BBC Comedies

Recommended Posts

Any reccomendations? I recently watched through all of Coupling, which was incredible, and the Office.

Some of the slapsticky stuff, I'm not too fond of (Like Young Ones, or Ab Fab, I know. They're pretty old.)

But I love all the old classics like Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and Flying Circus, so I was wondering what some more recent shows worth checking out would be.

The Office

Extras

Anything with 'Alan Partridge' - Steve Coogan

Brass Eye - satire stuff (not BBC) - unsure of availability, check youtube

Phoenix Nights (not BBC)

Peep Show (not BBC)

Can't beat classic Mr Bean, although pretty much unavailable (on youtube though)

Coupling is pretty average so you'll probably like Peep Show which is the same in terms of character casting but a lot better and more original. Phoenix Nights has a lot of references that you might not get.

Have you ever watched Only Fools and Horses? (Not sure if it was an ITV or BBC show but I presume it is all the same to you) everybody should.

Everything I have ever seen of The Two Ronnies is very good.

Edit: Oh you just mean recent shows, nevermind.

Don't know about availability but I'd recommend:

15 Stories High

The Day Today

Look Around You

The Mighty Boosh

Red Dwarf

Snuffbox

That Mitchell and Webb Look

You can, however, find clips/shows from all of these on YouTube.

Yeah, I don't actually mean only BBC stuff. Just funny British comedy.

In that case I'd also recommend:

Black Books

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Man to Man with Dean Learner

Nathan Barley

Spaced

Again, clips/show are available on YouTube.

My favorites are:

-Spaced

-The Office

-Black Books

-Father Ted

You can find complete episodes of some of them on DailyMotion.com if you want to go ahead and check some out. If you buy Spaced, be sure to get the special 3-disc set with the long documentary on it.

I'll also pimp Black Books and Father Ted and add Gimme Gimme Gimme.

I also loved Coupling if that gives any weight to my recommendations.

Also anything with Chris Morris such as The Day Today or Brass Eye, although maybe not to your taste.

I think Fawlty Towers is really the best place to start if you are new to British TV Comedy.

My favorites from the last 10 years:

The Office

Phoenix Nights

Peep Show

Brass Eye

The Day Today

Second tier is:

Extras

I'm Alan Partridge

Knowing me, Knowing You

The League of Gentlemen

15 Storeys High

Give The Royal Family a spin.

Truly the funniest portrayal of extreme laziness that man has ever created.

(Or female, this was all written by a chick!)

I'll echo the love for Black Books.

The commentaries on the DVD are great as well. Dylan Moran just doesn't care.

I always liked Not the Nine O'Clock News as well, if you're into sketch comedy.
