Guest Report post Posted June 14, 2002 BYTE THIS REPORT: AUSTINMANIA Byte This 6-14-02 Scheduled guests: Edge and Chris Benoit Hosts: Kevin Kelly and Dr. Tom Prichard Show starts with a recap of Austin on Byte This two weeks ago. Kevin reads WWE’s “statement” on Austin which can be found on their website. Kevin and Tom debate what should be next for WWE with Austin. Dr. Tom says WWE should move on. CALLER: Austin shouldn’t have walked out but his character direction has been poor. Kevin puts over Confidential this week and says they will give a “complete” timeline of the events leading up to Austin’s leaving. CALLER: says the current WWE reminds him of the old WCW. CALLER: believes Austin leaving is a work. Kevin claims this is not an angle or a storyline. CALLER: says the level of talent now is very high but that the talent is used poorly. Dr. Tom claims that is an opinion. Tazz joins the show On Austin: surprised and shocked he would do what he did. The fans should be outraged. The business will move on. When Taz, the Dudley’s and Shane Douglas left ECW, the company did not fold right away. A company is not built on one person. Tazz puts over Michael Cole and his behind the scenes work on commentary. On Tough Enough: casting for 3 is going well and the reunion special was good. Tazz puts over Confidential and leaves the show. Kevin claims Confidential will not bury Austin. Edge joins the show On shoulder: the first doctor he went to see told him to have surgery. Dr. Andrews told him to wait and rehab but surgery will be needed in time. He is currently rehabbing six days a week. On injury advice: Taker told him Dr. Andrews was not a “surgery guy.” He was excited to hear rehab might work. On Rhyno: Went boating with him yesterday and Rhyno has his neck brace off and is doing well. On Austin: If WWE and Austin can’t agree, they should part ways for a while. Raw will need a trade to replace that star power. On King of the Ring: Booker, RVD, and Jericho do not need the bump but winning KOTR will do a lot for Holly or Lesnar. On other talent: working with Kurt Angle brings him up. He wants to work with HHH and Jericho. He loved doing the old school Hogan vignette. He knew he was hurt when he did the spear off the cage but was determined to do the pose down with Hogan. He had been practicing since he was little. Edge leaves the show. Recap of Benoit’s return on Raw in Edmonton. Benoit joins the show. On his release date: June 28th On Davey Boy Smith: “It plain sucks.” He has good memories of Davey. Sitting on the sidelines was the hardest part of his injury and he will not be passive and skip certain moves to take care of his neck. Benoit had a match the other day with Regal that went 30 min. and worked stiff and tight just like at the Pillman Memorial Show and his body felt good. People have seen everything in wrestling but telling a story in the ring does not get old. Anyone can learn a moonsault but storytelling in the ring is an art. Young workers must learn the basics before flipping around the ring. Benoit would like to do a 30 min. match with eight weeks build up to it and in the match not hit the ropes once. On understanding the business: never a day he doesn’t continue to learn. On King of the Ring winner: unpredictable. On Austin: “it sucks” but he doesn’t know the facts to the whole story because he was on the shelf. He can not compare Austin leaving WWE to him leaving WCW. He doesn’t know Steve well enough to call him but hopes he comes back. On his gut reaction with Steve leaving: It hurt his morale and he went through similar “crap” in WCW and doesn’t want to see it again. Benoit leaves show. Next week on Byte this they are trying to get Shawn Michaels. They plug Confidential with the Austin Story and Bobby Heenan. They show a clip of King of the Ring 2001: Shane vs. Angle Credit; 1wrestling
