The Wrestling Classic

7/11/85

@ Tampa, FL – SunDome

Commentators for the evening is a three man team of Vince McMahon, Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse “The Body” Ventura.

A video promo is aired focussing on the 15 entrants in tonights tournament. (15 as we still do not know who the mystery entrant is?)

America The Beautiful is played over the PA system as the crowd join in singing. After that is through Corporal Kirchner comes out waving the American flag as we get set for our first match in tonight’s tournament.

ROUND 1 : “Adorable” Adrian Adonis (with Jimmy Hart) pinned Corporal Kirchner after a DDT. (5.45) Kirchner’s first pinfall in the federation under the repackaged Corporal moniker. Another vicious showing by Adonis.

ROUND 1 : The Dynamite Kid (of The British Bulldogs) pinned Nikolai Volkoff (with “Classie” Freddie Blassie) after a dropkick from the top rope. (2.23) Dynamite was certainly that in the ring as Volkoff was completely over wellmed. It will be Adonis / Dynamite Kid in Round Two.

ROUND 1 : “Macho Man” Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) pinned Ivan Putski after rolling him up and putting his feet on the ropes. (4.33)

ROUND 1 : Davey Boy Smith (of The British Bulldogs) pinned Moondog Spot (the mystery entrant – woopie doo) after a running powerslam. (1.54) Both Bulldogs have gone through to the second round with impressive squashes. Smith will face Savage in the next round.

ROUND 1 : The Junkyard Dog pinned The Iron Shiek (with “Classie” Freddie Blassie) after a running shoulder tackle followed by a falling headbut. (3.11) The commentators glee in Blassie’s huge failings tonight.

ROUND 1 : Terry Funk pinned Blackjack Mulligan after a piledriver. (5.34) This was an entertaining brawl between two men that really have no time for one another. Funk will now face JYD in the second round.

ROUND 1 : In a rematch from two days ago Don “King” Muraco (with Mr Fuji) pinned Haku after again hitting him with the overhead piledriver. (5.32)

ROUND 1 : In somewhat of a surprise first round matchup Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana pinned Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat with an inside cradle. Both men shook hands before and after the match as a sign of respect. (11.43) The longest match in round one was also the best.

Interview in the back conducted by Lord Alfred Hayes. He is with The British Bulldogs. They put over their impressive victories in the first round and state that if they both win their next matches they will face each other in the semi finals. They wish each over good luck and shake hands.

Another interview this time with “Macho Man” Randy Savage, conducted by Mene Gene Okerlund. Savage says he feels good about tonight and can’t wait to go on and win some gold after he wins the tournament.

QUATERFINALS: The Dynamite Kid (of The British Bulldogs) pinned “Adorable” Adrian Adonis (with Jimmy Hart) after Adonis was hit with Jimmy Hart’s megaphone by accident. Dynamite is in the Semi Finals. (6.32) After the match and the fact that Dynamite is celebrating he is blindsided by The Hart Foundation who run in for the brawl, however down comes Dynamite’s partner Davey Boy Smith who helps to clear the ring of the heels.

QUATERFINALS: Dynamite wishes his partner luck as he leaves the ring for Smith’s upcoming match.

“Macho Man” Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) pinned Davey Boy Smith (of The British Bulldogs) after finishing things off with his signature move, the flying elbow drop from the top rope. (9.43) We have our first semi final in the shape of Randy Savage taking on The Dynamite Kid.

QUATERFINALS: Terry Funk pinned The Junkyard Dog after a knee to the back, a roll up and a handful of tights. (7.34) Big victory for Funk, although not the cleanest of ways to win, it still goes down in the record books as pinning one of the top stars of the WWF.

QUATERFINALS: The last quarterfinal match up was a classic between two men that know each other only too well, what with their feuds in the past over the Intercontinental Championship.

Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana submission over Don “King” Muraco (with Mr Fuji) with the figure four leg lock. (18.34) It will be Santana and Funk in the other semi final.

Interview in the back with Johnny Valliant and his men the tag team champions The Dream Team (Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and Brutus Beefcake). They say they have seen nothing tonight from The British Bulldogs that frighten them in the future.

SEMIFINAL: “Macho Man” Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) pinned The Dynamite Kid (of The British Bulldogs) after a series of pinning combinations between the two men ended with Savage getting the final one. A classic match – candidate for Match Of The Year as the commentators say. (17.32)

SEMIFINAL: Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana pinned Terry Funk after a flying forearm. (12.32) Funk’s first pinfall loss in the federation. Randy Savage runs down the aisle immediately after the match and begins attacking Santana as we head into our final and subsecent main event match.

FINAL: “Macho Man” Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) pinned Intercontinental Champion Tito Santana cleanly after an inside cradle. (24.32) The commentators put over each man’s stamina and will to win. Ventura states that if Savage has beaten Santana tonight there is no reason why he shouldn’t do it again when he chooses to cash in his number one contendership. This is a huge statement by The Macho Man and gold should be around his waist in some form in the not too distant future.
