Annabelle Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 reminded me of a cheeky counting crows album. words can't say how bored i was with how it sounded. i nearly fell asleep at the wheel. of course, in my near slumber i missed all of the lyrics which apparently are a whole lot more provocative than the music. doubt i'll revisit that bore. ps. i downloaded this because of pitchforks generous praise. when will i learn?
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 I just picked up what was apparently one of very few copies of this in the DC metro area. I loved Separation Sunday, so I have high hopes. Opinions forthcoming.
vivalaultra Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 I really liked Seperation Sunday. Haven't heard the new one. Craig Finn occasionally stumbles upon a genius lyric...occasionally.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I picked this up for 9.99 at Best Buy today. I like it. Not as much as pitchfork did, though.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 Listened to it twice so far. Really like it. Not as varied as Separation Sunday, much more consistently rocking. "Party Pit" is a highlight and there are a handful of moments here that feel really reminiscent of the Replacements' Tim to me, at least in attitude.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I hate this band. Craig Finn is even more irritating in person.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 i don't get indie rock. i'd rather listen to a jet album than most of it.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 banky, listen to Stevie Wonder with me. Np: Innervisions.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 hey, are you gonna be my girl was quite alright with this guy. seriously. why should i lie? i'd rather listen to that song than anything from the hold steady. or any other fashionable indie rock. i don't like pavement, either. quit judging me! don't care for stevie too much. whats wrong with me?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I'm actually shocked you don't like Stevie.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 what can you do? it was on my ipod for a year & never listened. even have fatherinlaws stevie lps. ill give it a go, just for you. because you're going through so much shit in your life. you need to have someone there for you.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 hey this is the one with livin for the city. oh, the best dirtbombs song.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 True story: "Higher Ground," which I'm currently listening to, will forever in my mind be associated with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. How awful.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 hey this is the one with livin for the city. oh, the best dirtbombs song. That one's probably in my top ten list of fave Dirtbombs songs, were I ever to make such a list.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 i'm only on too high which is ok. i think stevie has been anthologized, eulagized, and covered so many times that a lot of his style has been lost on me. of course there are odd songs here and there which still spread my butter. your example of higher ground is very accurate as to why stevie is lost on me. i think i saw alicia keys cover higher ground once. i'd take anything the chili peppers do over that. except stadium arcadium.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 oddly, i have extremely pleasant memories of i just called to say i love you. i can't put ym figner on it, but i positively do love that song.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 Well, that song's terrible. Hell, even his classic era isn't immune from such sap; "Isn't She Lovely" contains both the cheesiest of lyrics and vocal performance by Wonder. The song's redeemed by the music. And in spite of what I said about the Chili Peppers, I still like Stevie's "Higher Ground" very much.
Annabelle Posted October 4, 2006 Author Report Posted October 4, 2006 i can't stand any version of higher ground. its the complete opposite of livin for the city. damn, what a fine song. he did more in 7 mintues than most albums do in 40. wow.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I'm bumpin' that new Decemberists jawn, to swing this back to indie rock.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I downloaded the new Decemberists last night, haven't listened to it yet. Thought about going to see them again at the end of the month, but one $25 student-theater session is probably enough. They are fun live, but I imagine the shtick isn't as endearing the second time around. On Stevie: I dig Songs in the Key of Life. Especially "All Day Sucker."
Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 On The Crane Wife: I like it, but it's arguably their weakest album to date. In fact, ranking their full-lengths in preferential order, it would show I felt that each album was a step-down from the previous, no matter how minor. At this rate, I won't like the next one.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 "Superstition" is one of my favorite songs.
