My F'n opinion.

 

I purchased this game the day it came out, which turned out to be one of the worst game purchases I've made in a while.

 

First off, WX8 has the same problems as Smackdown except for in this game, they factor more into the outcome of the match, for example if you are participating in a triple threat match and you do a small package on your opponent, your will most likely knock the third man down in the process, now to some this may seem "realistic" but to me it's very poor collision detection.

 

Second, the abcense of a story mode sucks, I'm sure other topics have touched on this but I felt that I just had to say something too.  The chamionship mode jumps from match to match but at least you fight tag teams that were actually teams when the game was made (Albert and Scott 2 Hot).

 

Third, controls, they make me sick.  Do you know what you have to do to even get up off the mat after being victim to one of the games horribly cheap computer opponents moves? Mash buttons, you'd think THQ could be a little bit more imaginative.  And if you want to run at someone for a clothesline or whatnot, you'll have to wait through at least a second and a half delay.  Which is the same for pretty much any action you want to perform.

 

Next up, the horridly unacceptable create-a-wrestler feature.  Maybe it's the poor selection of moves, the very limited variety of clothing, or the extreme UN-indepthness (word?) of the computer logic that makes this CAW almost as bad as Smackdown's.  The only thing  that the game allows you to make accurate is the body size of your wrestler.

 

Don't get me wrong, not everything in WX8 is dissapointing.  The graphics are fucking excellent compared to any game, almost reaching the ranks of the newest Resident Evil.  The wrestler entrances look the best they've ever looked and the music sounds great, as do every other sound in the game.  The moves look smooth and flashy, and every wrestler has their trade mark moves, and I have to say the Stone Cold Stunner looks exceptionally good, although my personal favorite is Tajiri's mist spit face kick combo.  Which brings me to another point, the ability to reverse finishers, I found this very refreshing in that just because you have your special, it doesn't mean the end of the match.

 

Okay, now that I'm done bitching about the game, feel free to bitch about my review, if that's what you want to call it.  If you think I'm being to harsh, it's because I am.  I'm just pissed off because I didn't rent the game before buying it.

Bitch? Can't. I agree with everything you said. Luckily I decided not to buy it the day it came out and instead rented it. I've played maybe 3 or 4 times and each time I've just gotten sick of playing. Any fatal four way match is just incredibly irritating to play.

 

I'll stick with LoW.

yup, i had the patience to wait and rent it. im glad i did. even multi-player dosent have much replay value. i found championship road very tedious. especially when you only have 5 front grapple moves to work with. i started off with lance storm, and for some strange reason, couldn't end any match with his finisher, the maple leaf/half crab, so i had to pin everyone with a fricken roll-up.

at least it's true to life.

 

will there ever be a game that tops 'no mercy'?  it can't be that hard, they don't need to reinvent the wheel.  all you have to do is copy all the gameplay aspects of NM & all the moves, eliminate that nasty bug that occasionally deletes all your saved work, and add new moves & characters.

Here is the problem I have with 'realistic' wrestling games like Smackdown and RAW and now (evidently) WM X8...

 

WRESTLING IS NOT REAL!

 

I mean that in the sense that not just *anything* can happen in the real wrestling ring, there are set ups and moves and wrestlers just dont dropkick another when they are doing a springboard.  God that is annoying.

 

A problem with style over substance?  In video games? in wwf? in wwf video games?  GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!
