ECW History

Recommended Posts

Guest Daredevil21

Hey I know that there are some people on this board who are/were ECW loyalists and know everything about it. Well, if you are one of those people and are reading this, I'd appreciate a brief yet discriptive history of ECW. It's my project that I'm doing where I want to describe the demise of WCW, AWA and ECW and I'm a little fuzzy on ECW's history, like ownership and improtant dates like first PPV and such. So if one of you guys could hook a white brotha up here, I'd be most grateful. Thanks.

Ok...some of my details may be a little off...if so someone feel free to correct me.

ECW kina started out as Joel Goodhart's TWA in 1992...Tod Gordon backed a few of his shows ($$$...Tod owns busniesses and is kind of well off)

Goodhart stopped running shows and some of the boys who worked there (JT Smith and a few others) asked Tod to pick it up and kind of start over with it.

So Tod started up NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling with Eddie Gilbert as head booker.

The early days of ECW brought in some of the older talent who's best days were past them but still had name power: Jimmy Snuka (First ever ECW Champion...won a tournament, but lost the title one night later to Johny Hotbody), Don Muracco, Abdullah the Butcher, Kevin Sullivan, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, and Terry Funk.

REMEMBER: I don't know how much of this is 100% right

Around April of 1993 they got tv...they were the only NWA affiliate at the time with a tv show. I don't know if Joey Styles was part of the broadcast team at first...but in the beginning Terry Funk was.

Tod Gordon hated the shit out of Dennis Carlouzzo (I know I killed the spelling)...Dennis was the man running what was left of the NWA and he tried to sabatoge some of ECW's shows by getting them canceled (I got a lot of this from the Gordon shoot interview)

Shane Douglas won a tournament to fill the vacancy for the NWA world title...in a scripted move Douglas threw down the title and declared himself the Extreme Championship Wrestling champion.

Dennis cut a promo saying action was going to be taken against Douglas and such...but then in an honest to God swerve Tod Gordon cut an interview after everyone left that night saying ECW was no longer part of the NWA...that was payback on Dennis.

On August 27, 1994 NWA Eastern Championship Wreslting was renamed Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Paul E, who was a manager, was eventually moved up to booker...Eddie Gilbert was done with ECW, Tod said he had just gotten too paranoid thinking everyone was against him and that he was too hard to work with.

Tod always wanted to give Paul E raises...but Paul refused and said not untill they made more money...after ECW started doing better Tod gave Paul E half the company as a raise.

Eventually Paul E took over 100% ownership of ECW...Tod stayed around though, he still booked and worked with Paul E.

ECW's first ever pay per view was Barely Legal and it was held on April 13, 1997 at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA...it drew a 0.3 buyrate. The show ended about 30 seconds or so before their generator blew up...that would have killed the live feed...they got off just in time.

on August 14, 1999 ECW taped it's first show for TNN (I was there brotha!)...however they never aired the show, and instead used a taping from Queens, NY they did later in the month.

ECW on TNN was the highest rated show on the station...drawing an average of a 1.0 in the rating. But conflicts between Paul E and TNN led the to shows end, the last ECW on TNN was in Nov of 2000 I believe.

After ECW went national the workers were paid more...and with that and other debts mounting ECW was in trouble.

Some of the Workers like Tommy Dreamer, Rob Van Dam, Shane Douglas, and Francine were owed tons of back pay. Douglas I believe was the highest at around $150,000.

ECW's final show was a house show on 1/13/01 in Pine Bluff, AR...the show ended with Sandman pinning Justin Credible...after the match all thw workers came to the ring, drank beer, and said their goodbyes in case they never came back again.

ECW ran 21 pay per views from 1997-2001.

Most of the info here I stuff I've read, Heard on Shoot interviews, or just got out of my almanac.

Like I said, a lot of this is fact...but if I'm not right on anything feel free to correct me.

There is tons more to say...I typed most of what I figured to be important info.

Rock on

Guilty as Charged was January 7, 2001 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Newyork, NY. The Sandman won the title by beating Steve Corino and Justin Credible, before losing it to Rhino in exactly 1 min.
