Guest Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Just curious if the WWF got the Sgt. Slaughter "the wrestler" gimmick from the GI Joe cartoons, or if GI Joe used his character from WWF TV?
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Well, according to this web site http://www.yojoe.com/cartoons/ it said that the GI Joe cartoon started in '82 with a TV commercial and in '83 with a cartoon mini-series. I wasn't into GI Joe so I'm not sure if this is really accurate or not. According to WWE's web site http://superstars.wwe.com/slaughter/bio/ it said Slaughter's career started in the early '80s. I could look for more info off of a Google search, but I'm lazy. If I were to bet money, I'd say the cartoon came first, but what do I know? BTW: Wasn't Slaughter in the GI Joe cartoons at some point?
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Yeah he was, and the cartoon version was almost certainly based on the wrestler, because he looked exactly the same.
Guest caboose Report post Posted June 9, 2002 I saw Slaughter using the Slaughter gimmick in a WWF TV show from 1981, so I think it was just a coincidence that they both came out around the same time.

Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Remember that Slaughter was brought in as a foil for the Iron Shiek right around the time of the hostage crisis, so I'd guess that he's older than G.I. Joe. Of course, it's not like either is really original.
Guest Goodear Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Yeah he was, and the cartoon version was almost certainly based on the wrestler, because he looked exactly the same. Except for the part where the G.I. Joe version was heavily muscled and Slaughter was.... let us be generous and say ... not. The Joes and Slaughter had a nice working relationship going where Slaughter would do introductions for the cartoon every once in a while and wore their logo on his fatigues to the ring a number of times. Guest Report post Posted June 9, 2002 The REAL question is: Which came first: The Chicken or the egg?
Guest Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Oh no, don't get me started on that one...
Guest Steve J. Rogers Report post Posted June 9, 2002 Didn't Remeus (sp) use the Sgt. Slaughter gimmick in AWA? Then I'm guessing if he owns the property he is free to shop it to anyone. (BTW wasn't the Patterson-Slaughter boot camp match at MSG 79?) The GI Joe cartoon (designed of course to revitialize the Joe line with Hasbro) did use famous people including William Perry as part of the line/cartoon so my guess is Sgt. Slaughter came from that and the Joe people came to Robert Remeus and he gave the okay to use the character (assuming he has the rights to the name) One intresting thing though, when LJN made WWF figures they did have to get a Sgt. Slaughter figure made with a Hasbro copyright. BTW another intresting mention of Sgt. Slaughter, there was a bit in a Babylon 5 episode where Cpt. Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) was telling an anecdote from his days as a cadet that his commanding officer was an old grizzled fellow who he and his fellow cadets nicknamed Sgt. Slaughter. Don't know if the script writer was thinking of the wrestler or GI Joe character but the name is pretty much a pop-culture icon for the tough, millitary, George Patton type. Guest Benchman Report post Posted June 10, 2002 Far as I know. the GIJoe character was based on him. He even voiced the character in the cartoon.
