Me, because I hate it. That's on my desert island list of cds I'd throw rocks at.

Sublime - Sublime

Yeah, this is the one I'll get shit on for, but at least I'm not Darthtiki. To me, this has been one of those albums that was kind of popular during high school and it's just a bit embarrassing I still listen to it, but it reminds me of all the good times I had during my summers back then, exemplified by the final track "Doin Time". It's got a ton of catchy songs on it for me, and it's good background music for if/when I find the magical hallucinogens on this deserted island or making an awesome bbq.

FINALLY. FUCK. Who would shit on you for liking this and why?

I don't care if I get shit on, if people think my choices are too mainstream or what not then who gives a shit. However, VX I agree with Jorge it was a great pick.

For my next pick, I'm breaking my rule of one artist as well:

garbage-garbage.jpg

Garbage- Garbage 1995

This album was an impulse buy for me after seeing Shirley and the guys perform on the 1996 MTV Movie Awards, and since then I never regretted purchasing the album.

Hard%20Again%20Cover.jpg

Muddy Waters- Hard Again 1977

The album that kick started the blues revival from the late 70's into and through the 80's, it's also the album that revived Muddy's career. Some great hardcore blues, opening with the fantastic "Mannish Boy", features Johnny Winter and Bob Margolin on guitar, Pinetop Perkins on piano, James Cotton on harmonica and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums. Listening to this album it's easy to tell that all had a blast during recording, there is a very positive vibe around the whole thing, which makes it fun to listen to. A lot of studio chatter can be heard at the beginning and ends of each track, which is a nice little extra feature. Standouts include: the aformentioned "Mannish Boy", "Bus Driver", "I Want To Be Loved" and "I Can't Be Satisfied".

Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk at Cubist Castle

Post-modern? Hate that word. Psychedelic? Well, sure, it's an Elephant Six record, so invocations of the Beatles, Kinks, and Beach Boys are to be expected. But it's not just a case of a band simply tipping a cap at what precedes it for a couple of tracks or mindlessly applying the aesthetic of that time; Dusk at Cubist Castle fully digests the entire context of those albums and that time period, not just the idealism or the experimentation, but the artistry that makes the songs feel timeless, irrespective of the crappy four-track that recorded them.

Never even heard of them, or that album. I'll have to check that out.

Dr.%20Octagon.jpg

Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst

My favorite (as opposed to objectively best) rap album. Kool Keith at his wackiest. Hallucinogenic, sci-fi, porn rap, produced by the incomparable Dan the Automator. An instance of someone peeking into my head, seeing exactly the type of thing I would love, and then making it.

Fun fact one: I was actually going to pick this last round and the Monster Magnet record this round (they're actually pretty awesome to listen to back to back), but since I was skipping Slim, I thought "Well, he likes rap, I guess there's an outside chance he'd take it..." and then I saw gary floyd using the cover as his avatar, and I was like "Oh shit, that might remind somebody else of it." But here it is, safe and sound, so that worked out.

Fun fact two: As otherworldly as Keith is on this (and let's not forget the hilarious and bizarre skits, ["There's a horse in the hospital!"], the production on this is so amazing, that were it already selected, I might have actually tried to pick the instrumental:

octagon.jpg

I actually listen to both versions close to equally. There's a question of eligibility that I'm glad we didn't have to ask.

Milky, have you heard Sex Style? I like it almost as much as Dr. Octagon.

The guy's spotty as hell, though. The new Ultramagnetic MC's album was just awful.

My next pick is...

Hikaru Utada - Distance

UtadaHikaruDistance.jpg

While she's failed to catch on with American audiences, Hikki is a top-selling star worldwide, and a megastar in Japan. Distance is her second-most successful album, selling a mere five and a half million copies worldwide, and being certified 4x platinum by Japan's version of the RIAA. The first week it came out, it sold over three million copies. Four hit singles, that spent a combined 61 weeks at #1 in Japan, from November 1999 to February 2001.

Why do I love this album? Because I think her voice is sensational. I love her voice so much, that I bought this Japanese-only album despite not speaking a word of Japanese. Also, two of the #1 hit singles on this album were produced by the famed Flyte Time production duo of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, with another one produced by Darkchild, so the beats are tight, too.

That reminds me, while I normally don't like Cage, I do love The Smut Peddler's Porn Again. Damn underappreciated album.

With my next pick, I select.....

purplehaze.jpg

Cam'ron - Purple Haze

I love this whole CD. It had me waiting after getting pushed back a year for the release, but it was well worth it. Killa Cam and Addreneline are the two craziest tracks on the CD. Check it out if you haven't had a chance to.

Madvillain - Madvillainy

When MF Doom and Madlib get together, something intangible results that is of the same substance as the best of music. I know every inch of this album by heart, and yet there is something mysterious about it that keeps me listening. I think I'll be playing this one my entire life.

Well, I believe it's been about 7 years since the last pick, so everyone should be able to finish out their lists now.....

Let's get this thing rolling again. Coat picked on June 7, and say we ignore a day because of the server move. It should be BPS on the clock till the end of the day, with Spermy and Stevie able to make their choices at any time.

Time to dust quite a few off at once then:

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (1969)

"21st Century Schizoid Man" is probably the greatest song in the history of the world. As Agent previously alluded to, nothing else on the record quite measures up to it, but that's more indicative of the quality of the aforementioned song than anything else. I am also extremely fond of the acoustic tale of mythology that is the album's title track, and the completely enarmouringly experiment in how to make good music in a non conventional way "Moonchild". I love progressive rock, and this is one of my favourite albums from the genre.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (2007)

It's somewhat by chance that I enjoy this record as much as I do, since there really isn't any precedent for me to be a fan of electronic music in my record collection, David Bowie's Berlin triology and Kid A aside. As such, it would be somewhat difficult for me to offer an elaborate description of the record's various songs, so I shall just point out that "Someone Great", "All My Friends" and "Sound of Silver" are my favourite songs on here instead.

Radiohead - The Bends (1995)

On the whole I prefer Ok Computer, but that's merely because it is a more consistent and varied release, and I believe that Radiohead can successfully cover a much wider variety of styles musically. The Bends is all about individual songs, and oh boy, what songs! "Planet Telex", the title track, "Fake Plastic Trees", "Just" and "My Iron Lung" are all amongst the best tracks that Greenwood and co have ever layed down. The one element of this album that really appeals to me is that of the guitar tone throughout. Words cannot quite do it justice, but Ed and Johnny acheived just about the catchiest guitar sound that I have ever heard on this release.

Deltron - Deltron 3030 (2000)

This was the result of the collaboration between English rapper Del tha Funkee Homosapien and perennial hip-hop producer Dan the Automator. There's a really loose almost free-style like quality to Del's various raps that I am a big fan of, and the production is fantastic throughout.

Leonard Cohen - The Songs of Leonard Cohen. (1967)

Cohen's debut album is particularly significant as he was not a musician by nature, but rather a poet. As such, there is a real lyricsism to The Songs of Leonard Cohen that cannot be found in the work of many other popular musicians (I do have albums featuring Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan and Lou Reed - three exceptions to the rule - on this list, but I digress). The Bible would appear to have been a particular obssession of Cohen's at the time of this album's recording, as references to it appear in virtually every song. In the hands of a lesser lyricsist this could have come across as pretentious, but the songs throughout are well written enough that it doesn't even register as a problem. All of the songs on the album are stripped down and acoustic, which gives the lyrics space to breathe. When Cohen would flesh his songs out more musically on later releases, it would generally lead to inferior songs.

We're to the point now in my draft where I'm probably just going to take albums that I listened to over and over again when I got my first car. ...Actually Vitalogy already started that trend... But yeah...less thought more picking things that are probably already burned into my skull anyway

That does sound awfully familiar as well actually.

I don't think that it's fair to say that I know nothing about hip-hop. I have listened to a lot more of it since "Ask Milky" was still happening. A Tribe Called Quest and The Wu Tang Clan in particular.
