Guest Karnage Report post Posted June 10, 2002 Obviously bootlegs. The piraters probably transfered the LD version to a DVD-R I'm guessing. There are plenty of other bootlegs on ebay, just search for Star Wars DVD.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted June 11, 2002 That dude got ripped off. He paid double what he could have paid here (go to the DVD section) I got the original trilogy for $29.99. It says 3CD, but they are DVD's. I believe they did transfer from LD to DVD. I'd advise you to at least get the original versions. You can't beat the price ($10 per movie), plus it looks like George won't be putting the original versions out on DVD ever.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted June 11, 2002 Dammit! These aren't bootlegs, they're pirated versions! There's a difference... as a collector of "true" bootlegs, I'm sick of people getting confused by media-perpretrated lies! However, given George Lucas' recent announcement that he will never release the first three Star Wars films in their original forms, it can be argued that the pirated versions of the original forms of these films on DVD are in fact bootlegs. Oh, for reference, a bootleg is an unauthorized release of material that hasn't been commercially released. A pirated release is an unauthorized release that is a copy of material that has been commercially released.
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted June 11, 2002 Has Lucas ever explained why he hates DVD so much, and won't let the Star Wars films be released on that format? That's really dumb, since whether George likes it or not, we're moving from VHS to DVD just like we moved from cassette tapes to CDs. And he's missing out on TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS by not releasing them on DVD too.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted June 11, 2002 It's not so much that he hates DVD, it's that he feels the movies don't represent his proper "vision" (i.e. aren't fully complete). Which is a bit of BS, since he released Ep. 1 on DVD already. He feels the technology that was available back when they were released originally was sub-par, so he needs to go back & fix up stuff and/or add scenes. What is the quality like on the original trilogy SE's they are selling on that site? It says they are widescreen and DD 5.1. Does it look and sound decent? Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 12, 2002 Well i haven't read what Lucas actually said but the way the few poster here worded it doesn't mean he won't release the original 3 movies. The way it was worded here is that he won't release the original VERSIONS of the original 3 movies. So i'm figuring it just means that he only wants to release the updated versions that were used for the rerelease.
Guest Karnage Report post Posted June 12, 2002 Yup, Lucas wants the 1997 Special Editions released after Episode 3. The one with the CGI Jabba and the "who shot first?" scene. I think theres a petition out there for Lucas to release both versions.
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted June 12, 2002 Did anyone feel that the new computer effects in the old movies actually helped them or made them better? All I felt they did was clash with the original effects. Seeing high-dollar CGI in movies from the 70's is just wrong. And none of the new scenes were even any good, as we got a pointless extra Jabba scene, Greedo shooting first, fake-looking Cloud City exteriors, a really lame musical number, so forth and so on. The ONLY one that was made better was when Han was running after those stormtroopers on the Death Star and screaming his head off, and he suddenly runs into a giant room filled with hundreds of baddies. That was good. The rest was shit. The original versions were much better.

Does it look and sound decent? I got both the original & SE. I haven't watched the SE yet. My brother watched the originals & I peeked in a few times to check it out, and from what I can see, the picture & sound both look fine. It is widescreen. Sorry I can't be of any more help right now. Guest swan Report post Posted June 12, 2002 hope this doesnt sound super retarded, but the DVDs worked on a regular DVD player right? If your player plays DVD-R it will. Check the owners manual for all formats it plays. Or do a quick internet search w/ your brand and model number.
