State of the Sports Folder

Recommended Posts

Hey gang. Figured I would open up the floor a bit here. We haven't done this in quite some time and with new ownership, it seems like a good idea.

-Do you guys feel there are too many all encompassing threads? Currently the last ten topics in the forum include two NBA threads, an MLB thread, an NHL thread, the NFL offseason thread, two fantasy baseball threads. A great deal of the discussion involves posting about games ongoing and little else. Should we change that somehow?

-Should we encourage more topics based on issues in sports?

-Are there any valid complaints about my actions here?

I have no problems with the sports folder. Now that I look at it - there are quite a bit of fantasy threads, but I never really took notice of that before and it doesn't bother me.

I don't think so. Big issues end up in their own threads, the little stuff gets sucked up in the big ones. It seems to be working. And I like the fantasy threads as they keep the general threads from getting cluttered with fantasy talk.

Umm, sure. Why not?

Other than your continued assaults on the ESPN thread, no.

I'm happy with the state of the folder. I still feel that Sports is the strongest folder on the board and that Al is a great moderator. Discussion does seem to be down right now, but I think it's just that lull in between football and the start of baseball season. Things should continue to pick up in the next few weeks.

I don't think that it's time to "save" the sports folder.

There's a veritable fuck-ton of fantasy threads, and we all know how I feel about fantasy sports, but I just don't read them, so whatevsies. People eat the shit up like starved coprophages, so what can I say. There's nothing that's really wrong here.

Oh wait, the ESPN thread. Remember how I said I wanted to do a "sports media analysis" thread that would supplant the ESPN thread to offer criticism of CBS, Fox, local stuff, and so forth? We should try that again as a replacement for "Skip Bayless said a stupid thing today!" so that we can keep railing on awful sports programming without totally focusing on ESPN.

We've tried it before, it usually dies. Maybe the best time is to wait for the next broadcast of Fox baseball.

Would it be better to try a Fantasy Sports subfolder and expand it a little like you did with the 24/7 Folder, al?

Probably not, since most of the discussion is honestly planning fantasy leagues. It helps to have that stuff visible to recruit players.

I think that's a habit many of us have from the RAW and Smackdown threads in the olden days. I would agree that it would be better to get away from play by play and more towards analysis, but not many posters are capable of really doing that. Nothing wrong with talking about a game at halftime or about something notable in a game while it's going on, though, but a prime example of how NOT to post in a sports thread would be Marvin during a Ravens game.

Since King and I are heavy Sports folder users and now mods, we hope to be around and open to any suggestions or comments anyone has for the folder.

I was considering the possibility of pinning offseason threads, since people have asked for that in the past and unless anyone is opposed to it, could be done. The only problem I could see with this is where anyone here has an issue with too many pinned threads- the reason they'd stay up there is so that they don't get too lost in the shuffle and we don't have a million threads popping up for offseason issues which belong there because some people are too lazy to look for the offseason topic. What would you guys think?

EDIT: Also, I'd be all for a Fantasy subfolder. A lot of us (read: Czech) are vehemently opposed to fantasy discussion in the regular Sports discussion, so there's no reason we can't do something like that. Funny enough though, I think he's also the one opposed to subfolders in general, so we'd have to see where that goes.

I'd like for there to be separate threads for trade (rumors, hirings and firings too) discussion.

I'll create an MLS thread if there's interest, because the English Football name is too constricting. Maybe I'll just change the name of it instead. And yes, more topics related to issues in sport.

I think that's it.

This is my favourite and most frequented folder. It's great the way it is - there really is something for everyone. Even Tennis got some discussion when Leena was allowed.

Just leave it alone. We don't even really need mods in this folder unless it's to curb the Marvin/Dama/Angelsault/NY&Boston fans.

I have no real problem with anything in this folder. I've thought a bit over the last couple of months that we could use some more threads than the standard game discussion threads, as that's something we really used to have a lot more of, but I can see that that's where we've evolved to, and everyone seems to be comfortable with it.

As someone who's been here for six (?!?) years, I can attest to the fact that the whole play-by-play thing used to be a LOT worse (relative to your viewpoint, I guess) than it is now. Take a look at the 2003 Stanley Cup playoffs thread, or the 2003 MLB playoffs thread. That's the reason those threads went 60+ pages. It's not nearly as bad now.

I like it so far.

Although I'm leery to even mention anything about OU period when football season starts.

I'm afraid of:

*Texas goes up by 2 TDs*

Me: Damn OU, can't play defense. Secondary better cover someone.

King: Alright! You were warned! In the gulag with you!

Ok I doubt that would actually happen. But it was a funny thought to me.

Ooo...when you throw people in the Gulag you need to post a picture of a southern cop with a huge mustache and huge sunglasses and his hat pulled low. And he's got this pissed off look on his face and at the bottom you can type "in the gulag with you boy."

A southern cop sending people to a Soviet labor camp is a tragically bad mixed metaphor, isn't it?

We already have a porn folder

We need a porn folder for our gay posters named the tool box. Wait do we have any gay posters anymore? Any at least confused about their sexuality?

I think the sports folder is pretty strong and I don’t think it really needs to be tweaked very much if at all. I’m not really sure what the deal is every day I log on and I see someone new has been modded. It’s starting to get ridiculous when the mods are out numbering the posters. At least the new mods will get experience before the Boston/NY fans start going insane.

I really hate subfolders and really don’t like seeing a ton of threads pinned. It just makes everything look cluttered.

I don’t think a subfolder for fantasy stuff is even remotely necessary. There are only two fantasy related threads on the first page of the sports folder. If you hate or can’t stand fantasy stuff, don’t click on the thread. I can’t stand Hockey or Golf so I just ignore all related threads. It does get ridiculous though when someone starts a new thread saying, “Hey, check out my team!” That crap just needs to get deleted instantly.

I like the weekly threads for baseball and basketball involving discussion on those specific games. I don’t think “play-by-play” is a major problem in any of the threads anymore. I haven’t seen anyone posting 20 times during the duration of one basketball game continuously talking about every little facet of that specific game. There’s always going to be people posting during games either complaining about Eric Gagne getting shelled or getting excited because Fukudome just blasted a home run off Gagne to tie things up in the ninth. You’re never going to get rid of that and I don’t see any problem with it. I do get tired of reading threads and constantly hearing play by play on how great Wily Mo Pena looks in HD.

I would be in favor of there being more threads involving major issues/scandals in sports. It seems like we’ve gotten away from that. An example would be, there was some heavy discussion in one of NBA threads on the age limit in pro basketball. That easily could have been its own thread and gotten more activity than it did buried inside of the weekly NBA thread. That could be a job for all these new mods to do.

I’d think an MLS thread would get some activity. It might lure some new posters. NASCAR, not so much.

Best folder.

My "Questions" thread was instantly massive and fun to participate in. Hard debate peppered with the absurd.

Never micromoderate. The internet is like fungus, and grows best under moist warm conditions, blooming into the eerily beautiful.
