Andre the Giant was a wrestler like no other. His tremedous charisma and wonderful personality made him one of the most popular wrestlers of all time. Andre was born in Grenoble, France in 1946. Andre's parents genes were evidently passed onto him. Both of Roussinoff's parents were over 6 feet tall. Sadly, Andre surpassed their heights dramatically, as he suffered from acromegaly, a disease which disables the height hormones in the body. Andre's family had a legendary height record and Andre's grandfather was claimed to be 7 foot 6 inches tall. Bigger than all the other kids, Andre left home at 14, weighing 200 pounds and standing an amazing 6 foot 3 inches tall. He worked in Paris until he was approached and asked if he wanted to be a wrestler. Little did he known then that he would become the face of wrestling for the next 15 years. Andre wrestled in France and all over Europe and, eventually, all over the world. Hundreds, then thousands, then millions got to know Andre as the most amazing athlete the world had ever seen. Vince McMahon Snr, the owner of the World Wrestling Federation, signed Andre in the early 1980s. Many of Andre's matches weren't classics, but they weren't supposed to be. Andre crushed his opponents with his huge hands and size 22 feet. Although his height and weight was exaggerated, Andre was, without a doubt, the biggest man ever in any sport. His weight varied from his more agile years in which he was a mere 350 pounds, to the very end were he was in the region of 500 pounds. In the WWF, Andre was a overwhelming success. He won matches and battle royals up and down the coutry and defeated the unslammable Big John Studd in the inagural Wrestlemania. Wrestlemania was to be the stage for Andre a few years later, when he faced his biggest rival - Hulk Hogan. By 1987, Andre had alligned himself with the evil but successful manager - Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Andre was the bad guy leading up to the Wrestlemania main-event. Hulk Hogan had the biggest personality, whilst Andre had the biggest body and the biggest heart. The match stole the show, needless to say. 93,000 fans packed the Silverdome Arena not only to see Champion Hulk Hogan, but also to see the big-man - Andre. Their match was not the greatest , but certainly the most memorable. The match ended when Hulk slammed the huge Andre, gave him the leg drop, and pinned him to retain the title. This defeat showed Andre's great heart and love for the business. He allowed Hogan to slam him and pin him, in front of the biggest audience of all time, something that required heart and soul. Andre was in bad health at the time, gaining weight and becoming exhausted far too easily. He slumped into chairs and against walls, after big matches and the toll it took on Andre was all too evident. Andre loved his food, his beer, his wine and his life. He lived life as if there was no tommorow. His massive frame could contain thousands of bottles worth of beer and excessively large amounts of food. Despite his size, Andre never lost his temper or used his weight in public to expressive his mood. Understandably, Andre wanted to be like everyone else. Andre did get to defeat Hogan in 1988, after a strange turn of events. Dave Hebner, Earl's brother, made an illegal count and Andre was deemed the winner and new champion, but Andre immedately sold the belt to the "Million Dollar Man" Ted Di Biase. The title was put on the line at Wrestlemania 4 in  tournament form, a tournament that Andre didn't win. After a period as a tag wrestler, Andre retired from Wrestling, leaving the spotlight on rising stars such as Bret Hart and Randy Savage. The big life, the big meals and the big shows resulted in Andre's health becoming very poor. Tragically, in 1993, Andre died in his sleep, shortly after his father's funeral, aged just 46. Andre didn't live out his dream of having a family, but Andre had made the wrestling world his family, with his unmistakable style, character and heart. Andre was kind, honest and caring and sharing. His life will never be forgotten and hopefully he is in a place amongst the great wrestlers of the past. We miss you, Andre, but your legend will live on forever.
