Royal Rumble 1988

Recommended Posts

Guest vlad

I was watching Best of WWF Volume 15 last night. At the end of the tape there were previews for upcoming Coliseum Videos (Best of WWF Vol 16, Hulkamania 3 and Royal Rumble 1988).

My question is : Has anyone got the Coliseum Video version of that first Royal Rumble??

I have been searching for a copy everywhere. Most tape traders only have a copy ofr the TV broadcast from when it was shown on USA network.(and they are bad copies at that)

Thanks.

No, it wasn't the 89 Rumble, it was actually RR '88. On different tapes that it was advertised on, it was sometimes dubbed "Royal Rumble" or "Battle Royal." The tapes that it was advertised on were put out in early 1988. The clips that are shown are from the 88 Rumble, and include Danny Davis and the Ultimate Warrior being eliminated from the match. The plan was to release the event of CV, but it never panned out. The same goes for the never-released Junk Yard Dog tape from CV. If you ever come across the actual 1988 Royal Rumble, then it's a dub from the USA network, because it was never commercially released.

I don't ever recall there being a Royal Rumble '88 CV released. The first Royal Rumble that was put on Coliseum Video was '89.

This guy on ebay made excellent copies and put a homemade case on it that was swank. I got a copy for 20 bucks but it was worth it,

Dreamer, the event is good at best. There isn't anything terribly special about it, except fot the Rumble match and one match from the undercard (women's tag team title match). Rude/Steamboat is long and surprisingly boring, and the rest of the undercard is the same. I liked the Rumble match, since it was short, but action-filled. Bret puts on a good performance, as does several of the other participants. I'd rate it anywhere from ***1/2-****. I don't think it's worth $20 unless you are just dying to see it. I found a dub of it on Ebay last summer for about $7, so it's possible to find it at a good price if you look hard enough.

You know what i never understood about that 88 Rumble? Instead of ending the show with the Rumble match or even the Hogan-Andre contract signing, they ended it with The Young Stallions vs The Islanders in a 2 out of 3 fall snoozefest. Go figure.

it was to fill up extra time.

BTW, the 1988 Rumble was really not good. It was basically face vs. heel, a style not developed til i think 1991. Steamboat/Rude im shocked to say sucked, and the only really good match was a womens tag. go figure.

wrestlemania 4 was the best dude. i liked the year 1988 for wrestling but that was probably due to the fact that it was the year i first became a fan.

still wrestlemania 4 owns and it is still one of my most watch ppv's to this day.

You know, I'm going to have to go with Dreamer on this one. I don't care what all of you jaded wannabe smarks say, I fucking love Wrestlemania IV. It was the first Wrestlemania that I ever saw, and it was the second wrestling tape I ever saw. I have seen that damn show so many times, that I couldn't possibly hate it. I'm not going to say that it's a great wrestling show because it isn't. It's a show that I love for personal reasons, and I refuse to change my views just so they can conform to those of the average internet fan.

As for Royal Rumble '88 being terrible, I'll have to disagree with that as well. It wasn't great by any means but it was an enjoyable show. The undercard is very average, but nothing is completely terrible. The Rumble match is fun and enjoyable, IMO.

When you think about it, all of the WWF's big PPV's had mediocre first shows, with the exception of the Survivor Series. With time, the events got better for the most part, and I think it's not really surprising that the innagural events were just average, because that's the case for many things, not just wrestling shows.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think the reason why WM IV gets such a bad rap is becasue it was the folow up to what many claim to be the greatest WM of all time. I went to WM 1 and 2. When I left those shows, I thought they were the greatest shows I had ever been too. After viewing them numerous times times since then. you begin to realize it was the hype more so than the wrestling that made these shows exciting. At WM IV Vince was in his "The more the better" phase. Just the tourney and the matches with the tag title and IC titles on the line would have been PLENTY. Warroir vs. Hurcules, 6 man tag and the battle royal were just there to get all those other wrestlers on the show. Was it really necessary to showcase Ken Patera, Danny Davis, Sam Houston, ect.? If those matches didnt happen, you could have had wrestlers such as Bret Hart, Dynimite Kid, Bad News Brown, and Davey Boy Smith in the tourney instead of One Man Gang, and Jim Duggan (who i know was super over but come on). It could have been a 16 man event and the matches could have been longer and more excting instead of the quick and rushed matches that they put on. Elimintaing the dead weight matches would have made that possible. WM IV was just way too much. But like i said...thats my opinion.

Like I said, I'm not saying that the show was good in the wrestling sense, it's just a show that I love personally. The battle royal was just a reason to get a lot of guys on the show, and I think that there wasn't anything wrong with those intentions. The only match that didn't need to be on the show was Warrior/Hercules, simply because there wasn't that much behind the feud, and they would go on and have several matches in the months that would follow anyway. The 6-man tag was in a way neccessary because you had the whole Matilda dogknapping angle to work with. The IC title match was crap, but considering that it involved the second biggest title in the company, it wouldn't have made much sense to not have it defended on the biggest show of the year.

And Dreamer, my first wrestling video was Survivor Series '89, another hated event of the Internet community, that I still love because I've seen it so many times, despite it being nothing more than mediocre.

i love the battle royale too. i enjoyed seeing all those wrestlers because i hadn't before. plus it lead to the bret hart face turn.

daredevil, i was just curious because wm4 is one of the first wrestling tapes i ever seen too, along with summerslam 88, and surivivor series 87.

Basically the Royal Rumble in 1988 was shown live on the USA network as yet another shot in the late 80's counterprogramming war between the NWA and the WWF. The winner this time was the WWF with the RUmble pulling in an 8.0 if memory serves correctly and the NWA's PPV Debut, The Bunkhouse Stampede, taking a heavy blow to the ratings largely due to the free television WWF special. The reason that the somewhat anti-climactic tag team match ended the card is because the Stampede had already ended and the WWF no longer had any competition and thus no need to throw its strongest match on at the end and risk losing viewers throughout. A pretty dirty trick by the WWF that the NWA got even for when they pulled the exact same trick during Wrestlemania V by giving away Clash VI.

I'm pretty sure you mean Wrestlemania IV, Jay. Clash drew much better numbers than Mania did, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise since Clash was free and had a better card, while Mania cost a lost and featured a mediocre card.

Yeah, my bad, Clash 1 (Sting vs. Flair) ran against WMIV and dented the armor of the WWF's buyrate for that event, while Clash VI was thought of as better than WMV by many and hurt the buyrate a bit, but the Savage Hogan program was so intense that it drew a pretty damn good number. Damn, 3 Amaretto sours and the mental wrestling data bank goes to hell :)
