one day I will buy the criterion dvd of this movie, but it's really fucking expensive so I will wait.

I enjoyed Rushmore very much, although not in a laugh-out-loud at all the punchlines funny kind of way (in fact, a lot of the jokes, like the "O R they?" one you mentioned, really didn't do it for me at all... perhaps they were intentionally bad to reflect Max's character?).  It's one of those movies where it's difficult to put my finger on exactly why I liked it, but it was... charming.

 

It's also another Criterion disc I need to pick up, along with The Seventh Seal, Gimme Shelter and Chasing Amy.  Actually, if Criterion discs weren't so expensive I'd pick up the ones I know more often (because they really are top of the line discs), and if they weren't so difficult to come by I'd rent the ones I'd never heard of more often and become (gasp!) cultured, or at least a more "credible" film critic/student by lowering the number of CIHNS.

Rushmore is a great film, one of the best in recent years. The tone of the film is out of step with the tedious cynical/ironic formula too many films have taken over the past decade or so (some US independent films being the worst examples) and the film is engaging without resorting to elaborate but empty gestures. Wes Anderson's films are worth watching a few times simply to catch the small nuances in the script which relate to the story, often a crucially revealing line is tossed aside in the blink of an eye in a subtle manner to avoid the banality of a contrived melodramatic scene. Bottle Rocket, Anderson's first film, is equally good as well and another of my favourites from recent years.

i loved rushmore mainly because of bill murray's performance.  i thought it was one of is best roles ever, because he didn't go too over the top playing his charactor.  a scene i like is when murray is at his son's birthday party and be walk up onto the diving board and does a huge cannonball with a cigarette in his mouth.

I loved Rushmore. I thought the script was layered and nuanced, the performances were all perfectly pitched and the direction was phenomenal. I haven't seen Bottle Rocket, but everything else I've seen from Wes Anderson so far has really impressed me, and I hope he can keep up this high standard.

I watched Rushmore yesterday. I don't really laugh at the movie, but I think it's really good. The only part I found pretty funny is when Murray runs over the kids bike and then chains it back up.
