Did anyone notice that Rutgers is second in the computer rankings? If they beat West Virginia, I think there's a very good chance of them going to Glendale.

All this "OMG, Notre Dame could get an at-large berth over a better team" hysteria would be tamped down if people just pretended that Notre Dame is in a conference called "I-A Independents" and they won it.

But, then ND could finish 6-6 and most years would still better Army/Navy/couple random new I-A teams or teams booted out of a conference for sucking like Temple.

 

3. If USC wins out, they're in. They're going to be getting more and more votes each week if they beat Cal and Notre Dame, and ESPN etc., continue sucking off the whole team. Yeah, Florida might make up a little ground with the computers when they beat Arkansas, but it won't be enough to make a difference. An undefeated Rutgers team might be able to jump them if Arkansas and Florida both loses, and they get to #4 in the polls, but it would be a tricky proposition.

Rutgers would have to get to at least get to #3 in the polls, and probably be quite close to #2 USC to pass them. USC is going to be beloved by the computers if they beat Cal and ND.

If this was before the BCS was changed, Rutgers would be in fine shape right now, and would certainly be in the Title game if they won out.

 

But, the computers are only worth 1/3 of the BCS rankings now. The polls still mean a ton more, and the computer rankings alone almost certainly can't raise a team over more than 1 other.

That's true...however, Rutgers will probably be at #5 or 6 if they beat West Virginia and Cincinnati. Either Ohio State or Michigan is guaranteed to lose, and either USC or Notre Dame is guaranteed to lose (plus USC could still lose to Cal and beat Notre Dame). Also, it looks like Arkansas and Florida are meeting in the SEC championship game, which will saddle one of them with a loss.

 

I don't know if that would be enough to get them past Florida (assuming Florida runs the table), but I have to believe it would be pretty close.

Arkansas has to meet LSU the day after Thanksgiving, even if they sew up the SEC West title by beating Mississippi State this week.

 

LSU always plays up for the Arkansas game, such as when a 2-8 Tiger team that just canned Gerry DiNardo whipped a 7-3 Hogs team 35-10 in 1999. Arkansas went on to kick the shit out of Texas in the Cotton Bowl 27-6.

 

 

Arkansas, win or lose, would still go on to meet Florida, who has been looking very vulnerable as of late.

I'm just saying think of them in the same light as someone like Boise State or BYU. If they're good enough that they'd get the bid if they're the Mountain West, WAC, or C-USA champion, then put them in. Don't compare them to a team that's in an auto-bid league, but blew their shot.

Yeah, I meant to say #3 here. The reality that Michigan or Ohio State's going to be down below some one-loss teams after this weekend hasn't quite sunken in yet.
