Frank Zappa

Recommended Posts

By removing "Treacherous Cretins", "Ship Ahoy", "Pink Napkins", "Beat It With Your Fist", "Stucco Homes" and "Canard Du Jour", I have condensed the 3-disc Shut Up N Play Your Guitar to a single CD.

To be fair, the 3-CD release was only to mimic the original 35-minute EP releases, but still... most fuckers charge $35-40 for about 1.5 CDs worth of music (though I finagled it for $20 somehow)

Trying to find Frank Zappa CD's (that aren't best of...) are next to impossible to find, unless I want to shell out +30 dollars.

That's strange. Many of them are only $12 in the US. Try ordering directly from Rykodisc.

You can't really go wrong with it, but I'd grab Zoot Allures or You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol 2

So I'm still new to this whole Frank Zappa thing, but I'm really into his long guitar improvisations (e.g. "Yo Mama"). Are there any albums that feature a heavy amount of his exploratory guitar work?

Well, the Shut up and Play.. set is just that; long noodling solos. The most impressive thing about those discs to me is the studio technique of taking random tape of his band and synching it up with tape of his guitar work/studio guitar recording. Guy's as brilliant of a producer as he is a guitarist.

That said, that 3 disc set is incredibly bloated.
