Guest Report post Posted June 16, 2002 With all the controversy surrounding the Austin situation, people really haven't said too much about another really good piece on Confidential: the story of Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. I thought the interview with him was really well done and the footage they showed was absolutely classic. His banter back and forth with Gorilla was priceless. I first started watching the WWF when I was little and it was Gorilla and the Brain constantly at odds, making for some really great stuff. Seeing Monsoon at WM15 a few years back was heartbreaking. It was obvious that he wasn't in the best of health. He's in a better place now. Seeing Bobby Heenan tonight on Confidential was pretty jarring too. The Brain might be ill, but he's still hanging in there. He might never work for "the business" again, but the memories are still there. Bobby Heenan was a master at his craft. If nothing else, I at least want to say this: Here's to you, Brain. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted June 16, 2002 Although I haven't seen a lot of Bobby Heenan material, I know who he is, and I'd like to say thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't forget about him being on Confidential as well. I only bothered to watch his Confidential segment and Kurt Angle's "Before they Were Superstars" (but that's for another thread), and enjoyed his older footage (all of which I saw for the first time, with the exception of clips from the Gimmick Battle Royal), and was glad to see he was currently doing well, but at the same time was sad to see him talking with that inevitable rasp from the throat cancer. I hope his current upper hand over cancer lasts so that he is able to accomplish any future goals he has in his life inside and outside of sports entertainment. Guest Army Eye Report post Posted June 16, 2002 It killed me to see him like that and to hear something totally different from the Heenan voice we all know so well. But he is in such good spirits considering what he's been through. With that attitude, hell he'll outlive a lot of us. I thought the piece was really well done, as well as Mean Gene's comments on Bobby. Classy.
Guest Report post Posted June 16, 2002 Yeah. It's kinda scary to see his face thinned out like that, because, you know, that's how Gorilla looked at WM15. And of course it was weird to hear Heenan talk but not with with the familiar old Heenan voice. But he's still in good spirits, and that's good to see. He has the "I'm going to make it" attitude, and I think you need to have that to overcome these sorts of things. I hope he can overcome them and make a couple more appearances on WWE tv, but even if he doesn't, he's already done more than enough to entertain me as a wrestling fan. So much thanks to Bobby Heenan. And he was THE reason I watched last night. (I came for Heenan, I stuck around for Kurt Angle's "before they were stars" thing, and I kinda lingered around for the Austin stuff. But I committed myself to watching the minute I heard they were going to talk to Heenan). They need to sit the writers' asses down, along with Lawler, and have them listen to tapes of Bobby calling matches as a heel commentator, so they see how the deed is SUPPOSED to be done. Long Live The Brain. And thank you for entertaining me so thoroughly for so many years.
Guest Shaved Bear Report post Posted June 16, 2002 whenever I think of wrestling from my childhood I think of Bobby Heenan, because he was actually my favorite character, I would laugh at all of his antics, and I still do, I'm sure alot of you are lke that also, I wish him a speedy recovery
Guest JAxlMorrison Report post Posted June 16, 2002 Yeah it was sad and shocking to hear his voice like that, but it did warm my heart to see, on a show where it was supposed to be defined by the selfish actions of Austin, a man who 100% loves the business and gave anything and everything he could. Here's to a quick and speedy recovery for the Brain and hopefully we'll see him back in the Fed someday.
Guest DrEvil Report post Posted June 17, 2002 Here's to The Brain and a full recovery. It was sad to hear him without his trademark voice and looking like he did, but it was also uplifting to see someone with such an optimistic and cheering outlook. I hated Heenan when I was growing up, but now I see the utter brilliance of the character he played and his love and dedication to the sport. Truly one of the great professionals of all time. It's too bad the Austin situation hit the fan for this show. It would have been great if they were able to dedicate the entire hour to The Brain. Overall though, it was an excellent piece highlighting some great memories.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted June 18, 2002 The main reason I watched confidential this week was for the boby heenan story. it's too bad that it got overshadowed by the vince/jr/austin saga but you take what you can get right. the old footage they showed was wicked to see but it was difficult to listen to bobby knowing that he has such a brilliant mind and not the vocal skills to show it anymore. bobby was in very good spirits and it was really nice of the wwe to do that piece on bobby heenan. if only we could get him back on the air now... Guest BookerTman Report post Posted June 18, 2002 Damn, I long for the days of Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby the Brain Heenan announcing together. Those two were the best damn announcers' I've ever heard. It really sucks that Bobby has cancer and that his voice isn't the same. Gorilla and the Brain 4 ever!
