Decent numbers for Fearless, considering it opened on fewer screens than other films. Glad to see that Rock's movie didn't drop too much (at least not as much as Dahlia - ouch). But I don't know if it will make its money back. How much did it cost to make?

Is the Black Dalhia a bad movie? Because I really think what is keeping it from getting an audience is that most of the movie-going public has absolutely no idea on the backstory behind that murder.

It was marketed wrong. It was sold as this serious adaptation of Ellroy's book when it's really an over-the-top psychological thriller that has an uneven story because it's DePalma. Also, the fact it's a fictional story based on a real case pisses some people of.

Well that makes sense in a not kind of way. Inventing closer usually isn't the smartest plan since Hollywood closure kinda ends up having more holes that make it worse.

Depends on the film, really. Remember From Hell. One of those Jack the Ripper flicks - based on a graphic novel - that had closure to it. In reality the facts are waaaaaay off, but it made for good drama.

 

I've read a lot of bad stuff about Dahlia, which sucks because it seems like it would be good. If you're wanting a great flick, which also has Hartnett in the lead, check out Lucky Number Slevin. Did I mention Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley act together in that?

I haven't read the book, though, so I don't know how it holds up.

I read The Black Dahlia in 9th grade, I think, right after having seen L.A. Confidential and loving it. I'm not surprised the movie is uneven and shitty, because the book was uneven and shitty as well. DePalma's certainly not the guy to reign that in, but I think he's become too timid to just explode all the excess and really go over the top a la Scarface.
