2 charged with creating panic in Boston

Recommended Posts

Talk about overreaction. Apparently these devices looked so much like bombs that they shut down the entire city of Boston yesterday after they were found in various locations throughout the city. The two who placed the devices are being charged with attempting to cause a panic and the mayor is talking about prison sentences of > 20 years. Oddly enough the same thing was done in various cities in that past couple weeks and none of those cities went crazy with fears of terrorism. I know we're living in a different world after 9-11, but let's not get carried away.

From the article I posted above:

"Emergency deployment teams were sent into the center of the city immediately upon these reports. There were significant shutdowns of not only highways, but rail traffic with the MBTA," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said. "Several of the devices do have common characteristics, but it is too early to say how many are connected."
Storrow Drive eastbound was shut down for a brief time, and the MBTA suspended service on the Red Line and planned to bus afternoon commuters between Kendall and Park Street stations.

"Anytime you get a report of a suspicious device, it is always a concern," U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Scott Carr said. "We went ahead and shut down the waterways so we could clear the area and keep everybody safe."

"Our device was not an active device. We are still treating the area as a crime scene. There were no injuries. Everyone was evacuated properly, and everyone now back to their locations," Tufts New England Medical Center's Brooke Hynes said.

As I understand it, they did have permits to put those things up, and they've been up for WEEKS, including in other cities.

This story mad my birthday. CNN was hyping the story all day long when I was trying to study at the Coffee Shop at school. I figured it was nothing but they have to be on the safe side. Then I find out it was ATHF. Stupid fucking Massholes.

The real fun of this all is that the same company owns both CNN and the Cartoon Network! Indirectly, the people reporting the story were the same ones creating it!

The administration is probably already drafting a plan to invade the Moon and stop these terrorist Moonites.

But the US Army is clearly not ready for the awesome power of the QuadLaser!

I don't watch Adult Swim, so can somebody explain all this faggotry to me? UseTheSledgehammerUh is right, though. I'm a total loser, and even I can't handle the concentrated dorkiness of Adult Swim.

Yeah, I read the article. I also chatted with people who didn't even notice that something was going on until the 6 o'clock news came on.

If the T isn't breaking down, or if I-93 isn't shut down b/c of flooding in the tunnel, or if some other ridiculous malady isn't plaguing transporation, it's not a day in Boston. Saying the city shut down is a gross exaggeration.

I think anything the administration can do to wipe out Massachusetts liberals would be welcome in their eyes. George Bush is probably already conspiring with the Mooninites like he did with Al-Qaeda.

A show called Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which consists of twelve minute shorts where a milkshake, fries and a meatball fight crime, but usually just sit around the house all day. One episode featured the invasion of the "mooninites", obnoxious alien creatures straight out of an Atari game.

Okay. So am I to assume that a cadre of computer science majors with unfortunate facial hair thought it would be hysterical to put these things all over Boston?

Negative. The two guys responsible for doing it claim it was "art." But Turner Broadcasting came forward and said they were responsible for it as a marketing scheme. They then told reporters they would only answer questions about 1970s hairstyles.

I think I liked Cartoon Network better when they just showed Looney Tunes and Space Ghost. Me, I like the classics. (And Space Ghost.)

Yeah we had a couple of these in Portland as well. From my friend's myspace:

It's cute, I don't see how anyone could really give a shit. Like someone earlier said, they just look like Lite Brights. I guess we're more used to odd things here, though.

Why the BPD gave a shit:

It wasn’t the blinking “Mooninites” that had the Boston Police Department running at Code Red Wednesday.

Quite the contrary, what kept the cops on edge for a few hours were the two packages that didn’t blink . . . the ones that looked just like pipe bombs, rather than SpongeBob SquarePants.

According to Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis, the phony pipe bomb discovered inside Tufts-New England Medical Center at 1 p.m. Wednesday was accompanied by a security guard’s description of “an agitated white male” fleeing the hospital saying, “God is warning you that today is going to be a sad day.”

As fate would have it, this no-nonsense bomb call surfaced in the middle of a coordinated hoax. And it was immediately followed by another call for a “pipe bomb” device tucked under the Longfellow and BU bridges.

In other words, the police weren’t quite as punk’d as all those “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” hipsters out there in the blogosphere would lead you to believe. It wasn’t those LEDs tacked onto all those circuit boards that police worried about, as much that guy with no light on upstairs, running away from what looked a helluva lot like a pipe bomb.

“Had we simply found these cartoon characters stuck here and there,” Davis said yesterday, “I can assure you this thing would have been tamped down in pretty short order. But what troubled us was the discovery of those other two devices that looked very real indeed. And it wasn’t until the people from Turner took responsibility for what they had done, that we could think about the coincidence of what had taken place.”

I stopped when the article said it was 'Spongebob Squarepants'. Yeah, they really got the whole story on this one. It's those other cities that didn't freak out all retarded like that had it wrong...Boston had it right with the Spongebob Pipebomb.

I dont get the whole 'defend your city!' thing. When anyplace in Wisco fucks up I'm going along with the jokes.

Thank you for admitting that you didn't read the point that explains why the BPD reacted the way it did.

It's not about defending your city, it's about defending the people that work to protect it.

And we know that people in Wisconsin go along with their jokes- that's why Favre is coming back.

That's like something you'd hear on Fox News.

Dang hipster internets out there.

OH, SNAP!

Sorry that Wisconsin doesn't eat its own when it comes to sports stars. Now when it comes to Milwaukee-area homosexuals, yes, Wisconsin has been known to eat its own, but at least they're not so damn fickle about sports. Favre earned the right to keep his job as long as he wants it, and they have a better chance to make the playoffs with him than without.

Yeah, they should just ignore the 1:1 TD:INT ratio. Brett Favre can cure heartburn for nine straight days, so slap some cheddar on your dome and go team!

And fuck the haters. The facts remain, and the Herald is gold.

Would you want to be the one who has to break the news that Favre has been relieved of his duties?

Entirely too much is made out of the fact he's thrown a lot of picks in his career. It's not like he doesn't make up for them later. Although, the Packers record does tend to closely go along with how many TD's to INT's he has. In Green Bay's two 8-8 seasons he had a 1:1 ratio. When he has no running game, he has to do more than normal. Just the way it is.
