Rebooking WCW in the end…

WCW Souled Out ’01

To earn a Cruiserweight title shot, Shane Helms got the pinfall in an 8-man tag match pitting himself, Shannon Moore, Evan Karagias, and Jaime Knoble against Kaz Hayashi, Jimmy Yang, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and Elix Skipper.  Whoever got the pinfall in the match won a title shot.  If Chavo had gotten the pin, he wouldn’t have had to defend the title.  Chavo then gave Helms three consecutive brainbusters after the match to injure his neck before the pay per view match.

Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero pinned Shane Helms in 15:30.  Chavo pulled out all the stops against his top contender, but nothing could hold Helms down.  Finally, Helms was preparing for a move on the top rope, but Chavo knocked into the ropes, causing Helms to lose his balance.  Helms crotched himself on the top rope, backwards.  Chavo powerbombed him off the turnbuckle right onto his neck, and cheated to win, putting both feet on the middle rope for leverage in the pin.

The Jung Dragons (Kaz Hayashi & Jimmy Yang) beat Evan Karagias & Jaime Knoble in 13:48, when Kaz pinned Karagias.  This was a great, fast paced tag team bout that had the crowd on the edge of their seats with some eye-popping spots.  Kaz and Yang used a double team implant DDT on Karagias for the win.

Over the past month, Terry Funk has been warning Crowbar not to take so many risks or he’ll end up in a wheelchair by the time he’s retired.  Crowbar doesn’t take heed to these warnings and continues doing insane stunts during his matches.  Funk warns him again, and Crowbar says he doesn’t need Funk’s advice about his life, because he doesn’t want to end up like Funk:  an old, broken down man who doesn’t know when to retire.

Hardcore Champion Terry Funk pinned Crowbar in 8:52.  This was an emotional, wild brawl.  Crowbar tried a moonsault from the top rope to the outside through two tables, but Funk moved.  Funk checked on Crowbar to make sure he wasn’t hurt badly.  He got a worried look on his face and called down for a stretcher.  Once the doctors got to the ring, he rolled Crowbar back into the ring and gave him three consecutive piledrivers for the win.  He got on the mic and said “Now you can wheel that disrespectful little son of a bitch out of here”.  The crowd popped huge for Funk’s mean streak at the end of the match.

At a recent Monday Nitro, Rey Misterio Jr. had pulled what was considered a big upset over Mike Awesome, who had been on a considerable hot streak.  Billy Kidman made the save as Awesome and Lance Storm attacked Rey after the match.  Storm told Awesome that he was sick of young little upstart punks getting cheap wins.  They decided to team up against Rey Jr. and Kidman at Souled Out.

Lance Storm & Mike Awesome beat Rey Misterio Jr. & Billy Kidman in 14:12. Rey played Ricky Morton throughout the match and took a huge beating.  In the end, Kidman hit the Shooting Star Press on Storm, but turned around to be met by an enormous Awesome Bomb.  Awesome was the legal man in the ring, so he covered Kidman for the easy three count.  Storm put Kidman in the Straight Shooter (half Boston crab) after the match until jobbers from the back made the save.

Mark Jindrak and Sean O’Haire complained about the younger guys being held down behind the veterans like DDP and Kevin Nash.  So, Page and Nash offered them a tag title opportunity at Souled Out.  It’s as simple as that.

Mark Jindrak & Sean O’Haire beat Tag Team Champions Diamond Dallas Page & Kevin Nash in 7:41 to win the titles.  This was a pretty even match throughout.  Jindrak hit a running powerslam on Nash, and then O’Haire nailed the Seanton bomb for the win and the titles.  After the match, it looked as if DDP and Nash were going to nail the rookies with the tag title belts, but instead just handed them the belts and raised their hands in a show of respect.  Huge pop.

Shane Douglas got on the mic during Thunder and did his usual thing where he complains that the torch was supposed to be passed to him, but never was.  US Champion Hugh Morrus came out and told Douglas to quit his bitching.  He said in the sport of wrestling, you have to earn your way to the top.  He mentioned that the US title had been held by such legends as Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper, Dusty Rhodes, and the late Rick Rude.  He said that the US title is full of tradition and respect, and if Douglas wants to be on top, he’ll have to earn it by beating Morrus at Souled Out.

Shane Douglas pinned US Champion Hugh Morrus in 11:49 to win the title.  This was pretty much a normal, solid match throughout.  Douglas gets the win when he crotches Hugh on the top rope during a No Laughing Matter attempt.  He turns Hugh around and hits a top rope belly-to-belly suplex for the win and the title.

There isn’t much of a story behind Bill Goldberg vs. Buff Bagwell.  Goldberg beat Bagwell’s partner Lex Luger at Starrcade last month, so now Bagwell is giving it a shot.  He and Lex attacked Goldberg from behind on the Nitro before this, injuring his leg. Good luck, Marcus.

Bill Goldberg pinned Buff Bagwell in 4:49.  Luger tried to interfere, but that didn’t help.  Goldberg’s leg gave out on a Jackhammer attempt and Buff got a two count.  Goldberg makes the comeback.  Spear.  Jackhammer.  Goodnight, Buffy.

Konnan was doing his normal spiel before a match on Nitro, and Jeff Jarrett came out and confronted him.  He made fun of his gangster image and his Mexican heritage.  Konnan got pissed and tried to attack Jarrett, but Jarrett smashed a guitar over his head.  Konnan said no one makes of him or his heritage, and he challenged Jarrett to a loser leaves WCW match at Souled Out.

Sid came out the night after Starrcade and complained about the match being marred by interference.  He wants Scott in a match where everyone else is barred from ringside.  No disqualifications, and no countouts.  Anyone who tries to interfere will be fired on the spot.  Scott agrees, saying he’s got nothing to worry about.  He’s beaten Sid before, and he’ll do it again.

World Champion Scott Steiner pinned Sid Vicious in 12:49.  It’s Steiner vs. Sid, what did you expect? A **** classic?  Far from it.  It was more entertaining than the Starrcade bout, however.  Both men cut decent bladejobs.  Steiner wins clean with his suplex into a sit down tombstone move on a chair.

If the demand is right, I'll continue with an entertaining Superbrawl I have put together... maybe I'll keep going and WCW won't die :)
