TUF VI: Welterweights

Recommended Posts

I had round 1 pretty even, and round 2 was alllllll Ben. Great fight. Dan looked like a murder victim after the fight.

No one stands out this season. Mac for being a douche and Dan for "god god god" in the last ep. Otherwise I barely know names.

Matt Serra needs his own tv show. Dude is awesome.

Hughes was out of control this episode...first he beat the shit out of Dan mere days before his fight. Then he rubbed it in afterwards in the van... gotta make sure everyone knows you're Matt Fucking Hughes. Then he questions the Athletic Commission and asks where the judges go to school RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.

You're obviously looking at a man who stopped giving a fuck years ago.

Don't forget the whole, "Wah, my team is losing! I don't wanna play any more!" bit coming up next week.

I thought it was neat the Ben's knee was bleeding from smashing it into Dan's skull so many times.

Who else thought Dan was going to the bathroom to either A) Do drugs he had magically concealed somewhere or B) masturbate?

Youth N Asia, nobody stands out? Not even Jared and his high-pitched voice? Not saying the cat's gotta sound like Barry White, but it's just a little off-putting.

Yeah that bitch was just looking for attention.

And all the jesus shit makes me want to kill. "I've been praying and nothing has happened." I wonder why the fuck not.

I don't blame Matt Hughes at all for questioning the Athletic Commission and how they hire they judges, because everyone else questions them and wonders the same thing. I'm glad Matt Hughes had the balls to do it, most MMA fighters would be scared shitless.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the judging in that fight. Personally I had the fight 10-10, 10-9. I would score the first round 9-9 if possible, simply based on the fact that Ben pushed the round, landed more blows, and Dan did almost nothing at all, outside of tagging him with that solid shot to earn the split. Final round was Ben easy. Meltzer stated that he had it at 9-10, 10-8 which I could see as well.

The only fight that I took major issue with was the Bisping decision. Outside of that, while I have disagreed on fights (a few Tyson Griffin fights in particular), I can usually see where they were coming from with the decision.

Granted, I'm not a fan of the 10 point must system in MMA and this needs to be overhauled (as well as developing a consistent criteria). As it was, using a Pride-esque system in this fight would also have resulted in a win for Ben.

All in all, I thought the right guy won.

Second round was 10-8, Dan just ran the whole time and looked out of it. He wasn't doing anything to really fight or protect himself for the most part, it was his best just to keep standing.

Neither fighter impressed, Dan had a really strange style with a lot of awkward fakes, like he'd come in and fake a flying knee or some sort of shoulder BUTT really half-heartedly. Technique was awful.

Classy of Serra to come to their room and make nice with Dan afterwards. Hughes of course has no class, never has, never will.

Barrera has potential, I want to see more of him. But I hope he runs a lot less in the future.

I don't think he has much potential at all. He was getting tagged on the feet like crazy, showed no good instincts for gnp, didn't listen to his coach when he should have, and when things got tougher he made the habit of running away. His wrestling might be decent but we didn't see any of that, and we don't know about his grappling either. Basically I don't see any reason to be impressed with this guy other than the fact that he seems very athletic. But that's not enough until he proves something.

Man, Dan's wife seems fuckin' nuts, hot but nuts. I do feel bad for him getting that call then but maybe he's used to that shit or bottles it up well- he took it in stride.

Gotta' love Dana White talking about the judges, "I don't want to talk bad about our judges but... that was some terrible judging."

Now Hughes is an absolute dick but I don't blame him for calling out the judges, although I felt bad for the guy he was talking to.

A guy who's trained with Barrera says that he was still a pretty clueless spaz on the mat as of 6 months ago.

He's showed me a solid chin and looks like he can take a punch and a kick, and has power in both hands. His stand up techncially sucks, but if he can get under a good training camp and out of KY, I think he could become potentially become a threat.

Onto the last episode, a few points...

A) Does anyone else who is from Canada, finds it funny that Jared calls himself J-Rock? Considering the nickname is also shared by a white wigger rapper from Trailer Park Boys. I hope I ain't the only one who finds the irony of this.

B) Matt Hughes a few episodes ago said he wanted to see Jared make it to the semi's, but he wants to have him fight a clear winner to win the whole tournement. Jared is a tough fighter, I've seen him take a shit load of shots from Kikuchi, but matching him up with George was a very bad pick from Hughes. Hughes can bitch all he want, but I really question his match setting skills, aswell as his and his coaching staffs coaching skills. Working, and beating your fighters so hard that they become injured a day before they fight isn't the way to go.

C) Jared making fun of Serra's yelling while coaching as gold, I hope I wasn't the only one who laughed.

So what IS up with Team Hughes this season? Is Matt just taking the completely wrong coaching tact? Did he pick the worst fighters? Is Serra just outcoaching him this year?

EDIT: Oh, and Mazagatti shaved off the pornstache? BOO!

Matt Serra wearing his emotions on his sleeve during his team's fights is priceless. It adds another level of entertainment. Just to see these two guys fighting and constantly hearing Serra scream out tips and gameplans. It's awesome and hilarious at the same time.

"Joey, Don't you tap....Don't you tap Joey"

Serra is just a really good coach. He keeps his instructions simple, is very understandable and talks to guys like he is their best buddy.

"You're breathing the whole time buddy - you're breathing the whole time!"

He seems to be the only coach in TUF history that the fighters really listen to when they are in the ring. That probably also says something about the guys he picked.

Hughes is just a prick who talks down to people, he is either yelling angrily at them or saying nothing, and he chose boneheads.

His matchmaking is horrible man.

Jared is one of the better fighters on the show, and had he not fought George, chances are he'd likely make it to the finals. He made the same mistake in TUF 2 when he matched Josh Burkman against Melvin Guillard. And although Burkman won a tough hard desicion, he injured his arm in the process forcing him out of the show. He should've fed someone like Blake(as much as I like the guy) or Billy.

But Tommy Spears will likely beat War Machine if nothing goes wrong.

Christ, what a lopsided semis this is going to be. Just imagine when some of Serra's guys have to be cornered by Hughes.

At least Hughes can look forward to Mac Danzig winning... man, I think Mac Danzig would have made a better coach than Hughes.

J-Rock talking about Serra's annoying voice was one of the more hilarious "Pot/Kettle" moments of this season.

And this is likely going to fall just above TUF 4 as one of their worst seasons. Danzig steamrolling everybody in front of him should at least be mildly entertaining though.

Awesome first two minutes, but the rest of it was pretty brutal. Tommy showed some expert LnP for a lot of the second round.

Matt Serra was awesome this episode. Both in his exasperation as War Machine and also with his Matt Hughes impression.

And it doesn't even matter if War Machine won or lost. I'd set the over/under on his suicide at 2 years.

I don't think Speer was L&P'ing as much as he was simply tired, bleeding, and not very experienced. I remember thinknig to myself "For a mediocre guy, Speer is at least trying his hardest."

Also, on the competitiveness of the field:

my sex is artsy: "Do you think George & Mac could just split the rest of the house, 7 & 7, and take everyone else out? I'd say one a day is doable."

I was never sold on Danzig as well, but his experience and the competition he has fought defiently makes him a favorite to get to the finals. I think Ben Saunders could cause problems for anyone on the show, especially standing.

It is hilarious to watch Danzig group everyone else into a novice category and himself as this experienced veteran who just got put on this show because they needed star power or something. I can't even imagine the crap that would come out of his mouth if he were to lose to one of the other guys. I'm crossing my fingers he gets punked out before the finals.

Next episode looks to be good, with Mac trying to make up with Bowman, Serra wanting to pit Hughes' guys against each other right off the bat, and Hughes threatening to cry if Serra does just that.

Also: Wouldn't it be great (Though pretty much impossible) if Danzing loses to Hightower?
