Smackdown Vs Raw 08

Recommended Posts

24/7 mode is buggy as hell.

So after Tommy Dreamer runs me over with a car, Coach calls me telling me how great it is that I'm working with ECW against Batista. That doesn't stop Dreamer from being upset that I didn't defend against Lashley (I did) or for Shane to be mad that I turned down the help (which I never got the choice). Then, having won the World Heavyweight Title as WWE Champion, I got the choice to choose my belt and show. So I chose to go to SmackDown so Ric Flair could wear his belt...and I'm staying on Raw anyway.

It's like the TNA writers handled the 24/7 mode in this damn thing.

Does thq even have people bother to test the game before it comes out? So far in 24/7, I have been feuding with Stephanie Mcmahon, and then I had the option of giving up the title to end the feud, and I choose to keep it and it says I chose to give up the title anyway. I also lost a triple threat match to triple h, and the cut scene shows Bobby Lashley as the winner, and Coach asked me if I wanted to switch to Raw, I chose yes, and I was still on Smackdown

I had a similar problem with Kenny continually telling me he was bailing on my tag matches because of his grandma. I never once picked him as a partner to begin with and that story arc was never actually resolved.

Say what you will about '06 and all its flaws, but it's still better than this piece of shit. The only two SmackDown games I got on the day they came out - SvR and SvR '08 - have been among the worst in the series. I can't even play '08 anymore due to how superior '06 is, and doing 2-player GM mode in '07 to try to cheat it and win GMotY to get unlimited EXP points is a bitch and a half. I may get Fire Pro Returns, but the one version of Fire Pro I've played (the first Fire Pro Advanced for the GBA) was underwhelming. Not too big a fan of the engine since strikes are basically made useless, and sometimes I like to be able to get close to an opponent in a game and just wail away. I still wish EA would make a game with Aki similar to Def Jam: FFNY that had nothing but fake wrestlers in a variety of rings and arenas. That could prove entertaining, considering the FFNY Aki engine was pretty deep, and could be played as either a straight-up fighting game or a straight-up wrestling game.

Ok, how the hell do you unlock guys? I can't select any of the bastards in a match to unlock them! And a 30-minute Ironman match doesn't even fucking exist, so that whole Shawn Michaels / Bret Hart thing seems to have gone out of the window. Have you got to do it all through 24/7 or something?

A few of them you can go to the hall of fame, select the wrestler and accept the challenge. I've unlocked Stone Cold and The Rock that way, I think you can get Bret Hart that way too.

Ahhhhhhh. I was thinking you first had to unlock Bret to then be able to unlock Stone Cold to then be able to unlock The Rock, and so on and so forth. The Hall of Fame never crossed my mind.

Cheers.

The 24/76 mode is really bug-ridden. Sometimes, a storyline will work just fine, and all your choices and selections will go through correctly. Then the next time that storyline comes up (because to reach legend status with a CAW, you're going to have to play through at least 2 years), it will go completely wonky. I remember the Stephie/Title forfeit just forced me to give up the title, but the second time that story came up, it didn't force a forfeit, and I actually kept the title...a line of code is screwed up somewhere in there.

Like I posted at DVDVR, fuck this game. Trying to wrap up Hall of Fame mode, it erased all the stables, moveset adjustments seem to reset themselves at random, and so many other problems. If I wanted crap, I'd at least pop in LOW: Showdown, that was funny in how bad it was. This is more sickening and I didn't even pay for this piece of shit.

I've noticed the move resests too. At first, I thought it was just a change when you were outside of your normal finishing zone (for instance, if you had a finisher that required the ropes or turnbuckle, and you were on the outside (without any secondary finisher that would fit). Then I noticed that my CAW's also changed at other points. Sloppy coding. Honestly, there were a few good points, but it seems that the SDvRAW games are depending too much on their newer features to carry the games without really making corrections to a lot of problems. And sometimes they inexplicably drop cool features or eliminate options for no good reason.

The good stuff about 2008 is a short list: the Struggle Submission system, the additional enviromental hotspots (included a cool chop spot in the corner), the fighting styles, the new finishers included in the game (Player's Boot, Kenny's leg drop, the Elijah Express), streamlined Ultimate Control

Moves (only one fireman's carry move, etc.), and the additional springboard moves.

The bad stuff is a much longer list, unfortunately: the limited number of moves (specifically submission holds) available (they dropped 80% of the submission moves since 2006 for no explicable reason, and they also lost a lot of the "indie" finishers and different versions of some of their moves [i specifically liked the old Scott Steiner reverse DDT]), quirky moveset shifts, funky bugs in the 24/7 mode, extremely annoying advancement system for CAWs (I hate the workout idea...I preferred the old points system), a roster that lacks a lot of the better wrestlers, the inability to play 30% of the roster in 24/7 mode, the loss of the the ability to pick your opponent up so that the face away from you (an essential for any decent back grapple finisher), and the continued inclusion of the absolutely useless Divas as playable characters (I wouldn't object to their inclusion if they could be used for anything in the basic workings of the game, but you can't play them in 24/7, there aren't enough of them to warrant an actual women's tournament match, and the ones they included are the mostly worthless ones [Melina, McCool, Maria - really only Mickie and Candice are remotely worthwhile]).

How do you go from an pretty darn good game in 2006 to this? I just don't understand.

Here's how: trying too hard to get fans jaded by the failures of past SvR games and the overall rise in popularity of Fire Pro State-side while also focusing too much on making it easy to play by non-hardcore wrestling gamers. I picked up No Mercy the other day for my nephew's b-day, we played a few matches, and it was amazing. Took me half a match to get used to the controls again after playing SvR'06 for so long, but once I did...beautiful. We did a Triple Threat match that lasted over 25 minutes, and not once was it boring. Exciting shit for the whole match.

So why can't SvR'08 be like this? They take out the amount of moves you can actually do (I liked the inclusion of the Ultimate Control grapples in '07, but get rid of 8 moves AND 2 UC grapples to make it easier to pull two off?), take out many moves you could choose, limit the moves you can do even moreso than '07 did by weight/fighting style (ie. a heavyweight can't do ANY martial arts moves in '07, and nobody over Light Heavy can be a submission specialist in '08, which makes NO sense), and make it so that the finishers don't really do much unless you're HHH or Batista.

Let's count the number of possible moves your character could perform in '06, '07, and now in '08.

'06:

25 front grapples, 9 standing strikes (including 3 combo strikes), 10 rear grapples, 10 corner grapples (front and rear), 2 running grapples, 3 opponent-rebound grapples, 6 ground grapples, 4 running strikes (including 2 corner-special ones), 1 rebound strike, 9 opp-down attacks (1 rebound, 2 running, 3 standing, 3 off-the-top), 4 opp-standing flying attacks (2 off-the-top, 1 running-to-outside, 1 by-the-ropes to outside), and 5 finishers (2 standard, 2 chair-assisted, 1 clean/dirty specific - either stealing opponent's or Super Dirty). That's 88 moves, and I think I left a couple out (I'm not counting HiaC or area-specific attacks).

'07:

9 standing strikes (including 3 combo strikes), 20 front grapples (including 4 quick grapples), 12 Ultimate Control grapples (4 available positions, and an average of 3 moves per position), 8 rear grapples, 8 corner grapples (front and rear), 2 running grapples, 2 opponent-rebound grapples, 6 ground grapples, 4 running strikes (including 2 corner-special ones), 1 rebound strikes, 9 opp-down attacks (1 rebound, 2 running, 3 standing, 3 off-the-top), 4 opp-standing flying attacks (2 off-the-top, 1 running-to-outside, 1 by-the-ropes to outside), and 5 finishers (2 standard, 2 chair-assisted, and 1 clean/dirty specific - either stealing opponent's or Super Dirty). That's also 88, but feels like less due to the Ultimate Control grapples not being of much use outside of two of them. Again, not including area-specific moves, though I will say that if I did, '07 would have the most available moves, seeing as how you could slam an opponent's head against the posts, steps, ring apron, etc.

'08:

8 standing strikes (including 3 combo strikes), 12 front grapples (including 4 quick grapples), 6 Ultimate Control grapples (2 available positions, and an average of 3 moves per position), 8 rear grapples, 8 corner grapples (front and rear), 2 running grapples, 2 opponent-rebound grapples, 6 ground grapples, 4 running strikes (including 2 corner-special ones), 1 rebound strike, 9 opp-down attacks (1 rebound, 2 running, 3 standing, 3 off-the-top), 4 opp-standing flying attacks (2 off-the-top, 1 running-to-outside, 1 by-the-ropes to outside), and 4 finishers (2 standard, 2 weapon-assisted). That's 74. Only 14 less, but those 14 helped flesh out a moveset enough to warrant being included.

Anyone else finding the whole Hardcore Rejuvenation thing doesn't work? My guy got bloodied by an opponent and did I get a full momentum meter? Did I jack.

Maybe it was a one off. It's worked since then.

I'm so pissed off with not being able to store a finisher anymore, btw.

sorry for the bump.. but got a quick Q:

So I checked SvR08 from work tonight and want to create some CAW's...

What's the easiest way to pick up cash for the kits? (Sim with Taker thru the season..?)

Ropes. Very centre of the apron each time. Need they be hit in succesion?

I had the same issue last time I tried to play the game. I was Carlito and did his thing off the center of all four sides of the ring with no unlock. I also for some reason can never get the powerbomb to the steal steps one to unlock either.

Is Eddy Guerrero unlockable, legitimage or not (ie: gameshark), on the PS3 version? I find it kind of odd that they'd only have him on the PSP version...

So, I'm using Edge in 24/7 mode. Will my Power 25 ranking ALWAYS be linked to Orton? Is there a way I can officially split up the team?

It just seems stupid to be ranked beside Orton when I'm fucking feuding with him.

I chose Edge for my 24/7 mode, also. My ranking was tied to Orton until I accepted a trade to Smackdown, and even then, it seems like I'm always ranked low despite losing only one (handicap) match.

Heh. That's kind of funny.

Does everyone else have the weird combo of both Elijah Burke and Marcus Cor Von as a tandem in the Power 25, along with CM Punk and Cor Von together at the same time?
