Guest BobbyBacklund Report post Posted February 16, 2002 Three reasons to get us started: 1) Their music is pretty jumbled with absolutely no flow( Listen to Prison Song, and you will see what I am talking about) 2) The songs that have flow are like nursery rhymes, meaning it is easy shit to play. Not much innovative thought goes into the creation. 3) The lead singer sounds like one hundred others, meaning he has no distinction. Guest The Vanilla Midget Report post Posted February 16, 2002 i like em, though i am not really into totally analysing the music i listen to like you seem to be. i just find their music really good, and it has some pretty nice balance. toxicity is a kickass song, and would have to be my fave atm. also, i saw their live show a few weeks ago, and that is what really got me into them, it was really good. lol, it looks like i am a mark for SOAD. As a fan of metal and hard rock, and one to analyze said genres, SOAD has many elements to separate them from other bands. 3 of them stand-out: *MELODY. Toxicity, as an album, is chock full of it. "Aerials" and "Deer Dance" have excellent melodic parts to them, something most hard rock songs these days lack. *POLITICAL VIEWS. "Prison Song" says it all. Not to mention "PLUCK" and others. The last MAINSTREAM band to have any political views was RATM, and they were practically communists (not saying its a bad thing, because communism, in theory, is great...just for the short-term). *GROWTH. Whereas most bands release 2 albums that will sound so alike it's not even funny (I'm looking at you, Slipknot, and you, Korn), SOAD released 2 albums that show definite growth. If you can't tell the difference between System Of A Down and Toxicity, then you shouldn't be listening to the style of music anyways, and should not comment on it. As for their simplicity...it's part of their appeal. Their songs ARE easy to play, but that's another reason I love them: they don't go out of their way to make a song complex. I'm guessing the boys in SOAD use the Glenn Danzig-riff method: If it sounds good, it's good. It doesn't need to be overly complex. It just needs to sound good. And there are literally millions of SOAD fans willing to debate that SOAD are just what they are: A GREAT HARD ROCK BAND. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

They have the aggressive sound coupled with the political viewpoints and lyrics, and are at the very least interesting. It did take me a little while to warm up to them, however. If you want speed metal, or nu metal that's challenging to listen to, get Slav Simanic, or James Satriani. Tool is a great band who are also worlds apart from most others in the music industry. I find their music to be underappreciated by the 'marks', if I may put in a wrestling term. I also find them to be boring and severly overrated especially by the majority of their fans who claim to be of higher intelligence. I think System has a unique sound, which is good in my opinion. Actually, because of this unique sound, I don't think you can make an accurate comparison between them and RATM. But they are one of the only bands that I can see being around in the next several years after every other "nu-metal" band is sucked into the black hole of crap along with the boy bands, talentless teenage hoes, crappy gimmick bands, and weak bitch rockers. They just make up wierd riffs and the guys yells and sings funky for a minute then the turn up the volume on the guitars and drown hm out. Just becausesomeone plays a riff that isprett retarded and different does't make them creative. "Cop Seuy", on the the other hand, is a great song. It is creative innovative, catchy and everything else the nu-metal bands aspire to be. But just like Static X they have a few really good songs, and the rest is unadulterated shit. i hae the song "Toxicity", by the way. Tool is the stupidest band in existence. Stupid becase they could make good music, if they tried. But they have several problems. 1. Maynard writes complex lyrics for te sake of being complex. Even worse, he sngs so his words are fairly incomprehensible. Most people are suprised when they find out "Schism" is a love song. And if it's not, the fact is merely backing up my former concern with being too complicated for the sake of sounding deep. 2.The songs go nowhere. Not many of Tool's songs have a climax. In fact, I don't think any other than a couple of the singles do. Their songs are all very cut and paste. Same formula. Each one is repetative bullshit with no real peak in the song. 3. The songs run for much longer than necsessary. They consistently make long, droning anthems that are both flat musically, and completely worthless for those who like what the lyrics are about. The new album is pretty sweet and I totally dig the way that they can change gears in a song (which, of course, could jar other people). The lyrics are great as well, from serious political commentaries to just total goofiness ("I brought my pogo stick / just to show her a trick"). I don't really they're comparable to Rage other than the political message, but they're still pretty solid, nonetheless. ...and I DEFINITELY like their stuff better than the new Tool album. I think AEnima's one of the best albums of the 90's, but Tool really kind of mellowed out with the new one - to me, Lateralus seemed to me like MJK was saying "everybody thinks we're the new religion in rock so we're going to be full of ourselves". There are some licks in songs on Lateralus, but I just don't think they were focused because they may have been a little too busy with buying into their own hype than paying attention to making good music. In this day of crappy teen pop and Brittney aguillaras, it is good to see a band that knows how to rock. I rather listen to System, then bands like Creed and such. The first song off of Toxicity, is "Prison", and that is about how our prisons are overflowed with drug offenders and how we need to change our policies, so I agree with them on some of their viewpoints. I also like the lead singer. He changes the way he sings throughout the album, and so I believe that he is one of the better lead singers out there. I definately think he is way better than Fred Dirst, and all the other Nu-Metal singers. I also like the guitarist, who has a style that fits the band very well. This band is about caos and such, and so their music fits the message they are trying to get across.
