Some more Blockbuster Stupidity

Recommended Posts

Guest MarvinisaLunatic

Blockbuster wants you to rewind your DVDs..

I never really paid any attention to this, but it makes good sense.  I also see them on Game rentals, even N64 cartridges come to think of it. For DVDs They should probably say Be Kind, Don't scratch the disc, since every DVD Ive gotten thats been in rental circulation for more than a week is scratched up.  Its ashame, cause its either blockbuster or this mom and pop place that doesnt even know what DVD is, and still has BETAMAX for rent.

I went to Blockbuster today.  Their DVD section is laughable.  Someone should start a chain that only carries DVDs.  I think they would bring in pretty good money.

my blockbuster is great, they have a shitload of dvd's and they sell their overstocked pre-watched ones with no scratches.  And if their are scratches you return it and get something else.  I have no quarells with blockbuster at this time.

Mine has a pretty good selection, so much that they phased out most of the Special Interest VHS - the Wrestling Tapes, UFC tapes, Sports tapes and the ever popular babes in bikinis with no nudity tapes.  Sadly i missed the used tape sale on the wrestling tapes, they had a lot of good stuff.  Now i hear that they are gonna start phasing out a bunch of the crappier movies that never get rented.

Here I come Beach Babes from Beyond!

the local Blockbuster I visit recks of bad management, all of the Anime is scatter among the Sci-fi videos, the wrestling vids are always behind the wrong displays; example Slamboree would be behind Wrestlemania 9.  An then all of the Martial Arts vids are in random arragement in the Action section.

Now the only reason I go there is to buy the used tapes or games.  I currently have most of WCW 99 tapes, at $3 a piece.

Hey... save some of those for me!

Seriously though, regarding renting DVDs, there are both Blockbusters and Hollywoods around here, and neither of them have a good DVD selection.  Yet, just 20 minutes away, in San Francisco, the Blockbusters have such a great selection... hell, they have Mimic 2! I didn't even know that movie was out on DVD! Unfortunately, I can't get there easily and don't rent from Blockbuster because they censor stuff (or used to anyway) and they screwed us once on a late rental fee thing.  What I hate about renting DVDs though, when I do find something I want, it's usually scratched, and my DVD player is very picky about that kind of stuff.  One time I rented the classic The Seventh Seal, and it was so scratched it skipped several minutes of film several times throughout the course of the disc.  I probably missed about 10 minutes of footage from all the skipping and restarting, which is a shame because its a really great film.

Blockbuster fucking sucks.

If you support them, then you support full frame only DVD, editing "offensive" content from films and not being told about it, the banning of NC-17 and Unrated films and digital product placement of Blockbuster logos in films that didn't have them originally.

Yeah, they really rock. Fuck that.

Unfortunately, there's not much competition.  Hollywood Video's library is often better for classics, but not nearly as much as for obscure modern movies, like little-known slasher flicks and stuff.  About the only alternative is if you're lucky enough to have a decent mom & pop store near you.

Oh yeah, and the more I check around, the more it seems like ALL Blockbusters sold ALL of their wrestling videos, and don't even seem to be buying new ones.

fwiw, the competition in Canada is Blockbuster, Rogers Video and sometimes Jumbo Video.

Most of the Blockbusters that I've gone to (in Toronto and Windsor) have had a pretty good selection of DVDs - rarely full frame - and even have some HK cinema that isn't dubbed!!

Rogers is actually a lot better.  Firstly, they have 2, 5 and 7 NIGHT rentals, which is huge for a new release DVD (you can actually watch some of the special features etc).  Secondly, they have a great selection of videos - they carry stuff like Sopranos, Oz, wrestling, anime AND baby blues (ok, "great" is a relative term).  And finally, when you sign up for their online newsletter, you get coupons every 2 weeks for free or 2-for-1 rentals.  Can't argue with that.

Jumbo Video hasn't really been in my area for a while, but they've got free popcorn.

Another place I'd recommend checking out is Microplay.  Depending on the owner, they may rent out DVDs for PS2 and X-Bucks...

You mean someone other than me has heard of/seen this classic piece of film!

Hot girls, silly plot, and more psuedo-celebs than you can shake a stick at...why wasn't THIS nominated for an Academy Award?

But Jumbo, Rogers, and Microplay aren't around down here.  The only chains are Blockbuster (ugh), Hollywood (competent, but not quite... enough), and Movie Gallery (low-rent crap).

Odd, I thought that Microplay was an American chain...

...and that means that it sucks for me, since I'm moving down to Houston.

...So, is NetFlix any good?

I have never had any problems with a Canadian Blockbuster.  I have been to Blockbusters in the US, and they DO suck, but up here they are almost entirely DVD and widescreen.  Even a large number of their VHS tapes are widescreen.  We also have unrated tapes and the Canadian equivalent of NC-17.

Yeah and Blockbuster's previously viewed DVDs up here in Canada are really cheap.

You can't go wrong with some DVDs going as low as 9.99.

I made it a personal goal never to rent anything from Blockbuster again, especially after the $15.00 LATE FEE I owed them for Sorority House Massacre 2, NBA 2K2, and Madden 2002, which were *at the most* a couple hours late if at all.  Not like they're short on money or anything, what with their UNGODLY prices now.

*Other Blockbuster Musings"

My old VCR ate their copy of "Dawn of the Dead" before I could bootleg it, and I've always kicked myself for that... until my friend bought on DVD and let me tape it.  If only they would rerelease it with commentary and everything.

Mine actually has a good wrestling video collection, most all of which are in my collection (wink, wink).

Speaking of Mom N' Pop stores, this Flick Video in Lenoir (about 45 minutes) from where I live, had some KICK-ASS wrestling videos that I hadn't seen at any other video store:  WrestleWar '92, Canadian Stampede, and a few others.  Anyway, about a year I said I got to rent some of these and tape 'em.  Well anyway, I returned the other day and to my horror the once ten-foot tall shelf of classic wrestling videos had been reduced to nothingness.  About December they sold all the old ones.  The only remnants were Starrcade '96, a DDP video, Paul Bearer's Hits from the Crypt and some other turdburgers.%

I've never had a problem with Blockbuster here in Canada. Good variety of movies/DVD and tons of games.

Did you ever see the sequel?  It was stupid, but had elements of another of my favorite cheesy skinemax flicks - Dinosaur Island, which wasnt half bad.

Ok.  I just rented Black Hawk Down from Blockbuster, and it definitely does not say to rewind it.

Up here the tapes are due back when the store closes.  What prices do you have to pay?  We can get any DVD for $3.99 Canadian, for either 2 days, 5 days or 7 days depending on how old it is.  We also get our games for a week if they are more than 4 months old.

Well, technically Rogers Video wants the movies back at 6pm but they're pretty good with giving a grace period to customers.

Sorry.  I was referring to Blockbuster.  I probably should have made it more clear.

No! DVDs must be stopped!!!!! Sorry folks, but I really don't want to make the change from VHS to DVD. I've got too much shit on VHS.

So to all of you who get scratched discs, I give a hearty laugh. Our Blockbuster has too many of these damn discs. They've infested 40% of the store.

I think the point of the Rewind issue is that A)Some stores dont want to pay for new ways to id DVDs and B)There are some stores run by idiots who think you can rewind a DVD.

Hah, too bad dude. DVD is already more popular than VHS, and besides, VHS sucks ass.

You better make the switch and get rid of the VHS while you can still get $1.00 for each of them.

VHS does not suck. There's lots of cool WWF Coliseum Videos and WCW Turner Home Entertainment or Warner Bros. videos I get from yard sales and ebay. I got WWF Invasion of the Bodyslammers for 2 bucks at a yard sale. You are the one who sucks. I won't buy DVDs unless WWF puts out classic WWF DVDs. The only wrestling DVDs I'll buy for now are the Wrestling Gold DVDs because they've got classic wrestling footage from the 1970s, 1980s and Smoky Mountain Wrestling. I'll buy Stone Cold: What? and NWO:Back in Black because they have classic WCW matches.

Whatever happened to Coliseum Video btw?

If they were still here today, their DVDs would be loaded. I think the only WWE Home Video DVD which actually had features was Mick Foley's Hard Knocks, Cheap Pops.

I think Coliseum Video went out of business and then WWF began releasing their own home videos.

Between the two main chains Hollywood has a better selection usually.

Blockbuster's and Hollywood's dvd selection does vary from store to store and area to area. All mine around me(Ohio) have a decent to good selection. I don't go to Blockbuster when i have a choice, but the only problem is that a blockbuster closest to my house. A Hollywood isn't too far away but usually i don't want to go out of my way. I wish there was a mom and pops place close to me. I hate renting from my Blockbuster and usaully won't now because most the previewed DVDs go on sale a month or so after they are releashed. I'd rather BUY a used but guaranteed DVD for 12 or so then RENT it for 5 fucking dollars.

I got Black Hawk Down from my illegal guy for $15 brand new. Too bad he only gets current, mainstream stuff.
