First if you like the movie, im not condemning you. (obvioulsy it may just be a taste thing).

secondly SPOILERS!!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!

THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF (IF NOT THE) WORST MOVIES IVE EVER SEEN..

I like ambiguous movies, where everything isnt spelled out for you, but this was not that. its all over the place..no inkling of whats going on, plot elements are just dropped (time travel).

are they just plain harbingers for tragedy? why would geres wife see them? one person is not a tragedy! and dont people see it as a warning? she already had the rare tumor. and speaking of the wife? she didnt die? shes calling? shes ingrid cold? Nice help the prophecy expert was too. Based on a true story? please! plllllllllllllllease!!!! Gere showed up at "gordon's" door twice before he realy did? while he was still in washington?

"whats in my hand?"

"chhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaap stiick"

me last night:

"whats in my dvd player?"

"crrrrrrrrrappppppppppppp  awfffulll crrrrrrappppp"

Never watched the movie, and never intend to.  My rule is to avoid movies starring the following:

- Julia Roberts

- Richard Gere

- Freddie Prinze, Jr.

- Any Baldwin save for Alec (he pulls out a good one every so often)

- Robin Williams (although Insomnia will probably be the exception here)

And out of a lingering bitterness, I also avoid movies directed by Joel "the Franchise Killer" Schumacher.

The movie's "true story" was based on a series of strange creature sightings in the 60's.  This thing, which was described as being about six feet tall, gray colored, with red eyes and wings, was seen by a number of different people over the same area in the period of a few months.  The press dubbed him "Mothman".  However, that's all there was to the story, the movie completely made up the rest of it.

I, personally, loved this movie. Only movie with Gere in it that I've been able to stand.

It's a true mainstream mindfuck, but it ends up making sense. That's what most people don't get...

SPOILERS~!~

Okay, Ingrid's a being from another world...the scientist that Gere went to see in NYC made a good analogy that pretty much explains how Ingrid knew these things were going to happen. Something along the lines of "from the cockroach's perspective, they can't see the foot coming down from above to crush them. See that window washer up there? He's probably not the smartest guy in the world. But he can see farther than we can from here in the parking lot."

Just think about that, and all of Ingrid's reasoning makes sense.

Only part I didn't actually get was how Gere's character was able to visit the house several times...

Robin Williams is a good actor.  You should only avoid his comedies.

C'mon this guy is comedic genius.

What is so bad about Julia?

Most people hate Julia because she is successful.

As for Mothman Prophecies, I loved it. It's one of my favourite movies of 2002 so far. The movie looks amazing and the ending kicks ass.

To be perfectly honest, I'd say that it's the other way around - avoid his dramas.

I actually just hate her because I think she's a bad actress.

i think she's overrated personally and she's related to Eric, not her fault but i still dock her points for that...

Bah.  Mothman Propecies ruled, as it was kinda like one of those pointless X-Files episodes that had Mulder/Scully hunting down the evil monster.  I don't like Gere either, but I think he played the part well.  And the bridge scene is pretty cool.

yeah i get what they were, but why were they doing it?

I just dont think the makers intended it to be ambiguous..they really had no clue. If they focused on one or two elements then fine but as it is heres the dangling threads:

what the moth is

why they do what they do

what is the deal with time travel

what is the deal with richard gere's face being deifferent in the mirror

why can they use only phone lines, letterhead and envelopes, and plumbing.

whats the deal with his wife

why is richard gere "sent to them"

the false insistence on a tue story

like i said in my original post..theyre harbingers for diaster......i get that. any ideas on the rest of those problems?

Have you ever seen "Manos: Hands of Fate" or "The Hunt"? These are the worst movies ever made. "Manos: Hands of Fate" was officially voted the worst movie of all time.

Robin Williams is a great comedic actor, just the comedies he is in, especially the more recent ones are horrible.  He needs to get better at picking out scripts.

Stir of Echoes? You can't be serious. You think that's one of the worst films you have ever seen?

PLEASE explain how you can say that is a horrible movie. It's one of the best modern ghost films made in the last decade.

The acting is just abhorable in stir of echoes. IMO

OMG~! Super bump...

I just saw the movie on HBO. I don't think the idea was to have Ingrid from another planet... I think the movie wanted to display that Ingrid was 'fate'. When I see this movie, it reminds me of Final Destination except it's MUCH MUCH better and instead of 'signs' happening to tell what will happen the Mothman did. Plus, it's somewhat of a true story.

EDIT: Also I thought it was a SWANK movie.

There is actuallt a good bit more to the story Jingu$. There have been reported sighting of "The Mothman" for years right before a big disaster hits. I found a site about it a while back, pretty interesting.

I also thought the movie was really good.

Damn, everything about that film ruled, especially the acting. One of Bacon's best performances.

As for Mothman, I loved it. Great atmosphere and cinematography. It also has one of the best endings I've seen in a while.

I saw it. I returned it to Blockbuster. I moved on.

I live in Point Pleasant, West Virginia and I find it really funny to hear all of these stories and things. The people who have claimed to have seen the Mothman were alcoholics or crazy. I know a guy who says that he killed the Mothman and buried him in his backyard. Everyone in town knows the guy too, and whenever you hear stories somebody always talks about him.

There are alot of legends. Gere's character is based on a reporter who investigated and claimed to get the messages that Gere's character recieved.

I don't put much stock in it, but there's alot of shit swirling in that porcelain pot of legend.

I thought Mothman ruled. I'm thinking of getting the SE DVD later this month. It helps if you've heard the real stories and the real guy talking about it on Art Bell for years.

Stir of Echoes was good. Now Hollow Man, there's a movie with a great concept ruined by terrible acting and dialogue.

I liked Mothman. Good craftsmanship all around, though it never quite reached it's full potential in my mind atleast.

As for Stir of Echoes, it's been a while since I saw it, but I remember thinking it was very good, especially due to Kevin Bacon's performance, and overall good to very good craftsmanship.

I thought it was a good movie, something akin to an episode of the X Files, but I can see how some people would be turned off to the movie.

And who is it that posted further up and now has no member name or anything..wierd.
