best ending to a match

Recommended Posts

Guest godthedog

there's way too many great matches that are marred by bad endings: summerslam '01, wrestlemania '01, mindgames, etc.  i can't think of a match in recent memory that had a really great ending.  i think, to truly be a great match, the ending has to be on par with the rest of the match.  so a great match needs a great ending, & through protecting of characters & egos or whatever, having a great end to a match appears to be a lost art.

so let us pine away for the good old days: what's your favorite ending to a match?

personally, my favorite ever is hansen/kobashi, 93.  it just came out of nowhere, which is especially unusual for an all japan match.  in american wrestling, i love the end to the owen/bret cage match, with bret barely squeaking the win out.

Wargames, Bash '89.

Bret-Austin, Survivor Series '96.

Royal Rumble '92.

Undertaker-Michaels, Badd Blood.

Funk-Flair, Bash '89.

There you go.

Guest What?!

HBK vs Austin. I liked the whole "Sweet Chin Music! No! Stunner! No! Sweet Chin Music! No! Stunner!!!" ending.

And I know it was overbooked, but I liked the Rock vs Austin finish at X7. It was like "You want this belt, you've got to kill me for it" "Fine" *BAM* "Nope, still here" *BAM* "Uh uh" *Chair Hitting Barage* "...." 1...2...3!

I'll second Bret-Owen WMX. I may have just been a silly mark, but I totally didn't plan on Owen winning, much less the way he did (Victory roll out of nowhere). It was amazing.

Akira Hokuto vs. Shinobu Kandori 4/2/93

the punch of doom.

Misawa vs. Kawada 6/3/94

a battered Kawada tries to fight back, but there's nothing behind his kicks.  Misawa just beats him down, and pins him with at the time a very rare Tiger Driver 91.

Flair vs. Funk Bash 89

Flair misses a running knee, Funk locks on spinning toe hold, Flair reverses to figure four, Funk reverses to cradle, Flair reverses to cradle for the pin.

Bret v Owen was classic and the great booking of having Owen go over his brother finally a do all the celebrating only to have Bret win the World title later that night. It gave Owen a great angle. If I remember correctly.

The Austin v HBK stunner/superkick spot was good too. And Mero v Pillman in WCW was the shit even though I can just barely remember it. I think it was a inside cradle but it was some pinning combo. I was a mark back then for that one and Owen/Bret but we can't all be smarks at birth.

Sting Flair GAB 90

Sting reverses the setup of a figure four into a cradle.

Tully/Magnum starrcade85

Magnum breaks a chair sent in by baby doll and grabs a piece of it. They fight for control of it and finally magnum wins a jabs into the top of tully's head. Tully screams YES and sells it excellently. Great blade job there too.

One match that I really liked that I need to track down was the cage match for the tag titles between the Steiners and Money Inc. The finish was really cool, IIRC...one of the Steiners was already on the floor (Rick I think), and as IRS was trying to climb out, Rick got under him, and sort of held him on top of his shoulders as Scotty climbed down the cage and hit the floor before Dibiase.

Well, my memory is blurry, but it was something like that.

Yeah that was the summerslam spectacular '93. i think scott held IRS while rick climbed out of something like that. it was a really good match BTW.

The ending that completly caught me by surprise was Lance Storm vs. Jerry Lynn from Anarchy Rulez '99.  Storm pinned Lynn with a 3/4 nelson, which caught everyone off guard.  The ironic thing was, the day before I bought and viewed the tape, I had watched whatever Tough Enough ep. it was where they showed the idiot students how to do the 3/4 nelson.

Well, it's really not that ironic, just interesting to me.

 Hogan Vs Warrior at Wrestlemania in Toronto. Hogan misses the Legdrop and Warrior pins him cleanly which was a surprise at the time as most expected a dq, countout or interference!!!

"Akira Hokuto vs. Shinobu Kandori 4/2/93 the punch of doom."

I shall second that and then some, such amazing storytelling. I also second most of the ones mentioned here, but am adding Misawa vs. Kawada from the Championship Carnival 1995. Kawada had never pinned Misawa at this point and in the opening minutes of the match he manages to break Misawa's orbital bone in his face - Kawada has the best opportunity to beat Misawa yet because he is injured. All the way through the last 15 minutes Kawada tries to hit his dangerous backdrop but he can't quite do it. Finally he manages to pull the move off and Misawa looks dead, ripe to be pinned... but the time runs out.

The dangerous backdrop is set up as the move that can kill Misawa, Kawada looks equal in strength to Misawa but Misawa still looks as strong as ever. Brilliance in booking.

Owen pinning bret at WMX shocked EVERYBODY and was perfectly orchestrated, and still stands as great booking 8 years on, so i'll go for that. I also liked bret pinning austin with the sleeper reversal at survivor 96.

Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin at Wrestlemania XIII. A brilliant cap off to a brilliant match. Arguably one of the greatest matches ever (in my eyes). The immortal image of Bret locking in the Sharpshooter on a bloodied Steve Austin, as Austin practically pushes his way out of it (almost) to a deafening crowd. The people popped for Bret as the winner, but when Austin was walking back to the backstage area, all I could hear was "Austin, Austin, Austin, Austin".........

HBK/Austin vs. Owen/Bulldog. Everything just happened so quickly it grabeed my attention. I think it's the best Raw match in my mind. Austin goes for a Stunner on Bulldog, Owen breaks it up, HBk comes to take Owen out, superkicks Davey Boy unknowingly to the ref or Owen (in story), and Austin capitalizes by pinning the Bulldog for the 1-2-3 and the Tag Team Titles. A nice fast paced ending to an excellent tag team match.......

jarrett slapping the sharpshooter on test and test tapping like a bitch was awesome.

The austin/hart i quit match does have an awesome ending. Austin was bleeding like a stuck pig all over the place and that last time he raised up and yelled in pain is an image that i will never forget. Blood squirting from his temples and dripping all over him and the mat.Austin's finest momentIMO. Hell they made a shirt with the photo and his original video had that on the cover.

it was the moment that cemented steve austin as a true player in the wwf imo. it was a great image that would be played countless time on wwf tv.

cmon how about the wm 10 ladder match ending. Shawn climbs the ladder but Razor comes after him, they slug it out on top and Razor shoves shawn of the ladder, knocking him into the ropes, where he crotches himself (looked real painful), HBk struggles to free himself as Razor climbs, finally he frees himself but gets his arm caught in the process, Razor grabs the belts a split second before shawn lunges at the ladder.(Note I wrote that from memory so sorry If I was a little off on the specifics)

another fav of mine was recent. unforgiven 2001 Angle vs Austin. Bothe men are down, SC gets up and waits for KA, he signals for the stunner. kick wham-NOOOO reversed into anklelock, austn taps pittsburgh explodes. I just like that one cuz someone finally realized that when austin kicks you in the gut he's gonna stun you, so you should just grab his leg and angle did.

the best finish had to be spring stampede '99, Juvi vs Blitzkrieg, Juvy beat him with A TOP ROPE JUVI DRIVER it was brutal looking.

for markout value, I have to go with Foley winning his first WWF title from Rock, the crowd exploded when austin ran to the rign and hit rock with the chair, 1-2-3, foley did it! the place goes ballastic.

for some reason I also love the ending to Warrior-Savage WM7, Savage flies into the guardrail and hes out of it. UW brings him back in and hits a shouldertackle and knocks savage out of the ring, he does it two more times and drags him to the center of the ring, realzing that Savage is DEAD, UW simply places one foot on Savage for the 3. that was pretty unexpected considering savage had just kicked out of the warriror's finisher, even the crowd din't know it was over till the ref counted three.

man there sure are alot of good ones

Easily Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper WM 8. Piper catches Bret in the Sleeper out of nowhere, it's all over right? No! Bret climbs up the turnbuckles and proceeds to pin Piper 1-2-3 to win the IC Title IIRC.

The 37 chairshots of doom always tantalized me. The Rock just wont give up, but Austin almost kills him with vicious lacerations with a steel chair to the entire body of The Rock. A bloodied and psychotic Austin sacrifices a limp Rock for the most coveted title in wrestling.....

I thought that went too far in that match. The whole chairshots was getting old ck kicking out of everything was getting old quick. It was a good match however though.

I loved the ending of that match. Austin going nuts with a chair on the Rock while McMahon cheers him on.
