch it at the cinema when it came out on a limited release but i don't know what caused the long delay. Maybe the film lost potential momentum due to this and slipped through the cracks a bit, i don't think it did too badly in Britain though considering its modest budget, that genre has a reliable fanbase.

Anybody seen these films? What did you think of them?

I've not actually seen 'Come And See', but i'm very interested in war films and i'm curious about it. Apparantly many consider it the best war film ever made, Orson Wells considered 'Cross Of Iron' to be the best but i've seen that.

Picnic At Hanging Rock

Junk Mail

Mystery Train

Hani Bi

The Witchfinder General

Cross Of Iron

My Life As a Dog

Come And See

Ride The High Country (US title may be different, early 60's Peckinpah western)

Carnival Of Souls (original version?)

Festen

Dream Life Of Angels

Deranged

Sorry, never been a big fan of British humor.

I've always enjoyed a fair bit of American humour but outside of The Simpsons and a few other animated shows i've always greatly disliked most conventional American sitcoms. Friends, Frasier, Seinfeld etc just don't do anything for me, i find British shows like Spaced and The League Of Gentlemen to be far more original and less formulaic. I do love American humour in animated shows/films and stand ups though.

American drama series are consistantly better than those in Britain in recent years, some British dramas are excellent and are as good as anything else but they are usually either one off specials or small 2-4 part series and are more infrequent. The long running British dramas are mostly dire, nothing as long running and consistant as Homicide, Oz, Soprano's or even ER. The quality one off feature length dramas made in Britain are increasingly released as proper films, 'Last Resort' (70-80 minutes long) was a key recent example which recieved excellent reviews, it was actually directed by a Polish documentary maker was essentially found a niche in the arthouse/non-multiplex audience.

Although we have more than our fair share of crap i still think British TV is the best in the world, an average week of terrestrial TV (just the five channels) usually has at least a few rewardingly intelligent/entertaining shows on. Many of these are documentary series, 'Modern Times' was brilliant ('The Death of Yugoslavia' especially), 'People's Century'  and 'The Nazi's: A Warning from History' were both essential. This isn't to say i don't often despair of the TV schedules but there's always something hiding away that restores your faith that TV can be a vital medium and not just the home of worthless junk.

I pretty much agree.  I'm not into British comedy, but I do recognize that often times, like with Monty Python, it's innovative and original.  I LOATHE American sitcoms.  Always have.  That's as bad as it gets with comedy, IMO.

As for British drama series, I don't know about the quality.  Although I'm a fan of "Touching Evil" and "Cracker".

And I really wish "Ultraviolet" had been given a chance.

I've seen some of the flicks you mentioned.

Deranged - Best flick ever made about / inspired by Ed Gein.

Witchfinder General, aka "The Conqueror Worm" - great horror flick, with a fantastic performance by Vincent Price.

Carnival of Souls - GREAT old school horror with twist ending.  Watch this one, not the crappy remake.

Hana Bi aka Fireworks: probably Takeshi Kitano's strangest movie, definitely not the one that new fans should see first.  Slower than his usual pace, too.  Go see Sonatine or Brother first.

Carnival Of Souls (original version?): I didn't like it, it just bored me.  I thought it was half an hour of material stretched out to feature length, with way too much filler (the predatory slimeball in the motel, for instance).

Dream Life Of Angels: a nice little comedy-drama, but I don't remember anything more specific than that.

I thought it was quite a depressing film, like a gloomier version of Les Apprentis without the humour or the redemptive feelgood ending.

Les diaboliques - great film

Wicker man - cult classic but not known in the mainstream

Witchfinder general best known michael reeves but give the sorcerors a try as well.

grosse Pointe was great.

Black books and father ted are the best comedies to come out of the UK or Ireland in the last twenty years.

Best In Show - funny, but ignored not as good as Spinal tap but definately worth a look.

Seinfeld really funny, great characters but buried in late night TV graveyard same for Larry Saunders.

Gilliganns Island never even shown on television

(the last two only count if you live in the UK)

I have seen the Wraith many times, but whenever I ask anyone else if they've seen it, they look at me like I'm crazy.

I was never a big fan of Big Trouble in Little China, but I have seen it many times. I liked it when I was younger, but I saw it a few months ago and it didn't age well.
